Notes for the session is available here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zr51nZ4VRjVNLixeRc_4SPa-liSALADLTbJ1RUJYcpo/edit "This workshop will centre on how current discourse around Open Science has tended to focus on the creation of new technological platforms and tools to facilitate sharing and reuse of a wide range of research outputs, but has largely avoided tackling many important issues related to inclusion of a diversity of perspectives in science. We believe a feminist perspective can help to surface these issues, particularly with regard to the need for inclusive infrastructure, which are especially important as Open Science increasingly becomes part of government agendas and policies. We expect that researchers, practitioners and policy makers interested in Open Science will benefit from this workshop to think about issues of inclusivity in Open Science that are not receiving sufficient attention. We expect participants who attend this workshop will gain awareness about relevant resources and work that has been done by feminist technoscience scholars to expand the perspectives of Open Science. We hope that participants will take away new possibilities for their work that they may not have considered before. For policy makers, this workshop will be particularly relevant to help think about how evidence for Open Science should be assessed from a more feminist inclusive standpoint. The workshop will also present results from a two-day workshop on Feminist Open Science that will take place prior to the ELPUB workshop, with the intent of soliciting feedback and collaboration."

This is the presentation of the keynote I gave to the The "Software Codes of Democracy: Web Platforms for New Politics Workshop, which was held in Milan, Italy 13-15 Sept 2013 http://codicidellademocrazia.partecipate.it/ Abstract Social media are increasingly used to support online debate and facilitate citizens’ engagement in policy and decision-making. Nevertheless the online dialogue spaces we see on the Web today typically provide flat listings of comments, or threads that can be viewed by ‘subject’ line. These are fundamentally chronological views which offer no insight into the logical structure of the ideas, such as the coherence or evidential basis of an argument. This hampers both quality of citizens’ participation and effective assessment of the state of the debate. Within the landscape of existing community debate and ideation tools, the talk will introduce a new class of emerging online deliberation platforms – coming from research on Hypermedia, Collective Intelligence and Argumentation – that enable more structured, engaging and transparent online deliberation processes. The talk will focus on the description of some of these technologies and summarise research studies in which they have been used to effectively support online deliberation in the Education, Healthcare and Public sector. The talk will conclude proposing reflections and future research on collective intelligence and online deliberation platforms to socially innovate and to re-engage citizens with the democratic process.

The goals of this meeting/informal discussion are: (a) To deliver a short presentation of the green-paper focused on the Brazilian OER Project. Abstract: " The State and Challenges of OER in Brazil. by, Carolina Rossini The paper map the Open Educational Resources efforts in Brazil, understanding the role they play in the educational context and if they are developed under a consistent educational policy. Questions of how educational policy is favorable to OER, and how much public funding flows into educational materials (mainly textbooks) are discussed. The paper starts with a brief introduction of how the concept of Open Educational Resources dialogues with the concept of development. The second portion explores the state of education in Brazil, its policy governance, structures and institutions. The third section is focused on an analysis of Brazilian educational projects as fulfilling or not the concept of Open Educational Resources as understood by UNESCO and under the principles of the Cape Town Declaration on Open Education. The fourth section is focused on the issue of textbooks in Brazil, analyzing public policies and governmental purchase programs, and also the challenges faced for the equivalent to the K-12 level and to the college level, also touching on the flow of public investments into the production and distribution of textbooks. Finally, a series of policy recommendations is drawn for further discussion." (b) To develop discussion around the validity of the green-paper recommendations as recommendations that are horizontal to different countries, building upon the Cape Town Declaration; (c) To discuss the role played by copyright and open licensing; (d) Open X Free: strategies and benefits in diferent national contexts; (e) To build collaboration among country projects.

Led by Duke University, the OLE Project intends to build a design document for an open source library management system which will be based on the software design philosophy of service oriented architecture (SOA). SOA is becoming a dominant trend in technology as early adopters have shown that it provides the benefit of an agile system, one that is flexible in response to information demands.
