Innovation for Learning - Griffith College
1. This project aims to apply the design thinking process to the discipline of innovation in learning.
Design Thinking is a non-linear process that aims to understand users and create innovative solutions
for prototyping and testing. The method consists of 5 phases of empathy, definition, idea, prototype,
and test.
According to the 2016 census in April 2016, there were 13,640 Brazilian citizens generally resident
in Ireland. Since 2006, the Brazilian population in Ireland has more than tripled in size. Although the
majority of immigrants are seasonal students, families that remain or start in Ireland face a major
challenge in the cultural gap between children and the family that remains in Brazil. This project aims
to study and propose a solution to how we can reduce the cultural differences of children living abroad?
1. Empathize: Research Your Users' Needs
In this first stage of the design thinking process, the objective was to gain an empathic
understandingof the problemthroughuser surveys.Inthis way,a surveywas created to obtainreal
information about users and their needs based on customer segment in figure 01.
Figure 01: Customer Segment. Organized by Brito
2. The survey was aimed at the segment of Brazilian families living in Ireland and the minders who
look after these children. The survey was published in Brazilians communities on Facebook and
Whatsapp, in all there were 45 responses (figure 02).
Figure 02: Survey published 05/05/2020 by Brito.
The first two questions were semi-open to understand what the greatest difficulty faced by
children in learning the language. In Figure 03, it was concluded that 51.11% pronounces well, reads
with difficulty, and has low knowledge of Brazilian Geography (knows how to locate the country on
the world map but does not know the division by regions).
How do you rate language knowledge, considering age limitations?
3. Figure 03 Question 01 How do you rate language knowledge, considering age limitations.
Second open question is How many bilingual children are you responsible for (parents and
guardians)? What are the family's greatest difficulties in learning Portuguese?
Most have betweenone and two children, in which the fatheris usually a native English speaker.
Most children understand spoken Portuguese well, however, teenagers prefer to communicate in
English, probably due to social interaction. The greatest interest of parents is centered on learning to
read and culture to improve communication with the family living in Brazil.
The figures 04 and 05 show that most parents are working, consequently, the income remains
despite the crisis caused by the pandemic.

4. Figure 05 Survey published in 05/05/2020 on Monkey Survey organized by Brito.
In the figures 06, 53.3% of parents would take books, supplies, or equipment for their children
to use at home for distance learning or independent study. It is a positive aspect because it demonstrates
an openness to the use of distance education and the rotation of books among the community.

2. Define—State Your Users' Needs and Problems
The definitions taken from the interviews to guide the ideation process are aligned in the figure 07.
5. Figure 07 The activities developed during the module.
6. From the research, the main needs of the public were mapped, thus concluding three questions
to guide the construction of the prototype. The current scenario of isolation due to COVID 19 crown
disease was also considered. The main conditions for creating the solution were access to the internet
and the parents' interest in teaching materials.
1. How might we involve teenagers to interact more with the Portuguese language?
2. How might we supply children's books?
3. How might we help parents to teach their children in Portuguese?
3. Ideation
To systematize and qualify the ideas, the screening made available in an article was
followed,inwhichMITCSAIL implemented“Pic2Recipe”,adeeplearningalgorithmthatuses
neural networkstofindpatternsandconnectionsbetweenimagesandrecipes.Followingthe
example in table 01 the process of ideation was concluded:
1. Is your idea a
vitamin or a
painkiller?
The idea is not necessarily to improve an existing problem but to offer
pleasure or relief to the user. The first option would be to offer classes,
however, this is easily accessedthroughyoutube, andasthe survey showed
users have access to the internet.
2. Is your idea
easy to
monetize?
The first idea wasa mobile library for subscribers,in view of the difficulty
of importing products. What invalidated this idea was the problem with
COVID-19 and the fact that the public is a family so that the books could
be damaged more easily. From there, the possibility arose to create an
application with 30% of the free activities. Another way to generate
revenue would be to advertise local Brazilian restaurants, which would like
to be advertised to a target audience.
3. Is your idea
simple?
Yes, the use of applications is part of the daily lives of families.
4. Is your idea
personally
relevant?
Is your idea personally relevant? Absolutely. With this application,
families would have relevant support for the education of bilingual
children.
7. 5. Do you have
follow
through?,
With a good development, design, and growth team
6. Do you have a
big market?
According to last Cense in Ireland yes, and it could expand to other
countries with Brazilians immigrants.
8. 4. Prototype and test: Minimum Viable Product (MVP)- prototype
Using the Application Factory platform where you can create an application without
the need for prior programming knowledge. The application has been completed to meet the
main needs mapped by users.
Encourage children to embrace all languages positively,
Nurture children’s understanding of linguistic diversity in the classroom and in the
community they live in,
Enable children to build on prior knowledge and experience of language and language
learning,
Encourage children of different languages and cultures to be proud of and to share their
heritage,

FEEDBACK
Eric Ries, defined an MVP asthat version of a new product which allows a teamto collect the maximum
amount of validated learning about customers with the least effort. This validated learning comes in the
form of whether your customers will actually purchase your product.
The application wasevaluated by a family due to the short period betweenthe last class and the delivery
of the work. The parents liked the layout, although it was very rude and pointed out that it would be
9. interesting to have a channel to talk to Brazilian professionals about the education of bilingual children.
Therefore, in the final product, it would be interesting to publish articles on education, tips from
professionals and to advertise paid teachers and psychologists who wish to work with this audience.

The sales pitch would be based on my story. Storytelling is a means of sharing and interpreting
experiences. The narrative is most effective when it takes place in social settings that provide authentic
social clues about how knowledge should be applied. So, I would share that I had Liam alone in Ireland
because my husband was working in Mexico and my family in Brazil and only four months later my
parents were able to meet him. The biggest challenge would be to reduce the gaps between family
members who remained in Brazil and the child growing up abroad, as they will have little contact.
