Through the Eyes of a Young Boy
In Araby, by James Joyce, the story is told by a young boy who has his heart on a girl. The boy's
name is never mentioned in the story and neither is the girls'. Since the narrator is the young boy, his
name is never mentioned. In the story, the girl is only mentioned as Mangan's sister. The point of
view, plot, and setting all help make up this story. The narrator in this story is the young boy and he
tells the story through his point of view.
Point of view is composed of two different parts, the voice and the focus. The voice is the narrator
telling the story and the focus is the visual angle that the narrator uses to portray events in the story.

sister. The bazaar is called Araby, which happens to be the title of the story. The bazaar is a
charitable event one that the boy hopes to attend. By the time the boy could attend the bazaar, it
was shutting down for the evening as the boy had arrived late into the night. The boy was
discouraged into buying any items from the vendors because the one that was open the vendor had

Point of view is very crucial to stories, it tells us the story and the way it gets told. There are four
point of views which are the following: omniscient, third–person limited, first person, and objective.
"Eveline" by James Joyce is told in third–limited person point of view which only focuses on the
thoughts and feelings of Eveline. The narrator demonstrates the knowledge of one character but
lacks knowledge in other characters. In Eveline, we only see the situation and setting through her
eyes. "The Lottery" is told in the objective point of view which doesn't show any knowledge of
one character's feelings or thoughts. The narrator is telling what he sees or hears, we only get the

Gordon Korman, where the first person changes throughout the book. While the novel keeps first
person from start to finish, Gordon Korman toys with who is in control of the first person. Whilst
this is very odd, and not like any other book, this point of view helps the book give depth to the

Yes, the protagonist in the story is narrating, but those thoughts are presented to the readers in the
form of a journal. As the days go by that the wife is held in the room, she is documenting all her
feelings and experiences, instead of simply thinking it in her head. This introduces the first idea
about women and mental illness presented in "The Yellow Wallpaper." At the beginning of the
story, the wife wrote, "I would not say this to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a

Third Person Limited– Bradbury uses third person limited to narrator the story. In this point of view,
the narrator knows all of the inner thoughts, feelings, and concerns of one character and their
perspective on what is happening, but does not know everything about the world in which
Fahrenheit 451 takes place in. This type of narrative uses the words he, she, and they. For example,
after Clarisse disappears, Montag's feelings were described in detail. "Clarisse was gone. He didn't

Point of view is something that many people argue as relativistic and subjective. To explain; it is
the external circumstances and events that give reality shape or form which is dependent upon a

was pressed by the Burmese into committing a senseless killing that he did not deem necessary.

example of characterization, which would not be possible without the effective use of point of

the truth to her best friend in India, but the reader knows Mrs. Dutta's true feelings. Also we can
see how the voice affects the plot of each story. Since both Everything That Rises Must Converge
and Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter have a similar voice, the plots in both stories are affected almost
the same way. With the voice being from a third person point of view the reader is able to know
the qualities of each character. In Everything That Rises Must Converge knowing both emotions
for Julian and his mother, we are able to see both sides of what they are thinking. This helps with
knowing the actions that might take place next and also to know why the character responded in
such a way. Julian's mother is very prejudice, and since the reader is able to know her feeling we
can see why Julian acted the way he did when he saw an African American man get on the bus. In
Mrs. Dutta Writes a Letter knowing Mrs. Dutta's feeling about living with her son we can see why
she is reluctant to share that information with her best friend as she thinks it would be un–honorable.
We can also see that the feeling is mutual with her son's wife. This explains the harsh attitude against
Mrs. Dutta and Mrs. Dutta's need to hide things from the family. In both stories

Point Of View In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
What if a story was told in different point of views, there would be many copies of that book.In
this story "Everyday Use", by Alice Walker would very different. The characters are all different in
their own way so they all have different point of views. Now having read the story from the mom's
perspective what if it was told by the daughters and narrator, it would totally different told by
another character in the story. Everyone is different in their own ways so what if the spoiled child
is told no she would blow. Then the child who does not really care for anything but other people.
The whole story would be truly turned around, speaking from other points of view.
To begin with, in this story Maggie is not telling it but if it was in her point of view it would be a
plot twist. She is just like her mother not much education, hard worker and true to her culture.
Maggie is honored more she understood her culture. Her mother saw that she was rawer, unlike

Point of view is a very important element of literature. In the book Literature Reading, Reacting,
Writing point of view is described as, "the vantage point from which events are presented"
(Kirszner and Mandell 300). The point of view of a story is simply the view of whoever's telling it.
Kirszner and Mandell inform readers that if the narrator can enter all the characters' minds and
always knows what is going on, then he is omniscient (303). Kirszner and Mandell also tell readers
that if a narrator can only enter one character's mind, then he is a limited omniscient narrator (304).

He rants, "We want you decently dressed when you come in here" (Updike 227). However, the
definition of decency changes overtime. Sammy cannot tell readers what it is, but he could give
readers his opinion of how the girls were treated. He feels they were treated unjustly. The theme of
the story is pretty simple, nothing is set in stone. Readers get to see this theme outlined when the
girls walk in the store dressed against the norm. Additionally, neither the reader nor the manager
expected Sammy to quit his job. His job was important considering the time era. However, times do
change. Everyone has a point in which they get fed up. These girls appear to be reminiscent of the
hippie subculture. All the sexual overtone in Sammy's thoughts are also reminiscent of the hippie
culture. Overall, the story was better told by Sammy because he offered us the perspective of
someone in the middle. Sammy's perspective, while subjective in thought, was generally examining
instead of asserting.
John Updike's "A&P" was heavily affected by the element of point of view. Sammy's view not only
helped define other characters, but it helped define the theme as well. The fact that the narrator was
not third person helped maintain the focus of the story. The story greatly benefitted from having a
first person narrator. This is because the character of Sammy offered readers some middle ground.
