Evaluation Eliese Marling
Forms and Conventions I chose to create a magazine called ‘Alibi.’ I chose this name because the audience I want to attract are teens/young adults that are seeking an ‘alibi.’ I wanted to make a music magazine genre that I have background knowledge about, so I decided to base my magazine on the genre of indie-pop. The masthead font suggests I am targeting a female genre, but inside the magazine on the contents page I contrast this with information on male artists. The masthead remains the same each issue to keep the audience consistent in buying the magazine. This makes it more easily recognizable. My double page spread was created to give a pop/indie/jazz feel. I used images to grab the audiences attention. The background is black, I decided to use this colour because it is such a powerful colour and attracts the audiences attention, I contrasted this with pink writing. My photos suggest the audience I am attracting are people who are interested in pop, indie or jazz music. I used all the appropriate codes and conventions.
Representation My media product represents teenagers/young adults as being adventurous and rebellious individuals. My media product aims to attract a person with a particular lifestyle. The genre of indie music is slowing coming back into fashion. Indie music is becoming more mainstream, and into the top 40 UK, so I have made my magazine a mixture of indie and pop music. My magazine is an attempt to represent this demographic. My target audience live the life of pleasure seeker, rebellious. In my photos I made sure my set was outside, this was to encourage young adults/teens to go outside more and explore nature.
Distribution As my magazine isn’t mainstream I will have to pitch my ideas to larger companies such as Zavvi, HMV, WHSmith etc… to get them to consider selling my magazine. Otherwise, I will approach smaller shops such as newsagents and clothes stores, maybe Urban Outfitters, Topshop or more popular clothes stores with an edgy feel. Small stores such as newsagents are very good at selling magazines because they aim to cater for a wide range of audience.
Audience My target audience for my magazine are young adults/teens who are interested in indie and popular music. I want to create a new place to find out about the new music that can download and listen to. Also, I’d like to attract people with a unique sense of fashion sense.
Attracting my Audience To attract my audience I used photos and fonts to catch their eye and keep them interested and wanting to read more. My photos attract an audience with a unique sense of style. The audience can look atthe photos and relate them to their lives.I wanted to attract men and women, so I used the contrast of that in my contents and photos in the contents e.g Freddie Ball. Also to contrasting race, I named black & white male artists.
Technology Development During the process of designing and making my magazine I had to learn the basics of some programmes such aPhotoshop. Before starting on my work I had to earn the basics of this programme as I has never used it before. I found usingPhotoshop very useful because it had very good editing tools for example manipulating and editing photos to a very high standard. When I did my preliminary magazine I was thinking about what I wanted to see in the magazine, but now I have learnt more about marketing and audience I have learnt to consider what the audience want to see in the magazine.
Preliminary vs Main Task Looking at both my preliminary task and final piece you can see a major difference between the two. I have learnt so much since doing my first task. I have developed in so many way. My photo’s look much more professional as I used a sony professional camera.
