Wellness & Homeostasis Biology 30S Unit 1 Wellness Poster Your assignment is to research the five areas that will give you the balance necessary to achieve a sense of wellness. Firstly, write down a good definition of each in your notebook. Secondly, take a piece of 11 x 17 piece of paper and make a poster that ooooozes wellness. The poster should include both pictures and text.

Wellness & Homeostasis Biology 30S Unit 1 What is wellness? Wellness is not the same as health. Health generally refers to only the physical well-being of an individual, whereas, wellness refers to the multidimensional interrelationship between the physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, interpersonal or social and environmental aspects of life.
Physical Wellness
Physical Wellness Physical Wellness involves maintaining the body at an optimal level of functioning. The physically well person exercises regularly, follows a healthful eating plan, utilizes health care resources, and practices appropriate self-care. A basic aspect of this dimension is avoiding the dangers of tobacco, alcohol, and substance abuse. Physical Wellness includes maintaining a high level of physical energy.
Social Wellness
Social Wellness Social Wellness involves balancing the needs of self within the needs of others. Development in this dimension includes respecting the rights of others and contributing to the common welfare of the community. Socially healthy people experience other benefits of being alone, being with others, and being in a crowd. They also strive for harmony in relationships but recognize that disagreements are inevitable and need not destroy friendships.
Emotional Wellness
Emotional Wellness Emotional Wellness emphasizes the awareness and acceptance of personal feelings. It involves learning to express them appropriately while being sensitive and responsive to the emotions of others. Important components are having the skills to deal effectively with stress, create, psychological energy, and be emotionally self-sufficient when necessary. Emotional Wellness includes the capacity to put the past in perspective and plan for the future, while still living in the present.
Intellectual Wellness
Intellectual Wellness contains the elements of curiosity and creativity. It involves thinking logically, distinguishing facts from opinions, making appropriate decisions without complete information, and recognizing that answers often generate more questions. There is an excitement associated with learning and becoming a self-directed learner. Inherent in this dimension is the ability to speak and write effectively. Intellectual Wellness embraces all the knowledge that enhances quality of life. Intellectual Wellness
Spiritual Wellness
Spiritual Wellness Spiritual wellness entails exploring the meaning and purpose of human existence and developing an appreciation for the profoundness of life and natural forces that exist in the universe. It involves asking questions about life, observing the scenery and enjoying the journey of your life. Spiritual wellness is different than religion or having a religious affiliation. Spiritual wellness encourages you to learn from your experiences and to integrate your beliefs with the beliefs of others. Spiritual wellness fosters tolerance of others and their beliefs and encourages consistency in our values and being true to oneself.

  1. The same thing happens when our lives are out of balance – it becomes difficult to carry out our normal tasks. Life balance is an individual choice, determined by setting priorities as to what is important to you. As we mature, some people take on more and more activities to balance, while others may not have enough different activities to provide balance.
