There are many useful leadership models, but the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership® revealed by the Kouzes-Posner study is one of the most memorable and easy to implement. THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE Kouzes and Posner “Based upon evidence collected from around the world and over decades, THE LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE provides guidance on how to lead and inspiration to make the effort.” —Jeffrey Pfeffer, professor, Stanford Business School, Kouzes and Posner sug- gest that “practice” is what leadership is all about. Their model, THE FIVE PRACTICES OF EFFECTIVE LEADER- SHIP, is offered as a guide for all modern day leaders in all aspects of administration. The au- thors found, when re- searching for their book, that these five practices were common among ex- emplary leaders. This book is meant to be used as a tool by leaders to guide others to reach their maximum potential. Kouzes and Posner warn, however, that in order to become an effective guide for others one must have their own house in order first. They suggest and offer questions by which lead- ers may challenge them- selves as to their be- liefs, practices and abili- ties. Gayle Hamilton speaks to this as she says, ”You can’t follow someone who isn’t credi- ble, who doesn’t truly believe what they are doing-and how they are doing it.” Gayle is head of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company, one of the many exemplary leaders that the authors have showcased in their book. Each practice in the book has with it nu- merous examples of leaders at their best. Along with the Five Practices, are the Ten Commitments of Leader- ship. These are offered as time-tested strate- gies through which lead- ers attain their goals. 1. Find your voice by clarifying your personal values. 2. Set the example by aligning actions with shared values. 3. Envision the future by imag- ining exciting and ennobling possibilities. 4. Enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations. 5. Search for opportunities by seeking innovative ways to grow, change, and improve. 6. Experiment and take risks by constantly generating small wins and learning from mistakes. 7. Foster collaboration by promoting cooperative goals and building trust 8. Strengthen others by sharing power and discretion. 9. Recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individ- ual excellence. 10. This session is about you. And about your career. Where you want it to go. And how you can make it happen, whether you have children, are thinking about having children or have caring responsibilities. I also hope it will hold value and interest for those simply interested in exploring their own career development. The session is focused on transformation of self, using key events in the career journey of one individual to support others in exploring their own career development. 18 months after graduating and being appointed to my first role at Oxford Brookes University, I made the transition from young free and single 20 something, to single working parent, navigating the complexities of balancing brand new, and unexpected, parenthood with a fledgling career. Since then, I have been afforded, and fully exploited, a number of opportunities for career enhancement, and I have been given the space to do this alongside being a parent. This environment has enabled to me to take a burgeoning career and a child and be fully committed to both of them. 9 1/2 years and six roles later, it has become increasingly important to me to support colleagues in their career development, and in balancing their varied commitments in order to lead a full and satisfying working life. Using key experiences throughout my career for context, this session will explore the ways in which you view yourself; the way in which others view you; opportunities for (and barriers to) development; the sphere of control you exercise over your own future; and your allies and support network. The session will also explore the skills you use daily in your roles outside of the office to enhance your own professional practice, and how we, as individuals, can help set the tone for future managers, creating future generations of manager who support their colleagues in their development, regardless of their parental or caring status. The session will use small discussion groups to explore certain topics, individual and personal reflections which may or may not be shared, and personal pledges to ourselves about the next steps we want to take. It is intended to be a supportive, group session, where Chatham House Rules and commitment to confidentiality will be key to its success.

The Leadership Challenge Kouzes & Posner (2017) The Leadership Challenge “Leadership is not the reserve of a few charismatic men and women. It is a process that ordinary people use when they are bringing forth the best from themselves and others. What we’ve discovered is that people make extraordinary things happen by liberating the leader within everyone” (Kouzes and Posner, 2017). The Kouzes & Posner Model • Leaderships practices (x 5) • Leadership Commitments (x 10) • Leadership Behaviours (x 30) (Kouzes and Posner, 2017). Five exemplary Leadership Practices that enabled ordinary people to be successful leaders: 1. Model the way 2. Inspire a shared vision 3. Challenge the process 4. Enable others to act 5. Encourage the heart (Kouzes and Posner, 2017). Becoming a leader 1. Model the way People will not believe the message unless they believe the messenger DWYSYWD • Leaders must stand for something, believe in something and care about something • Leaders set the example with courage …in their own style expressing their values in their actions (Kouzes & Posner, 2017) Becoming a leader 2. Inspire a shared vision Leaders believe they can make a difference. •Have a clear vision and communicate this with your team- get them on board •Enlist others by getting people to see how their own dreams can be realised through a common vision (Kouzes & Posner, 2017) Becoming a leader 3. Challenge the process search for opportunities to challenge the status quo; seek innovative ways to change, grow and improve experiment and take risks review the best available evidence and ask others for their preferences challenge the assumption that “because we have always done it that way”, that it is the right way.
