Get speaking conversation cards

These discussion cards are the perfect prompts to get your students speaking in class.
Each set has basic instructions and activity suggestions. 40 sets that can
be used in a variety of ways, for example:
1. Cut up the cards and have students in small groups chose a card and ask someone
in the group. Make sure students ask follow up questions!
2. Cut up and students walk around the classroom surveying classmates about the topic
or card question. Debrief and discuss interesting topics as a class.
3. Games. Students challenge each other to complete the discussion prompt or guess if
an answer is true or not (see the True or Fcards). Or play in groups for points.
There are many other ways to use the cards. See the brief suggestions provided with
each set in the Table of Contents.

A student chooses an "IF" card. They should answer the "if" question in
the proper tense. Then that student asks another the same question and
hypothesis. "What would you do if ......?"
Students choose a card and finish the sentence in their own words. Or
a student chooses a card and states the prompt and another student
must finish it off.

In pairs or small groups. A student or group chooses a debate topic card
and must state 3 supporting points for the topic. The other student or
group counters by stating 3 oppossing reasons. for the other topic.
True or false? A student chooses a card and has to finish the prompt or
question. They can tell the truth or a lie. Other students guess if it is true
or false. Can play as a game - 1 point for each correct guess.
Categories. A student chooses a card and doesn't show it to others. The
student states the category. Other students have X seconds to state
things or words related to the category. A point for each one that
matches the card. Or you can play the game like Taboo.
A student chooses a card and asks a classmate the question. The
student answers. If the answer is yes, other students ask 2 follow up
questions using the past tense.
Useful things. A student choses a card and states the topic. Other
students must state related uses for the object. "You can ..... with a ....."
A very free speaking activity. Students choose a card and openly discuss
the topic using their own thoughts and direction. Model this as a whole
class and then try in groups.

Basic cards for getting students to respond to a piece of fictional or non-
fictional writing. Students choose a card and respond in writing or
speech.
Love or hate? A student chooses a card and states whether they "love"
or "hate" that thing and why. Other students can reply in affirmation or
disagreement.
Simple cards to practice prefixes and word knowledge. A student
chooses a card and others in the group brainstorm words beginning with
the prefix. 1 point per correct answer.
Simple cards to practice suffixes and word knowledge. A student
chooses a card and others in the group brainstorm words ending with
the suffix. 1 point per correct answer.
Simple cards with all the main irregular verbs of English. A student
chooses a card and must state the verb tenses "get - got - gotten"
and then an example sentence in the past tense. "I got hit today. "
Rhyming is a great way to get students developing advanced phonemic
awareness. A student chooses a card and states the word. Other
students brainstorm related words that rhyme. 1 point per word.

pet peeve - "I hate it when ...". Expressions included. Or students
discuss if it one of their own pet peeves.
Opposites. Low level. Cut up the cards and students use to state
and selct the opposites for each card. Great practice and contains
all the basic adjectives of English.
Compound Nouns. Cut up the cards. A student chooses one half of a
compound noun card and must match it with its other half. All the basic
compound nouns of English reviewed.
Resolution cards. Cut up. One student draws a card and must state
a resolution using the prompt. It may be true or false. Other students
vote on if it is true or false.

Opposites. High level. Cut up the cards and students use to state
and selct the opposites for each card. Great practice and contains
all the basic adjectives of English.

out the acronym. Other students must guess what it stands for.
Transportation cards. Cut up. A student chooses a card and must state
how they traveled to a place. "I traveled to (place) (means of
transportation).

Other students take turns guessing which animal it is.
Gossip cards. Students select a card and then state a piece of gossip
about a class member using the prompt. Lots of fun! Put on the board,
"gossip starters" to help students. Ex. "The word on the street is ..."
Permission cards. A student chooses a card and asks for permission
using the prompt on the card. The other students respond with yes or no.
News discussion cards. Question cards to use to start a discussion about
the news. Put students into small groups. One student chooses a card
and answers. Get students to ask follow up questions and debate.

How to use the cardss
1. Discuss the concept of "bucket list"
and elicit responses from students about
what is on their own list.
2. Cut up. Students turn the card up and
discuss. They ask each other - "Would
you put this on your bucket list - ....?"
Students reply Yes or No.

Cards
There are many ways to use these cards.
1. Put cards into the center of a group. A student selects a card and must describe the animal.

2. Make duplicate sets. Each student has an animal card. They walk around the class describing their
animal and try to find their match. Find a match - sit down.

4. Charades. A student must act out the animal. Most correct animals in 3 minutes wins.

PAPER
Pass the paper is an easy game to play.
1. Choose a piece of music. Something upbeat and happy.
2. Divide students into groups of 3 to 6.
3. Give one piece of paper to each group. Ask them to crumple up the piece of paper.
4. Give a set of cut up cards to each group. Lay them in a pile, face down.
5. Play the music. Ask the students to pass the paper while the music is playing. When the
music stops, they must stop passing the paper.
6. Stop the music.
7. The student with the piece of paper when the music stops turns over a card and must
answer the question or finish the sentence.
8. Other students can ask follow up questions until the music starts again.
9. Play the music. Students pass the paper again.
10. Repeat.
