Cables.

2. Hello everyone!!
In the following slides we are going to take a look
at one of the most important components of a
musical setup… the wires and cables.
Wires and cable can be considered the veins of the
musical setup which carry the sound in the form
of voltage variations
3. Cables or Wires…
• Cables are one of the most essential parts of any
musical performance or recording.
• Cables help carry the input signal from mic,
instrument or any other device and deliver the
output signal to the monitors/speakers/amp.
• They can be considered to be the transport
pathway of sound signals
• We take a look at some important cables in the
next slide…
5. • Now let us have a more detailed look into
each of the wires which we mostly come
across or use in recording or playing…
6. TS/Quarter inch/Instrument Cable
• TS – Tip , Sleeve
• 1/4inch or 6.35mm
jack
SLEEVE
TIP
• The tip carries the sound and the sleeve shields it
from disturbances.
7. • Used to take input from
guitars, bass guitars and
other electronic instruments
and deliver output.
• Likely to carry noise, so a
shorter TS cable is
advisable.
• Instead of using a long
quarter inch cable, using a
DI box is highly
recommended
8. ¼ inch TRS Cable
• These cables are similar to TS
cables but TRS is balanced as
opposed to TS.
• These cables are better shielded
against noise than TS cables.
9. • A TRS can be visualized as two TS cables
rolled into one, so it cuts off noise to a
greater extent.
• It is usually seen on studio headphones
TRS v/s TS
10. XLR CABLE
• It has two ends, the male and female end.
• The male end goes with the mic and the
female end to the output device or interface.
11. • This is a balanced cable and is highly
preferable as it cuts out noise to a huge
extent.
• Can be used over long distances without
thinking of introducing noise.
12. 1/8th inch or 3.5mm cable
• One of the most common jacks, is the
common audio jack on laptops, mobile
devices, etc.
• Similar to quarter inch cables in functionality .
Stereo Jack Mono Jack
13. RCA CABLES
• RCA – Radio Corporation America, named so
as they introduced these cables in 1940s.
• Found in many consumer appliances like 2.1
sound system, etc.
• Produces a buzz sound while
inserting the male pin into the
female pin which may damage
the euippment
14. • Yellow - Video signal
• Red and white – Audio Signal(L & R)
15. Some things to remember about cables…
• Never compromise on quality of wires, always go
for good quality stuff.
Good cables go a long way in providing a good sound.
• Using a long TS cable should be avoided as far as
possible.
Instead a DI box or a balanced cable(XLR,etc) should
be used for longer distances .
16. Hope all of you got the essence of this
slideshow… Thank you!!
