Adolescence is a formative stage in an individual’s life and is often a period of change, growth and learning for many in this age group (10 to 19 years). However, adversity is also common during this phase, and adolescents can become vulnerable to mental health issues if these problems are not adequately addressed or help is not provided early enough.

chapter 16 Emotional and Social Development in Middle Adulthood Midlife is a time of increased generativity—giving to and guiding younger generations. Charles Callis, director of New Zealand’s Olympic Museum, shows visiting schoolchildren how to throw a discus. His enthusiastic demonstration conveys the deep sense of satisfaction he derives from generative activities. chapter outline · Erikson’s Theory: Generativity versus Stagnation · ■ SOCIAL ISSUES: HEALTH Generative Adults Tell Their Life Stories Other Theories of Psychosocial Development in Midlife · Levinson’s Seasons of Life · Vaillant’s Adaptation to Life · Is There a Midlife Crisis? · Stage or Life Events Approach Stability and Change in Self-Concept and Personality · Possible Selves · Self-Acceptance, Autonomy, and Environmental Mastery · Coping with Daily Stressors · Gender Identity · Individual Differences in Personality Traits · ■ BIOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT What Factors Promote Psychological Well-Being in Midlife? Relationships at Midlife · Marriage and Divorce · Changing Parent–Child Relationships · Grandparenthood · Middle-Aged Children and Their Aging Parents · Siblings · Friendships · ■ SOCIAL ISSUES: HEALTH Grandparents Rearing Grandchildren: The Skipped-Generation Family · Vocational Life · Job Satisfaction · Career Development · Career Change at Midlife · Unemployment · Planning for Retirement One weekend when Devin, Trisha, and their 24-year-old son, Mark, were vacationing together, the two middle-aged parents knocked on Mark’s hotel room door. “Your dad and I are going off to see a crafts exhibit,” Trisha explained. “Feel free to stay behind,” she offered, recalling Mark’s antipathy toward attending such events as an adolescent. “We’ll be back around noon for lunch.” “That exhibit sounds great!” Mark replied. “I’ll meet you in the lobby.” “Sometimes I forget he’s an adult!” exclaimed Trisha as she and Devin returned to their room to grab their coats. “It’s been great to have Mark with us—like spending time with a good friend.” In their forties and fifties, Trisha and Devin built on earlier strengths and intensified their commitment to leaving a legacy for those who would come after them. When Mark faced a difficult job market after graduating from college, he returned home to live with Trisha and Devin and remained there for several years. With their support, he took graduate courses while working part-time, found steady employment in his late twenties, fell in love, and married in his mid-thirties. With each milestone, Trisha and Devin felt a sense of pride at having escorted a member of the next generation into responsible adult roles. Family activities, which had declined during Mark’s adolescent and college years, increased as Trisha and Devin related to their son as an enjoyable adult companion. Challenging careers and more time for community involvement, leisure pursuits, and each other contributed to a richly diverse and gratifying tim.

1 | S o c i a l i z a t i o n SOCIALIZATION Learning Outcomes At the end of this chapter you will be able to do the following. Define socialization. Compare nature and nurture as socialization influences. Identify agents and agencies of socialization. Evaluate the study of cases of feral children in terms of their importance to our knowledge of socialization. Recall and define the steps in determining a self-concept. Evaluate Dramaturgy for its application to every day life. WHAT IS SOCIALIZATION? Socialization is the process by which people learn characteristics of their group’s norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors. Through socialization we learn the culture of the society into which we have been born. In the course of this process, a personality develops. A personality is comprised of patterns of behavior and ways of thinking and feeling that are distinctive for each individual. Babies are not born with the social or emotional tools needed to contribute to society as properly functioning social actors. They have to learn all the nuances of proper behavior, how to meet expectations for what is expected of them, and everything else needed to become members of society. As newborns interact with family and friends they learn the expectations of their society (family, community, state, and nation). From the first moments of life, children begin a process of socialization wherein parents, family, and friends establish an infant’s social construction of reality, or what people define as real because of their background assumptions and life experiences with others. An average U.S. child’s social construction of reality includes knowledge that he or she belongs, and can depend on others to meet his or her needs. It also includes the privileges and obligations that accompany membership in his or her family and community. In a typical set of social circumstances, children grow up through a predictable set of life stages: infancy, preschool, K-12 school years, young adulthood, adulthood, middle adulthood, and finally later-life adulthood. Most will leave home as young adults, find a spouse or life partner in their mid-to late 20s and work in a job for pay. 2 | S o c i a l i z a t i o n THREE LEVELS OF SOCIALIZATION When discussing the average U.S. child, most agree that the most imperative socialization takes place early in life and in identifiable levels. Primary socialization typically begins at birth and moves forward until the beginning of the school years. Primary socialization includes all the ways the newborn is molded into a social being capable of interacting in and meeting the expectations of society. Most primary socialization is facilitated by the family, friends, day care, and to a certain degree various forms of media. Children watch about three hours of TV per day (by the time the average child attends kindergarten she has watched about 5,000 hours of TV.

section six In no order of things is adolescence the simple time of life. —Jean Erskine Stewart American Writer, 20th CenturyAdolescence Adolescents try on one face after another, seeking to find a face of their own. Their generation of young people is the fragile cable by which the best and the worst of their parents’ generation is transmitted to the present. In the end, there are only two lasting bequests parents can leave youth—one is roots, the other wings. This section contains two chapters: “Physical and Cognitive Development in Adolescence” and “Socioemotional Development in Adolescence.” Page 337chapter 11PHYSICAL AND COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT IN ADOLESCENCE chapter outline 1 The Nature of Adolescence Learning Goal 1 Discuss the nature of adolescence. 2 Physical Changes Learning Goal 2 Describe the changes involved in puberty, as well as changes in the brain and sexuality during adolescence. Puberty The Brain Adolescent Sexuality 3 Issues in Adolescent Health Learning Goal 3 Identify adolescent problems related to health, substance use and abuse, and eating disorders. Adolescent Health Substance Use and Abuse Eating Disorders 4 Adolescent Cognition Learning Goal 4 Explain cognitive changes in adolescence. Piaget’s Theory Adolescent Egocentrism Information Processing 5 Schools Learning Goal 5 Summarize some key aspects of how schools influence adolescent development. The Transition to Middle or Junior High School Effective Schools for Young Adolescents High School Extracurricular Activities Service Learning ©Image Source/Getty Images Fifteen-year-old Latisha developed Page 338a drinking problem, and she was kicked off the cheerleading squad for missing too many practice sessions—but that didn’t make her stop drinking. She and her friends began skipping school regularly so they could drink. Fourteen-year-old Arnie is a juvenile delinquent. Last week he stole a TV set, struck his mother and bloodied her face, broke some streetlights in the neighborhood, and threatened a boy with a wrench and hammer. Twelve-year-old Katie, more than just about anything else, wanted a playground in her town. She knew that the other kids also wanted one, so she put together a group that generated funding ideas for the playground. They presented their ideas to the town council. Her group attracted more youth, and they raised money by selling candy and sandwiches door-to-door. The playground became a reality, a place where, as Katie says, “People have picnics and make friends.” Katie’s advice: “You won’t get anywhere if you don’t try.” Adolescents like Latisha and Arnie are the ones we hear about the most. But there are many adolescents like Katie who contribute in positive ways to their communities and competently make the transition through adolescence. Indeed, for most young people, adolescence is not a time of rebellion, crisis, pathology, and deviance. A far more accurate vision of adolescence is that it is a time of evaluation, decision making, commi.
