8. Golden Apple Mission Statement
At Golden Apple, our mission is to inspire, develop and support
teacher excellence in Illinois, especially in schools of need.
Because the critical contributor to student achievement is the
quality of the teacher in the classroom, Golden Apple provides
exceptional teacher preparation for teachers at all stages of their
careers.
Through our innovative programs offering method, resource and
mentorship, we work to transform teachers and teaching,
enriching both student and teacher lives.
30. Golden Apple Scholars
In 1989, Golden Apple launched the
Scholars of Illinois program for pre-
service teachers and the Science
Workshop for veteran teachers.
32. Golden Apple Scholars
In 1993, Illinois Governor Jim Edgar
approved legislation expanding the
Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois
program statewide, supporting tuition
assistance for a larger group of
Scholars. The annual Scholar class
size grew from 15 to 60 Scholars.
46. CORE
In 1997, Golden Apple held the first
annual CORE (Center for Ongoing
Renewal and Enrichment)
professional development conference
for teaching Scholars.
49. GATE
In I998, Golden Apple introduced
alternative teacher certification to Illinois
through legislation. The Golden Apple
Teacher Education (GATE) program
helped more than 400 mid-career adults
become teachers before transitioning to a
consultancy to other alternative
certification programs in 2007.
51. Finalist Innovation in
Government
In 2001, Golden Apple’s annual
Scholar class size reached 100, and
the program was among 15
nationwide finalists for the Innovation
in Government award.
53. Inquiry Science Institute
In 2010, Golden Apple launched the
Inquiry Science Institute, a two-year
program to transform science
instruction in cohorts of CPS partner
schools.
63. Mission of the Academy
The Academy is a group of educators recognized as
outstanding classroom teachers who, through a
commitment to recognition, renewal, recruitment and
reform, advocate excellent and effective education
for all children.
The purpose of the Golden Apple Academy shall be
to create and sustain a community of educators who
work to transform teachers and teaching.
