Sign Up for a RefWorks Account
1. Go to https://refworks.proquest.com/.
2. SelectCreate Account usingyourJMU email
3. Create yourown password
4. You will receiveanActivationemailtoverifyyouremail address.You
mustconfirmactivationbefore you canloginthe firsttime.
5. Leave RefWorksopenwhilesearchingforarticles.
Direct Export to RefWorks
JMU Librariesprovidesaccesstomore than350 databases. Many of these databasesoffera Direct Export to
RefWorksfeature. The directions beloware forEBSCOdatabases. Otherdatabasesmayhave slightlydifferent
options. Contacta librarianforhelpwithanydatabasesthatdo not offer directexporttoRefWorks.
1. Selecteachsource by selectingthe Addto Collectionicon.
2. Whenyouare readyto exportyourcitationinformation,selectthe Foldericon.
3. Selectthe itemsyouwantusingthe checkboxes.
4. Selectthe Export icon. Direct Export to Refworks shouldbe selectedbydefault.
5. ClickSave. A windowwill open showingyouthe ImportReferencesbox (see below).
Save References from the Web
For databasesthatdo not have DirectExport,youcan clickon the Save to RefWorksbookmarktocapture
articlesandwebsites.
1. Clickon [your name]inthe upper-rightcornertosee
a dropdownmenuof additional options.
2. Clickon Toolsand clickthe Install Save to RefWorks
button
3. Drag-and-dropthe Save to RefWorksbuttonto your
Bookmarkor Favorites.
4. Use the buttontocapture contentfromany website.

general websites,soalwaysdouble-checkbefore
saving.

View Last Imported Records in RefWorks
1. In the ImportReferencesbox,click
OK to go to your Recentitem.
2. You will see the citationinformation
for yourmost recentlyimported
article(s).
3. Use the Check for Full Text @ JMU
buttonto if you needtogetback to
the article inthe database.
Create Collections and Organize Citations
1. ClickFoldericon in RefWorks,click +Create,provide aName,and
hitCreate Collection.
2. Selectthe referencesyouwanttomove to a folderbyusingthe
checkboxesbyeachitem.
3. Clickthe Foldericonin RefWorks.
4. SelectaCollection name,hitApply, andall checkeditemswill move tothatfolder.
Create a Bibliography
1. Clickthe Create Bibliography button
at the topof the RefWorksscreen.
2. Choose which ReferencestoInclude.
3. Choose a citationstyle.
4. ClickCopy to Clipboardto put the
bibliographyinyourdocument.

Using Google Docs Add-On to Format In-Text Citations and Bibliographies
1. Log-into Google Docs. Opena blankdocumentandselect “Add-ons”,“GetAdd-ons”andsearchfor
“RefWorks”. Once youfind it,justclickon the “free”buttonto addit. Approve the permissionsrequest.
2. In yourGoogle Doc, start writingand whenyouare ready toinsertyourfirst citation,select “Add-ons”,
“ProQuest RefWorks”,“Manage Citations”
3. You will have aRefWorksscreenpopoutto the right.The first
time youwill needtologinwithyourRefWorksaccount
information.
4. Once you are loggedin,youwill see yourcitationssavedinyour
RefWorksaccount.Navigate the resourcesbyCollection/Folder
(Area A) or bysearchingyourcollection (AreaB).
5. Selectthe itemyouwantto cite (Area C).EitherhitCite Thisto
create an immediate reference orEditand Cite torevise the
citation. Whenyoucite a resource,itwill automaticallyenter
boththe in-textcitationatthe locationof yourcursorand start a
Reference listatthe endof the paper.
6. To change the citationstyle orupdate the document,hitthe
Gear box (Area D).
