2. BRICOLAGE
Bricolage – mixing up and using different styles and genres
Nicki Minaj can be said to use bricolage due to having three main
sides to the artist; Barbie, business, lyrical focused artist. Each of
these three factors which make up Nicki enforce a side of her
personality from Barbie and fashion to her ideas to stand out and
become a successful and serious artist.
3. HYPER REALITY
Throughout many of her music videos Nicki has decided to use the
image of Barbie as inspiration for her own fashion style. It can be
argued that her image and likeness to Barbie is a tool for her to be
able to reach her target audience of young girls due to many having a
childhood of Barbie at some point.
Furthermore, linking to a consumer driven society due to the fact
Nicki is almost advertising the doll itself and the image attached as
pNoisciktiiv ed raensds efesm winhiante .can be argue as
challenging societies ideas of what young girls
should be watching as well as dismissing the
idea that it is okay to dress the way she does.
5. Barbie is seen to many people as a pop culture icon which contrasts
Nicki’s music genre greatly being hip hop/rap. This portrays she as
an artist is challenging the boundaries between genres and what is
acceptable.
The Barbie doll figure itself has been known and in the spot light for
not only young girls but society for 50 years and so Nicki using this
again as a tool to connect with a wider range of audiences and use a
well known icon to advertise and relate to. It can be argued that when
considering pastiche and Nicki it is merely a stylistic mask and cover
up for who she really is.
6. QUOTES RELATING TO NICKI
Nicki’s primary music genre is hip hop/rap; however when making music she has mixed her style
creating duets with pop and dance artists. Although she is considered vocally talented her character
itself can be argued whether it is positive, negative and in what ways. It can be suggested that it is not
surprising that her primary audience is of young girls due to her colour choices and focuses on
fashions rather than lyrics.
