2. History
First Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621 among the
Pilgrims (from England) and American Indians (Native
Americans).
The Pilgrims travelled to America on the Mayflower and
settled at Plymouth Rock (Massachusetts).
The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to fish
and hunt.
They celebrated the year’s harvest with a 3 day feast
giving thanks for the food and end of a drought.
President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a
national holiday in 1863.
Thanksgiving is always the 4th Thursday of November
4. Turkey
Turkey is a bird native to North America.
Some believe there was turkey at the first Thanksgiving,
some believe they ate other types of birds, goose, fowl,
pigeon. There is no way to really know if turkey was
served.
Turkey is the main dish served on this day, along with
many different sides such as ham, corn, green beans,
stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet potato
casserole or yams, brussel sprouts, pumpkin pie, apple
pie.
Each year, the President of the United States pardons a
turkey, meaning he lets one live and not be killed for
Thanksgiving and it goes to live on a farm.
