You’ve got some friends and such, but they’re only SO helpful…
You’re yelling at people to get out of the water…You’ve got this big a shark with a personal vendetta against you…
The shark ate a baby… Things have gotten out of control…
Today I’m going to present you with a few tools to help in your battle at home.
For those of you who might not see the value of internal communication, What is the FIRST thing the enemy does before invading? Jams communications
We’re going to talk about Facebook. How many here have a Facebook account? It’s not just for college kids anymore.
First, let’s talk about Facebook. How many here have Facebook accounts? Granted, there are some personal security measures to take, and we hear about officers posting really dumb things from time to time, but This is one of the most EFFECTIVE tools for your associations available.
One of the benefits of Facebook is the ability to measure your effectiveness. Focus on – POST VIEWS Since January of this year, we’ve had 29,478 post views. Not bad for an organization of 95 people.
You can track your effectiveness online. For example, we had 80 hits on our site. That’s in addition to the 35 people who “recommended” it to their friends on Facebook from the news site, to their friends list. If you average 100 “friends” on Facebook, that’s 3500 people who are exposed to our message, from one information stream. Imaging if you had multiple information streams going out all the time.
So where do you get all this cool information? I thought you’d never ask! Google news alerts.
This is when all of the worry warts and little ladder climbing suck ups begin to vapor lock and run to tattle to the nearest administrator. This is good because it generates our message to an even wider population. The administrators and city management in turn become our unwitting accomplices.
We have in effect, by utilizing the free social media available on the web, framed the debate. We now have the ability to get ahead of a story and go on the offensive. When we are making headlines, and they have to respond, THAT is political power. My father ran newspapers for years. He used to say that you don’t start a fight with people who buy ink by the barrels full. While I believe that is true, and the local media can be one of our biggest allies, the new media sources available to us on the internet have changed the playing field.
So, you can see that there are tons of services to choose from. Facebook, Gmail, and Blogger are the central sites we’ve used, but what you do is only limited by your imagination.
Let me leave you with this last thought, from a man who goes down in history as possibly the best example of someone who was able to draw attention. P.T. Barnum. The man who knew the power of molding and getting out ahead of the debate. A man who would often write derogatory letters to the editor under assumed names, in towns his circus was going to visit. Decrying the “immoral” and scandalous circus that was about to come to town. A circus people flocked to see what all the commotion was about.
