EMCo 'Sweet Charity' Programme 2012
1.
2. Message from the Chairman
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am so proud, in my first year as Chairman of Exmouth Musical Theatre Company, to
welcome you to this year’s production of “Sweet Charity”.
Our enthusiastic and talented members have been working tirelessly since January to
bring you tonight’s performance and I’m sure you will agree that the hard work has
paid off.
I would like to thank our “all new” production team for their hard work throughout
rehearsals. Our director, Rob Walling has brought some new and innovative ideas to
the production and, Steve Grant (who has played in the orchestra for so many of our
previous shows) has embraced his first role as our musical director. I would also like
to thank Roxanne Henry for her invaluable help with the choreography.
So much effort goes into a production like this, both on and off stage, and I would like
to thank the EMCo committee for all their assistance and support during my first year
as Chairman.
My final thank you is to you, our audience. Thank you for showing your continued
support to EMCo in this difficult financial climate. Without this support we would not
be able to carry on producing quality musical theatre in Exmouth - as we have for the
past 102 years!
I sincerely hope that you enjoy the show and I look forward to seeing you in the
Autumn for our concert evenings of jazz and swing - and this time next year for the
fabulous Madness Musical - “Our House”.
Debbie
President’s Message
Sweet Charity is one of those shows that takes us by surprise. Few people seem to
remember the story, but nearly all the tunes are familiar. Indeed, there are so many
great songs in this show, made famous by some of the great artists of our time –
Shirley Bassey and Shirley Maclaine to name just two – it is almost guaranteed to be a
crowd pleaser.
EmCo has always been capable of performing the big show-stoppers with creative
skill and passion and I am certain this year will not disappoint. As President, it is so
pleasing to see how this group of talented performers manage to achieve such high
standards of performance year after year.
I’d like to use this opportunity to thank Val Clarke, who led the society over the
past 12 years and who dedicated herself to ensuring that we performed shows to
entertain and delight our audiences. Under the leadership of our new Chairman,
Debra Butler, I am sure that EmCo are well prepared to continue our heritage of top
quality performances.
I hope you enjoy this performance and I defy any of you to leave this theatre not still
tapping your feet to the Rhythm of Life!
David Whitehead

5. Sweet Charity is looking for a way out of
her dead end life, she is also looking for
love. She tries to climb the ladder but
finds she has no choice and cannot get a
better job because she has no education
or qualifications. This is true for millions
of kids living not in America but Africa.
Extreme poverty has robbed them of
their choices.
Exmouth recently welcomed Jeanne Kamara, our Country Manager in Sierra
Leone. She told us of the community of Gbap in which she works – one of the
poorest and remotest places on the planet where no other aid agency, or even
the government can get to. Christian Aid is training and equipping farmers to
grow themselves out of poverty by producing good quality crops and working
as a cooperative. Even so, children as young as 3 or 4 are still expected to work
in the fields or all day, scaring away the
birds, simply to survive. So Christian Aid is
also setting up Farm Field Schools under
trees in the bush so that the young ones
can receive a basic primary education for
a few hours a day whilst they are at work.
Christian Aid works with 507 such partner
organisations in 47 countries bringing
lasting change for the world’s poorest people. We work alongside communities
to find long-term solutions to crippling problems, provide urgent practical help
and tackle the root causes of poverty head on.
After this performance you are invited to make a donation to this excellent
work. How much? Well £5 will buy four hand tools for a farming family. £10 a
bushel of rice or groundnut seeds. Whatever you can give will help these kids
and their families out of poverty for good.
Thank you.

6. A word from the Director :
It is always a privilege to be asked to work with a talented cast and crew and so when I was approached
to direct this company, having seen some of their previous work, I jumped at the chance and it has not
disappointed. Coupled with a talented cast “Charity” is a show that has definitely won a place in my
heart.
With some of the most famous songs from the cannon of musical theatre (“If They Could See Me
Now”, “Big Spender”, “The Rhythm of Life” etc), it is both a daunting prospect and a privilege to be
able to bring them to life. Combine these iconic songs with a great script and you have the making of a
beautiful story. A story which has all the classic elements of great theatre. Like Charity, I would aspire
to find myself in the “Pompeii Club” however I suspect that I would actually be more at home in the
Fandango Ballroom. For three months I have laughed with Charity, danced with Charity and cried with
Charity and now I give her to you all.
As an aside, my favourite moments as a director are when the performers feel safe enough to “play “
with their own interpretations of their given characters, and in this process there have been moments
a plenty.
I would like to thank Debbie, the Chairman (actor, choreographer) for all of the support she has given
and the sheer amount of hard work she has done, Steve for a bringing the music together and I hope
you enjoy the band. Thanks also to Roxanne for a great Frug and Clare and Hugh on costume and set
for never saying no..... (Although all suggestions were gratefully received).
Thank you EMCo for taking me into your trust, allowing me to play, and for being instrumental in
creating a great show. Rob

Access to Performing Arts HE course.
Musical Director: Steve Grant
After spending 15 years as a musician in the orchestra pit, Steve is delighted to be
making his debut as the Musical Director for Sweet Charity with EMCO.
Steve gained his musical experience whilst serving in Her Majesty’s Royal Marines
Band Service, where he spent 25 happy years performing for Royalty and Dignitaries
all over the world. One of the highlights of his career was being given the position of
principal flautist on board Her Majesty’s Royal Yacht Britannia during a Royal Tour of
America and the Caribbean.
Since leaving the Royal Marines, Steve has continued his musical career as a specialist
woodwind teacher and teaches the flute, clarinet and saxophone in various schools
throughout East Devon. In 2006 Steve took up the role as conductor of the Devon
Youth Wind Orchestra, and in 2009 was delighted to be appointed as the Director
of Music for the Exmouth Town Concert Band. He has recently set up The Exmouth
Music Centre with his business partner Pete Manfield and is proud to be supporting
young musicians as they embark on their musical careers.
Steve would like to thank all the cast, but particularly Debbie (Charity & Chairman)
and Rob (Director) for their support during rehearsals.
Sit back and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic show, with many iconic songs,
which secretly he would love to be playing too!

12. The Show.......
SWEET CHARITY is a moving and funny look at the romantic misadventures of the gullible
Charity Hope Valentine. Charity is a dance hall hostess who always gives her heart and her
dreams to the wrong man.
We meet Charity when she is involved with a married man, whom she hopes will be her
fiancé just as soon as he divorces his wife. She meets him in the park where she sings of her
fondness of him but he does not reciprocate. Instead he throws her into the lake and steals
her purse which contains her life savings. After being saved by a number of disapproving
members of “Society” she finds her way back to her place of employment, the Fandango
Ballroom. Here Charity admits once again to her girlfriends that she let another man take
advantage of her. Receiving what she perceives as an empty promise from one of her
regulars (Marvin) she runs out of the club, vowing to never fall for another man and let him
get her hopes up for a happy ending.
Walking in the street Charity is caught in the middle of a fight between Vittorio Vidal, the
famous film star, and his mistress Ursula. Charity lets Vidal take her into the lavish Pompeii
Club for the evening where he proceeds to talk about Ursula for the whole night. In all of
the excitement, Charity faints and, at her suggestion, Vittorio brings her to his apartment
where she recovers. However before any funny business can take place, they are interrupted
by Ursula. Charity ends up hiding from Ursula in the closet all night where she witnesses the
real love life of the movie star she has watched so many times before.
Charity’s girlfriends at the dance hall are shocked that Charity did not receive more than
a hat and a cane from Vittorio. They all fantasise of a better life outside of the club and in
order to improve herself Charity tries going to classes at the local YMCA. She gets stuck in
an elevator with a panic ridden tax accountant named Oscar, and she sings “I’m The Bravest
Individual” to give him courage.
As an excuse to spend more time with Charity, Oscar takes her to the Rhythm of Life Church.
The Church evolved from a jazz music group, and its congregants include people down on
their luck. Unfortunately during the service the police arrive and everyone scarpers. Charity
and Oscar get to know each other more. For some unknown reason to Charity, Oscar thinks
she is a bank teller. She likes this idea, so decides not to clarify what she really does for a
living. Charity falls for Oscar, and is soon fantasizing about a nice life with him. She knows
she must tell Oscar what she really does for a living, but the right opportunity never seems
to come up. Then on the parachute ride we see the effect that Charity has had on Oscar
when he has a chance to comfort his Sweet Charity this time.
Charity decides that enough is enough and wants to be honest with Oscar but can’t look
him in the eye when she tells him the truth about her vocation. She is surprised however
to find out that he already knew the truth; he had followed her there one night and stayed
to watch. Oscar tells Charity that he can forget about her old job, and he proposes to her.
Charity celebrates that finally someone actually loves her.
13. Her boss and co-workers throw her a going away party, finally one of them will live
happily ever after! But Oscar breaks off the engagement; he tried but just can’t forget
that Charity was not “pure” and had been with other men
before they met. As they are walking through the park, Charity
tries desparately to save the relationship, Oscar trying to end
it, Oscar makes his point by throwing Charity into the lake. This
particular lake is bad luck for Charity. As she pulls herself out
of the water she muses on the advice that she gave Oscar in
the elevator, after all, she is the bravest individual she has ever
met, and at least Oscar didn’t take all her money

17. Obituary
It is with great sadness that EMCo remembers one of
our lost friends
Trevor Edwards joined the Exmouth Amateur Operatic Society in 1947 and
in 1948 the Society presented for their first post-war production, the Gilbert
and Sullivan opera ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ in which Trevor played the role
of Samuel.
Possessing a fine baritone voice and a natural stage presence he was equally
at home in drama and comedy and followed the family tradition of his
uncle, Ellis Edwards, of service to the Society.
He is remembered for the many principal roles he played and the executive
offices he held – Hon. Treasurer, Chairman, President and Life Member.
Trevor will be greatly missed by the Society – now Exmouth Musical Theatre
Company (E.M.C.O.) and by all the audiences who enjoyed his unforgettable
performances

21. NODA has a membership of 2500 amateur theatre groups and 3000 individual
enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and
pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country’s
leading professional theatres to tiny village halls.
Founded in 1899, NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional
councillor who sits on the national council (the ruling body of the Association),
supported by a network of regional representatives. These 190 volunteers are
the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre groups
themselves. NODA is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough.
There is a broad spectrum of ages involved in amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth
groups to adult companies which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical,
and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration. Each production created is a genuine
community event.
NODA aims:
• To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector
• To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance
• To provide leadership and advice to enable amateur theatre to tackle the challenges and opportunities of
the 21st century
Benefits of membership include access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, representation to
government, funding agencies, rightsholders and the media, and access to conferences, workshops and seminars
to help share information on best practice. NODA also holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries
available) offering training from professional tutors in drama performance, music directing, musical theatre,
stage management and other courses for performers, directors and technicians. It publishes regular regional
magazines and its quarterly NODA National News, and holds annual national and regional Programme and Poster
competitions, to encourage the highest standards in design. The NODA Library and Meeting Room provides
access to a comprehensive research archive of scores, libretti and reference books, as well as an attractive room
for meetings.
NODA’s trading arm, NODA Limited, acts as a mechanism for raising additional funds for the Association. Its
