How do little elephants grow up to be BIG
elephants?
• Multicellularity
• We all start out as
a single cell
• Key Concept:
Growth occurs when
more cells are
made, NOT
because cells get
bigger.
Skin cancer - the abnormal
growth of skin cells - most
often develops on skin
exposed to the sun.

 What are the three phases of
Interphase?
 What happens during G1 phase?
 What happens during S phase?
 What happens during G2 phase?
• Chromosomes are copied
(# doubles)
• Chromosomes (DNA)
appear as threadlike
spaghetti called
chromatin

• Centrioles (or poles)
appear and begin to

Cytokinesis is different in plants!
The cell wall makes plant cells rigid, so they can’t move inward and separate like
animal cells can.
Vesicles filled with cell wall parts are towed to the middle of the cell.
They fuse together, forming a “cell plate.”
The cell plate becomes the new cell wall. Honors draw this

 What is binary
fission?
 Why does the DNA
need to move to
either side of the cell
before the cell
divides?
 What is binary
fission?
 Binary fission is
bacteria’s
version of cell
division.
 Why does the DNA
need to move to either
side of the cell before
the cell divides?
 DNA needs to be on
opposite sides of the
cell because when the
cell splits in two each
new cell needs its own
copy of DNA
