OBJECTIVES
RECOGNIZE THREE LEARNING STYLES.
ADULT LEARNING PRINCIPLES
UPON COMPLETION OF THIS LECTURE, YOU WILL ABLE
TO UNDERSTAND:
Slide Title
• Make Effective Presentations
• Using Awesome Backgrounds
• Engage your Audience
• Capture Audience Attention
THREE TYPES OF LEARNING STYLES
AUDITORY LEARNING
KINESTHETIC LEARNINGVISUAL LEARNING
VISUAL LEARNERS
I. Instinctively follows directions
II. Can easily visualize objects
III. Has a great sense of balance and alignment
IV. Is an excellent organizer
visual learners have a preference for seeing the material in order to learn it.
Strengths of the visual learner:
 Studying notes on overhead
slides, whiteboards, Smartboards,
PowerPoint presentations, etc.
 Reading diagrams and handouts
 Following a distributed study
guide
 Reading from a textbook
 Studying alone
Best ways to learn:
VISUAL LEARNERS
AUDITORY LEARNERS
Strengths of the auditory learner:
With this learning style, students have to hear information
to truly absorb it.
 Understanding subtle changes in tone in a person's
voice
 Writing responses to lectures
 Oral exams
 Story-telling
 Solving difficult problems
 Working in groups
• Participating vocally in class
• Making recordings of class
notes and listening to them
• Reading assignments out
loud
• Studying with a partner or
group
Best ways to learn:
AUDITORY LEARNERS
KINESTHETIC LEARNERS
• Conducting experiments
• Acting out a play
• Studying while standing or
moving
• Doodling during lectures
• Studying while performing an
athletic activity like bouncing a
ball or shooting hoops
Kinesthetic learners tend to want to move while learning.
Best ways to learn
 Great hand-eye
coordination
 Quick reception
 Excellent experimenters
 Good at sports, art, and
drama
 High levels of energy

CHARACTERISTICS OF ADULT LEARNERS
Learn in their own ways01
Are not children02
Need organization03
Preconceptions and abilities04
Adults want to know why it’s
important (purpose) and how
they can use it
Adults like to participate in
decision making regarding
learning/training
CHARACTERISTICS OF ADULT LEARNERS
Adults are capable of lifelong
learning
Adults are goal oriented
Adults bring life experiences
and knowledge to learning
experiences
Adults are internally
motivated and self-directed
Adults are relevancy
oriented
Adults are practical
Adult learners like to be
respected
KNOWLES SIX PRINCIPLES OF ADULT LEARNING
2. Adults bring life experiences and knowledge to learning
experiences
 Educators encourage learners to connect past
experiences with current knowledge and activities.
 Educators must know how to relate the sum of the
learners experience to the current learning
experiences.
1. Adults are internally motivated and self-directed
 Adult learners make choices relevant to their
learning objectives.
 Students need to be given the freedom to assume
responsibility for their own choices.
4. Adults are relevancy oriented
 Adult learners benefit by relating the assigned tasks to their
own learning goals.
 If it is clear that the activities they are engaged into, directly
contribute to achieving their personal learning objectives, then
they will be inspired and motivated to engage in projects and
successfully complete them.
3. Adults are goal oriented
 Adult learners aim to acquire relevant and adequate
knowledge and for this reason intended learning outcomes
should be clearly identified.
 Once the learning goals have been identified,
educators must align the learning activities such that these
objectives are fulfilled within a certain period of time.
6. Adult learners like to be respected
Adult learners thrive in collaborative relationships with their
educators.
Learners become more productive when they’re considered
by their instructors as colleagues.
When their contributions are acknowledged, then they are
willing to put out their best work.
5. Adults are practical
It is very important for educators to identify appropriate ways
and convert theoretical learning to practical activities.
Work placement is a way for students to apply the
theoretical concepts learned inside the classroom into real-
life situations.
 Learning is assisted when appropriate ways of
implementing theoretical knowledge in real life situations is
made clear.
Thank You
