fuel and core materials : combustible et internes ?
There has been no breakthrough in materials from Generation II to Generation III : the same materials will be used for pressure vessel, internals, fuel claddings…This graph show the requirements of the current materials in terms of temperature and dose. Now if we superpose the requirements of the 6 Gen IV systems, we notice immediately the major challenges of high temperatures and high doses. It is thus necessary to assess the limits of current materials, develop and qualify new materials. With the red frame the system where CEA has signed the system arrangement.
Slide #32 : R&D strategy of France for future Nuclear Systems The French R& D strategy for future nuclear systems is based on the will to maintain several technological options, in the framework of GEN IV criteria for sustainable development. We have mainly three directions of research: Development of fast reactors with close fuel cycle, along two tracks : Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) and Gas fast Reactor (GFR), with new processes for spent fuel treatment and recycling. This must permit to build a Fast Reactor Prototype about 2020 and an industrial deployment about 2040. Hydrogen production and very high temperature process heat supply to the industry , with the VHTR and the water splitting processes, Last but not least, new improvements for LWRs (fuel, systems…) to increase their safety and their competitiveness.
