Bi Directional Visitor Counter
1. Introduction
Many times we need to monitor the people visiting some place like shopping
mall. To provide solution for this i am going to implement a project called
“VisitorCounter withautomaticroom light control”. This project has a
“Visitor counter”. Basic conceptbehind this project is to measure and display
the number of persons entering in any room like seminar hall, conference room
etc. LCD displays number of personinside the room. We can use this project to
count and display the number of visitors entering inside any conference room or
seminar hall. This works in a two way. That means counter will be incremented
if person enters the room and will be decremented if a person leaves the room.
In addition, it will automatically controlroom lights .When the room is empty
the lights will be automatically turn off.
2. Motivation
A few days back, we organized a seminar in Pearl Continental, Conference
Hall. Main issues we faced were that firstly, few people were trapped inside hall
and security guards closed conference rooms after finishing seminar, because
they (security guards) were unaware of total number of people inside hall.
Moreover, we couldn’t analyse the feedback of people and number of people
attending the seminar as there wasn’t any registration process. Lastly, after
ending of seminar, electrical appliances such as Air coolers and fans were left
unattended, this caused electricity wastage.
All these problems gave me perspective that if we could somehow analyse the
number of people entering and leaving halls, these drawbacks could be avoided.
This promoted the idea of Bidirectional Visitor Counter in my mind through
which we can keep a check on number of people and allow all people to leave
any building before sealing it. We can also count number of people to analyse
the feedback of people on any event. And most importantly, in case of all
people leaving a premise, all electrical appliances will be turned off
automatically leading to saving of electricity.

3. Projectsummary
It will help us save electricity when no one is in the room .It is also helpful if
one wants to know the number of persons present in a room so as not to have
congestion. Moreover, it will work automatically so it reduces the human work.
4. Projectdetails
Architecture and environment
As far as hardware for project is concerned it will be implemented on
circuit board.
Apparatus used for this project will be:
R1, R3 – 760 Ohms
R2, R4 – 3K
R5 – 10K
C1 – 10uF, electrolyte
C2, C3 – 15pF
X1 – 12MHz crystal

U4 – 2-Digit 7 segment display
D1, D2 – IR LED
Q1, Q2 – IR Phototransistor
Implementationissuesand challenges
The most difficult and challenging issues in this project would be the interfacing
of LCD and dealing with sensors as I have no experience in dealing with them.
But I will try my level best in order to use them correctly and lead my project
towards success.
Deliverables
The project will basically sense the person entering or leaving the room by IR
sensors.
Breadboard : It will be used for implementing our circuit in hard form.
LCD: It will be used to show the number of persons.
IR Sensors:It will be used to sense the person entering or leaving the
room.
Quartz crystal: It will be used in oscillator circuit.
Ceramic capacitor: It will be used in oscillator circuit.
Electrolyte capacitor: It will be used in reset circuit.
Budget/ Cost
The total costof the project is Rs 2800 and a brief overview of various
budget consuming items is shown diagrammatically;

Timeline
Project is expected to be completed before 4th July, 2015 and then will be
presented before respective project examiner (Sir Usman) for questioning
session. In the given figure, project work distribution with respect to
semester’s weeks is shown:

5.Conclusion
In today’s world ,there is continuous need automatic appliance will be
increase in standard of living , there is a sense of urgency for developing
circuit that would ease the complexity of life . Also if someone wants to
know the number of persons present in a room so as not to have congestion,
the circuit prove to be helpful.
