21. The EU Water Framework Directive 2000
Legislation that covers all of the EU member states and:

What do macro-invertebrates respond to...point out that there is a differential response within the community to stress offering the opportunity to assess ecosystem health based on the relative abundance of different taxa. The presence of stoneflies shows that the ecosystem is in good condition (with the exception of nemouridae) moving towards chironimdae worms (midge fly larvae) and Oligochaete worms (a subclass of the earthworm class – very easy to indentify). These thrive in low oxygen water and tolerate high pollution levels.
