AI-2008 is the Twenty-eighth SGAI International Conference on
Innovative Techniques and Applications of Artificial Intelligence.
The scope of the conference comprises the whole range of AI
technologies and application areas. AI-2008 reviews recent technical
advances in AI technologies and shows how these advances have

- Papers will be published in book form by Spinger.
- The Technical Stream presents the best of recent developments in
AI,

- The Application Stream is the largest annual showcase in Europe of

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Contributions are invited in the form of papers of up to fourteen A4
pages presenting original work in AI. Contributions may be submitted
to either of two streams for oral presentation, or a parallel poster
session (six pages maximum).
Technical Stream
Areas of interest include (but are not restricted to): knowledge

6. engineering; semantic web; constraint satisfaction; intelligent
agents; machine learning; model based reasoning; verification and
validation of AI systems; natural language understanding;
speech-enabled systems; case based reasoning; neural networks;
genetic algorithms; data mining and knowledge discovery in
databases;
knowledge representation, inference and reasoning; robotics and
pervasive computing; qualitative and temporal reasoning; knowledge
management; AI languages and environments; robotics and pervasive
computing.
Application Stream
Case studies are welcomed describing the application of AI to
real-world problems. Papers in recent years have covered all
application domains, including commerce, manufacturing and
government, and every major AI technique. In addition to case studies
and specific applications of AI, we would welcome papers that discuss
issues such as managing the transfer from research to production of
AI-based products. Papers are selected to highlight critical areas of
success (and failure) and to present the benefits and lessons of value
to other developers. Submitted papers should make these points
clear.
Guidance notes for Application Stream authors are available from the
website.
Poster Session
The Poster Session is intended for the presentation of work which
meets the high standards of AI-2008, but which is more topical and
preliminary than the work presented in the main two streams. It is an
excellent forum for disseminating new developments and latest work
in
progress, especially suited to MSc and PhD students. Poster papers
will be printed as short papers (maximum 6 pages) in the proceedings
volumes. Papers submitted to the Technical and Application streams
will automatically be considered as posters if they fall short of the
standard for oral presentation in full form.
Publication of Papers
Papers accepted for presentation at the conference will be published
in book form by Springer.
- The books will be prepared from camera-ready copy supplied by the
authors of accepted papers.
- Formatting specifications for the proceedings have been provided by
the publisher and are available from the conference website.
- Authors will retain copyright in all papers published in the two
volumes of proceedings.
- The best six refereed papers in each stream will be reprinted as a
special issue of the international journal Knowledge Based Systems.
Submission of Papers

7. Papers must be prepared in either Microsoft Word or Latex. Initial
versions of papers should be submitted in PDF format only and
uploaded to the conference website by SUNDAY JUNE 15th 2008 at
the
latest. There are revised Word macro and Latex style files compared
with previous years.
- At least one author of each accepted paper must register for and
attend the conference to present it in person, for the paper to be
published.
- Presenting authors will be asked to register for the conference at
the discounted speakers' rate when they return the final camera-ready
printed versions of their papers.
Tutorials & workshops
The Conference Committee invites proposals for tutorials and
workshops
to be presented on the first day of the conference. These should be
directed in the first instance to the Tutorial/Workshop Organiser.
Prizes
There are sponsored prizes (a trophy plus 500 pounds) for the best
paper submitted in each stream and a trophy plus a cash prize for the
best poster, awarded on the basis of delegate voting.
Machine Intelligence Competition
A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a 1,000 pounds cash
prize
will be awarded to the winner of the annual machine intelligence
competition. This prize will be awarded to the working system that is
considered to be the most significant step forward towards Machine
Intelligence on display at the competition.

Tuesday, May 6. Prospective authors are required to register at the AIIDE-08

Conf=AIIDE. The software will assign a password, which will enable authors
to log on to submit an abstract and paper.
AIIDE-08 invites researchers and practitioners to share insights and cutting-
edge results from a wide range of topics and encourages the demonstration
of a) research systems in the context of existing commercial games, b) new
games authored by researchers, c) contributions demonstrating the adoption
and/or extension of AI research results published games, and d) completely
new forms of interactive digital entertainment made possible by AI research.
An electronic submission of a 2-page abstract and demonstration materials is
required. Demonstration materials can take the form of a recorded
demonstration session, an executable version of the demonstration with
written instructions, or a detailed description of the demonstration heavily
illustrated with screenshots. Please note that these materials are for review
only; it is hoped that all demonstrations will be conducted live at AIIDE-08.

The School of Biology, Computation, and Information (BCI),
reaching this year its fifth edition, aims at bringing
together Teachers and Students in Biology, Mathematics,
and Computer Science. The main goal of the School is to
give an updated overview of interdisciplinary techniques
and problems cross-bordering the three fields.
This year's edition will be centered on (Re)Sequencing
and Annotating Genomes, touching a field in which new
technologies and old problems meet in a context calling
for an even higher level of interaction among the three
different disciplines at the core of the School.
The three distinguished speakers for this year's edition
are Michele Morgante (Biology), Alberto Apostolico
(Computer Science), and Laxmi Parida (Mathematics) and
the school will take place during the second week of
September (September 8-12, 2008).
During the school, on Tuesday September 9th, a one-day
workshop will take place. It will be titled "New Sequencing
Technologies". Excellence lecturers and technological
representatives will be invited and the participants to the
School may submit an abstract leading to a twenty-minute

14. The Seventh British Computer Society Machine Intelligence
Competition
Wednesday December 10th 2008 at Peterhouse College,
Cambridge, UK, during the annual SGAI conference AI-2008
Closing Date for Entries: October 1st 2008
This is the seventh in an annual series of competitions for live
demonstrations of 'Progress Towards Machine Intelligence'
organized by the British Computer Society Specialist Group on
Artificial Intelligence (SGAI) in association with AKRI Ltd.
The demonstration can be of either software (e.g. a question-
answering system or a speech recognition system) or hardware
(e.g. a mobile robot).
This competition will put on show real systems demonstrated
live. It is hoped that the competition and the competitors, over
several years, will provide a new interest and visible
improvements in the development of machine intelligence.
Entry Fee: There is no entry fee and conference registration is
not required.
Prize: A permanent trophy awarded for one year plus a £1,000
cash prize.
Format: The prize will be awarded on the basis of a 10-15
minute live demonstration (not a paper or a technical
description). The prize will be awarded to the demonstration
that in the opinion of the judges best demonstrates 'progress
towards an intelligent machine'.
Judges: All registered delegates at the conference will be
eligible to vote in a secret ballot.
Eligibility: The competition is open to all. A maximum of 5
entries will be presented. To control numbers, these will be
selected by the organizers on the basis of information provided
by the entrants.

We are editing a series of volumes on 'Foundations on Computational
Intelligence' which will be published by the Springer Series in Studies in
Computational Intelligence.
Until today, we have received an overwhelming response (over 100
proposals so far!) to the first call for chapters.

17. Book Objectives & Mission:
Nature has always been a source of inspiration. In recent years, new concepts,
techniques and computational applications stimulated by nature are being continually
proposed and exploited to solve a wide range of optimisation problems in diverse
fields. Various kinds of nature-inspired algorithms have been designed and applied,
and many of them are producing high quality solutions to a variety of real-world
applications and optimisation problems, including scheduling, manufacturing,
logistics, space allocation, stock cutting, anomaly detection, engineering design,
software testing, bioinformatics and data mining, etc. The success of these algorithms
has led to competitive advantages and cost savings not only to the industry but also
the society at large.
The use of nature-inspired algorithms stands out to be promising due to the fact that
many real-world problems have become increasingly complex. The size and
complexity of the optimisation problems nowadays require the development of
methods and solutions whose efficiency is measured by their ability to find acceptable
results within a reasonable amount of time. Despite there is no guarantee of finding
the optimal solution, approaches based on the influence of biology and life sciences
such as evolutionary algorithms, neural networks, ant systems, swarm intelligence,
artificial immune systems, and many others have been shown to be highly practical
and provided state-of-the-art solutions to various optimisation problems.
The aim of this book is to provide a central source of reference by collecting and
disseminating the progressive body of knowledge on nature-inspired algorithms and
their applications. The main focus will be the implementation of novel nature-inspired
solutions for optimisation based on empirical studies.

Introduction
Approximation and Learning algorithms are fundamental tools that
deal with computationally hard problems and problems in which the
input is gradually disclosed over time. Both kinds of problems have a
large number of applications arising from a variety of fields, such as
algorithmic game theory, approximation classes, coloring and
partitioning, competitive analysis, computational finance, cuts and
connectivity, geometric problems, inapproximability results,
mechanism design, network design, packing and covering, paradigms
for design and analysis of approximation and online algorithms,
randomization techniques, real-world applications, and scheduling
problems. The past years have witnessed a large number of interesting
applications of various computational intelligence techniques, such as
rough sets, Neural Networks; Fuzzy Logic; Evolutionary Computing;
Artificial Immune Systems; Swarm Intelligence; Reinforcement Learning
and evolutionary computation, to intelligent multimedia processing. In
spite of numerous successful applications of computational intelligence
techniques in business and industry, it is sometimes difficult to explain
from a theoretical perspective. Therefore, we encourage authors to
present original chapter dealing with the incorporation of such CI
techniques into Learning and Approximation algorithms and
processes.
Objective of the Book
The main objective of this book is to provide a central source of
reference on computational intelligence algorithms that deals with all

* Conference background and goals
The IADIS CELDA 2008 conference aims to address the main issues
concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies
and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in
both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the
educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is
increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional
practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning,
constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative
approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological
advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents
systems. These developments have created both opportunities and
areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both
technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these

Call for Papers
The development of complex applications involving signal, image and control processing, is classically
divided into three consecutive steps: a theoretical study of the algorithms, a study of the target
architecture, and finally the implementation. Such a linear design flow is reaching its limits due to the
intense pressure on design cycle and strict performance constraints. The approach, called Algorithm-
Architecture-Matching, aims to leverage the design flow by a simultaneous study of both algorithmic
and architectural issues, taking into account multiple design constraints, as well as algorithm and
architecture optimizations.
Introducing new design methodologies is necessary when facing the new emerging applications as for
example advanced mobile communication systems or smart sensors based systems. This forms a
driving force for the future evolutions of embedded system designs methodologies.
The research community in Europe addressing these issues is very active both in academy and
industry. The goals of this Conference are to present the latest results in the domain of design and
architecture for signal and image processing and to initiate a regular meeting of European researchers
addressing this topic.
The DASIP Conference will give the opportunity for researchers to exchange the ideas and to build the
collaboration on emerging topics and technologies. It also aims to strength the links between the
European Information Society Technologies (IST) priorities and the researchers in the domain of
design and architecture for signal and image processing.
The DASIP Conference results from the success for more than ten years of the French workshop on
Algorithm-Architecture-Matching. The first edition called "Workshop on Algorithm Architecture
Adequation" was held in Lannion in 1992 (AAA 1992). During eight years a two-year event was
organized, AAA 1994 in Grenoble, AAA 1996 in Toulouse, AAA 1998 in Saclay and AAA 2000 in
Rocquencourt. In 2002 thanks to its widespread success the workshop was extended to all francophone

28. countries, JFAAA 2002 was held in Monastir and JFAAA 2005 in Dijon. In 2007 the workshop was
extended to the Europe in order to reach a wider community. Each edition was a great success
gathering more than one hundred of researchers from industry, academia and government
organizations. DASIP 2008 will aim to promote and strengthen the links between European researchers
further.

Title: Resource Management Techniques for Real-time Operating Systems in a Co-Design Framework

29. The session is dedicated to original contributions about resource management techniques for real-time
operating systems (RTOS) based on specific and realistic hardware devices in a co-design framework.
More precisely, the session will consider research papers which contribute to the techniques (resources
management, scheduling, worst case execution time (WCET) characterization, synchronization
mechanisms, etc.) used at operating system level but based on realistic, accurate and pragmatic
hardware issues. Examples of such hardware issues include but are not limited to: Multi-Processor
System-on-Chip (MPSoC) technologies, multi-core architectures, low-power aware platforms, context-
switch sensitive systems, caches memory devices, etc. Papers dealing with the fact that the different
abstraction layers impact each other in those techniques are welcome.For further information please e-

Title: Systems and Architectures for Real-time Image Processing
Due to rapid advancements in integrated circuit technology, the rich theoretical results that have been
developed by the image and video processing research community are now being increasingly applied
in practical systems to solve real-world image and video processing problems. Examples of such
systems are mobile phones, digital still/video/cell-phone cameras, portable media players, personal
digital assistants, high-definition television, video surveillance systems, industrial visual inspection
systems, medical imaging devices, vision-guided autonomous robots, and many other real-time
embedded systems. In these real-time systems, strict timing requirements demand that results are
available within a certain interval of time as imposed by the application. In addition to these strict
timing constraints, these systems also involve constraints such as area and power consumption. This
special session brings together practitioners and researchers working in all aspects of real-time image
and video processing. It will serve as a forum for exchange of novel ideas on corresponding hardware
developments, software tools, system solutions, and all types of applications.
Topics of interest of this special session include, but are not be restricted to:
- Real-time image and video processing algorithms- Real-time embedded image and video processing
systems- Real-time image and video processing architectures including dynamically reconfigurable
architectures (both conventional FPGAs and custom reconfigurable architectures), parallel DSP

embedded system design. This session is dedicated to contributions in the general areas of formal
models, transformations and architectures with a focus on reliable embedded system design and
their application for specific problems of interest. It will serve as a forum for exchange of novel

SCOPE
Hybridization of intelligent systems is a promising research field of modern
artificial/computational intelligence concerned with the development of the
next generation of intelligent systems. A fundamental stimulus to the
investigations
of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (HIS) is the awareness in the academic
communities that
combined approaches will be necessary if the remaining tough problems in
artificial/computational intelligence are to be solved. Recently,
Hybrid Intelligent Systems

40. are getting popular due to their capabilities in handling several
real world complexities
involving imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness. HIS'07 builds on the
success of last year's.
HIS'07 was held during September 17-19, 2007, Kaiserslautern - Germany
and attracted
participants from several countries.
HIS'08 is the Eighth International conference that brings together
researchers, developers,
practitioners, and users of soft computing, computational
intelligence, agents, logic programming,
and several other intelligent computing techniques. The aim of HIS'08
is to serve as a forum to
present current and future work as well as to exchange research ideas
in this field.
HIS'08 invites authors to submit their original and unpublished work
that demonstrates current
research using soft computing, computational intelligence and other
intelligent computing
techniques and their applications in science, technology, business and
commerce.
HIS'08 will focus on the following themes:

* Intelligent Internet Modeling, Communication and Networking
* Intelligent Data mining
* Computational Biology and Bioinformatics
* Intelligent Business Information Systems

Submitted papers should be original and contain contributions of
theoretical, experimental or
application nature, or be unique experience reports.
Papers must be submitted no later than May 31, 2008 and electronic
submission in PDF is required. The page limit for a full-length paper
is 6 pages. All submissions should be in the IEEE 8.5 two-column
format. Papers should contain up to 5 keywords.
Papers will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and
soundness, and will be reviewed by at least three or more independent
reviewers.
Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
Selected papers presented at the conference will be considered for
publication in special issues of several international Journals.
The HIS'08 Program Committee will select one winner for the Best Paper
Award (all regular papers are eligible)

41. and one winner for the Best Student Paper Award. For the best student
paper award, the student must be the sole author
of the paper or the first author and primary contributor. A cover
letter (clearly stating the satisfaction of the above mentioned
requirement) to the General Chair/Program Chair
must identify the paper as a candidate for this competition at the
time of submission. The award winners will each be presented
with an award certificate and a direct payment of 500 Euros at the
conference, and an extended version of
the award-winning papers will be considered for publication in the
International Journal of Hybrid Intelligent Systems (IJHIS).
It is assumed that all accepted manuscripts would be presented at the
conference. All accepted papers must be accompanied by a full paid
registration to appear in the proceedings.
All full papers are to be submitted in PDF electronically via the web site.

CONFERENCE SCOPE

Since the first conference held in Marseilles in 1982, ICLP has been the
premier international conference for presenting research in logic
programming.
Contributions (papers, position papers, and posters) are sought in all areas of
logic programming including but not restricted to:
* Theory: Semantic Foundations, Formalisms, Nonmonotonic Reasoning,
Knowledge Representation.
* Implementation: Compilation, Memory Management, Virtual Machines,
Parallelism.
* Environments: Program Analysis, Program Transformation, Validation
and
Verification, Debugging, Profiling, Integration.
* Language Issues: Extensions, Integration with Other Paradigms,
Concurrency,
Modularity, Objects, Coordination, Mobility, Higher Order, Types, Modes,
Programming Techniques.
* Related Paradigms: Abductive Logic Programming, Inductive Logic
Programming,
Constraint Logic Programming, Answer-Set Programming.
* Applications: Databases, Data Integration and Federation, Software
Engineering, Natural Language Processing, Web and Semantic Web,
Agents,
Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics
The three broad categories for submissions are:
(1) Technical papers, providing novel research contributions, innovative
perspectives on the field, and/or novel integrations across different
areas;
(2) Application papers, describing innovative uses of logic programming
technology in real-world application domains;
(3) Posters, ideal for presenting and discussing current work, not yet ready
for publication, for PhD thesis summaries and research project
overviews.
A separate session dedicated to the celebration of the 20th anniversary of

46. stable model semantics will also be part of the program.
Accepted papers and posters will be allocated time for presentation during
the
conference. At least one author of each accepted submission is expected
to
register and participate in the event.
In addition to papers and posters, the technical program will include invited
talks, advanced tutorials, specialized sessions, workshops, and a Doctoral
Student Consortium. Details, as they become available will be posted at:

PAPERS AND POSTERS
------------------
Papers and posters must describe original, previously unpublished research,
and
must not be simultaneously submitted for publication elsewhere. Emphasis
will
be placed on the novelty and innovative nature of the results (even if not
completely polished and refined).
All submissions will be peer-reviewed by an international panel.
Submissions
MUST contain substantial original, unpublished material.
All submissions must be written in English. Technical papers and
application
papers must not exceed 15 pages in the Springer LNCS format
(see http://www.springeronline.com/lncs/)
The limit for posters is 5 pages in the same format.

PUBLICATION
-----------
The proceedings of the conference will be published by Springer-Verlag in
the
LNCS series. All accepted papers and posters will be included in the
proceedings.
WORKSHOPS
---------
The ICLP'08 program will include several workshops. They are perhaps the
best
place for the presentation of preliminary work, novel ideas, and new open
problems to a more focused and specialized audience. Workshops also
provide a
venue for presenting specialised topics and opportunities for intensive
discussions and project collaboration in any areas related to logic
programming, including cross-disciplinary areas.

47. DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
-------------------
The Doctoral Consortium (DC) on Logic Programming is the 4th
Doctoral
consortium to provide doctoral students with the opportunity to present and
discuss their research directions, and to obtain feedback from both peers
and
word-renown experts in the field. The DC will also offer invited speakers and
panel discussions. Accepted participants will receive partial financial support
to attend the event and the main conference. The best paper and
presentation
from the DC will be given the opportunity to present in special session of the
main ICLP conference.
CELEBRATING 20th YEARS OF STABLE MODEL SEMANTICS
------------------------------------------------
The year 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the publication that introduced
the
stable model semantics for logic programs with negation. The paper titled
"The
stable semantics for logic programs" by Michael Gelfond and Vladimir
Lifschitz
was presented at ICLP-1988. It was a momentous event that gave rise to
a
vibrant subfield of logic programming known now as the answer-set
programming.
Its distinguishing aspects are close connections to the fields of knowledge
representation, satisfiability and constraint satisfaction, ever faster
computational tools, and a growing list of successful applications.
To celebrate the stable-model semantics, there will be a special session at
ICLP 2008 dedicated to answer-set programming. The session will feature
talks
by Michael Gelfond and Vladimir Lifschitz. as well as by other major
contributions to the field, presenting personal perspectives on the
stable-model semantics, its impact and its future. There will be a panel
discussion, and regular accepted ICLP papers falling into the answer-set
programming area will complete the program.
CONFERENCE VENUE
----------------
The conference will be held in the city of Udine, the capital of the historical
region of Friuli, Italy. Located between the Adriatic sea and the Alps, close
to Venice, Austria and Slovenia, Udine is a city of Roman origins, funded by
Emperor Otto in 983. Rich of historical sites, Udine is also famous for its
commercial and shopping opportunities and its outstanding wine and
culinary
traditions.
SUPPORT SPONSORING AND AWARDS

The conference is sponsored by the Association for Logic Programming
(ALP). The
ALP has funds to assist financially disadvantaged participants. The ALP is
planning to sponsor two awards for ICLP 2008: for the best technical paper
and
for the best student paper.
