Romance in short films
1.
2. Normally targeted at females due to their
connection with emotions and feelings
Typical boy meets girl story line
Normally would expect to see emotional
scenes, gender differences, relationships,
sexual concepts, and status differences
between characters
3. Narrative
Normally straight forward the narratives in
romance tend to start with the introduction of
one character – typical boy meets girl
scenario. Throughout the film there are
hidden aspects to the storyline as to why they
could be a good match
Commonly an argument and a separation
incorporating an aspect of sadness to the
story
However, in most romantic genres they tend
to end ‘happily ever after’ which is
traditionally known
4. Setting
Stereotypical locations are common in
romantic films, easily identifiable locations
that are central to allow them to be
revisited within the film
Knowing the setting helps the audience
imagine what is going to happen in the
film and where the action will take place
5. Use of Sound in Romantic films
Use of sound influences romantic films
because it helps the audience establish the
mood and atmosphere
I have discovered from my research so far I
don’t like the use of amateur voice overs and
if we are to use a voice over I would want to
make sure we had a detailed script for it
The use of music sets the mood in romance
films as a convention because it is common
for happier music to be played on parts that
require lots of empathy
6. Editing
Juxtaposition is regularly used In romance
films to express two sides of the story
Shot reverse shot is a good example of an
editing technique used in romance because
it enables the audience to gain
understanding of each characters facial
expressions
This is enhanced by the use of close ups which
can be used to mark the moment and draw
the audiences attention to that specific point
