Education helps preserve and renew common cultural values in society and teaches important social and civic values like citizenship, equality, tolerance, and respect. These skills are especially important now as all member states face increasing social and cultural diversity. The European Parliament and Council recommend key competences for lifelong learning to address this challenge.
