This achievement standard involves investigating ideas and methods relating to art and art works
in the context of the drawing study in painting. It also involves using established drawing
processes, procedures, materials and techniques appropriate to ideas and methods studied, and
using drawing to generate, analyse and clarify ideas.
How?
Collect, research, Use drawing to think on Process all your collected information
assemble & collate paper. Use drawing as a & recombine & transform to make
information including process where ideas are original work

Respond to, analyse & make decisions about what you have done
Evidence of the ability to generate, analyse and clarify ideas will be
identified in a range of work within the selected field.
This may involve different processes, procedures, materials &
techniques, all of which can be understood as drawing. In effect, being
able to make paintings is dependent upon recognizing & using drawing
as a thinking & working process
2. Level 3 Visual Arts Painting
Tasks FOR 3.2
The evidence MUST be critically edited, ordered & related to show the
nature & order of steps taken.
TASK 1
The objective of this task is to investigate the subject matter selected as the
starting point & to identify the content & pictorial elements
Referencing the subject
Produce one drawing to establish the subject for this body of work.
You may work directly from the subject or from photographs.
Consider pictorial elements such as viewpoint, perspective & tonal values.
Consider what aspects of the subject you want to investigate in the works.
Refer to the aspects of recent & established practice you have already
researched to inform the direction & decisions you make in this drawing.
Select materials methods & processes appropriate to the subject & issues
addressed & the painting process you will use.
TASK 2
The objective of this task is to’ investigate the subject matter & generate a
range of ideas’ with reference to the artists studied & the pictorial issues
identified in previous work
‘Developing & investigating ideas in the context of a drawing study’
Produce three small drawings or paint studies that present a series of
ideas in a continuum drawn from the subject matter selected & with reference
to your research into established practice.
Size of work to be A5 approximately
Respond to each work as you proceed & evaluate & refine your ideas as they
develop. Your drawings should also demonstrate consideration for the
selected painting processes & the pictorial issues implicit in the processes to
be used
‘Use an analytical and evaluative approach to investigate a particular form of
artwork to identify specific ideas and methods to develop a coherent drawing
study’
Show your thinking & working process
3. TASK 3
‘Use established drawing processes, procedures, materials & techniques
appropriate to ideas & methods studied’
Produce two paintings to demonstrate your ability to use the selected paint
process, materials, techniques & methods of application appropriately.
In these paintings you should continue the exploration & clarification of ideas
however the specific focus should be on the method & use of media in a
drawing context.
Refer to recent & established practice & experiment with the materials &
supports available.
The objective of this sequence is to identify a selected drawing approach &
the materials, methods, techniques & processes appropriate to the selected
subject & field of study with reference to established practice
TASKS
(a) painting 1 (1 hour)1 x A4
Choose your favourite A5 work from Task 2: Identify the area of this work
you feel is most successful.
Make a note of the materials and techniques used in this work. You will
photocopy this enlarging that area to A4. Work over this in the materials and
techniques used in your most successful A5.
(b) painting 1 (1 hour) 1 x A4
Repeat this process for your next work, this time copying the work you have
just completed. Identify key terms, shape, texture, colour, background,
foreground. You must copy this work and cut the copy up, rearranging either
by cutting shapes out and placing on a new painted ground or re-assembling
and pasting down onto a new A4 sheet of paper. Work over this with the
media and techniques used in the previous work.
You now have 1 hour to analyse these works in a small series of sketches in
preparation for 3 final works which you will complete in class time.
(c) (3 small sketches in preparation for work to be complete for Task 4 - 20
minutes each work)1 X A3
Divide your A3 page into three, to generate the 3 small sketches. You must
use charcoal to sketch the first work, aquarelle pencil for the next work and
Indian ink for the 3rd. You have approximately 20 minutes for each work.
4. TASK 4
The objective of this task is to demonstrate a ‘systematic & purposeful
approach to generating, analysing & clarifying ideas based on recent &
established practice’
Use drawing to generate, analyse & clarify ideas.
Conclude the series with three works with the specific intention of
clarifying the ideas, pictorial elements, methods, materials, techniques
& processes in conjunction with the artist model research.
This series should continue from the previous investigations & demonstrate
the ability to evaluate, select, refine & re-present ideas in a drawing context.
The final work in the series should represent a conclusion to the body of work
in all aspects.
Size may vary but no work is to be larger than A4 in cumulative dimensions
(approximately)

Explanatory Notes
• Processes refers to the use of particular techniques with tools,
technologies and materials.
• Procedures refers to the order and nature of steps taken in getting from
the beginning to the end of the problem.
• Synthesise refers to the ability to bring together ideas and methods
from different sources, to integrate them in the development of the
student’s own work.
• Evidence of the ability to generate, analyse and clarify ideas will be
identified in a range of work within the selected field.
• Clarifying ideas requires students to specify parameters for
investigation, it does not imply that these ideas will be resolved.
6. – This may involve different processes, procedures, materials and
techniques, all of which can be understood as drawing. This
practice is dependent upon recognising and using drawing as a
thinking and working process.
– Drawing is an ongoing decision-making process that enables a
continuum to be established and maintained. Aspects of
drawing are also identifiable in finished work.
– Painting drawing may include drawing notes, sketches,
monochromatic and colour studies, collage, photographs, digital
processes, developmental and finished works.
– Painting drawing should be used as central means of practical
investigation. Where it is appropriate, students may include
processes, procedures, methods and techniques from other art
fields.
• Systematically means to reflect critically on each step in the
development of work. Information generated from this reflection will be
used to inform and clarify ideas.
• The drawing study should include work belonging to the cultural milieu
and interests of the student and involve the study of work and ideas
from recent and established practice. Where relevant, this evidence
could also take account of the work of contemporary New Zealand
artists.
• Digital processes may be used as part of the drawing process.
Teachers and candidates may choose to combine traditional practice
with other processes such as digital image-making. Successful Visual
Arts teaching programmes will ensure that candidates maintain control
of the processes, both digital and traditional, used in the production of
their work.
• The evidence may be based on an idea, subject matter, problem or
situation, and must be related to established practice.
• Note: Learning from established practice is the use of artists as models
of practice; investigating the context within which art works are made to
inform the students own work. The evidence will be critically edited,
ordered and related to show the nature and order of steps taken.
