Education System in India
Problems in Education Sector of
India
 Lack of Infrastructure
o As per 2016 Annual Survey of Education Report
(ASER),
 95.2 % of schools are not yet compliant with the complete
set of RTE infrastructure indicators.
 3.5% schools in India had no toilet facility while only
68.7% schools had useable toilet facility.
 75.5% of the schools surveyed had library in 2016, a
decrease from 78.1% in 2014.
 Percentage of schools with separate girls toilet have
increased from 32.9% in 2010 to 61.9% in 2016.
 74.1% schools had drinking water facility and 64.5% of the
schools had playground
Curriculum issues
 Modern education in India is often criticized for being based
on rote learning rather than problem solving.
 The whole focus is on cramming information rather than
understanding it and analyzing it. It doesn’t instills
independent thinking. It promotes rat race. It fails to build
persona of students.
 Industry faces a problem to find suitable employee as
education provided is not suitable for directly working in
industry.
 Most of the schools students seemed to be spending majority
of their time in preparing for competitive exams rather than
learning or playing.
 Almost 99% of pre-schools do not have any curriculum at all
 Indian Education System fails to create Entrepreneurial
mindset.
 It doesn’t makes you employable. No skills training.
Issues related to Teachers
 In the current system of education, there is a shortage of
opportunities for creativity for lecturers. Excessive use of
textbooks and external examinations, to the exclusion of the
method of education, is partially liable for this.
 Entire generations of teachers haven’t noted any other
system and changes within the present system will meet with
resistance.
 In the Indian education system, a teacher’s success is based
on the years of teaching experience, both of which do not
necessarily correlate to a teacher’s skill set or competencies.
 Teachers' training remains one of the most chaotic, neglected
and deficient sectors of India's vast education system.
 There is great deficiency in number as well as in the of quality
teachers in India.
 Teachers are not paid well
Other issues
 Medium of language of Education
 Grade Inflation
 Costly higher Education
 Gender Issues
 Inadequate Government funding
 Sports neglected
 Vocational courses neglected
 Corruption
Solutions to the Problems of
Education Sector in India
- Deepak Doddamani
Lack of Infrastructure
 Government Should
 Increase the funds in budget
allocation on Education sector
(currently it is 2.6% of GDP)
 Audit and restructure existing
facilities. Renovate old schools,
acquire training facilities, build labs,
libraries, toilets, water tanks etc.
 Use Public Private Partnership, NGO
Partnership to achieve this.
Lack of Funds
 The World Bank is granting fund to promote
literacy in India as well as for improving the
conditions of education system. It is very
important to use this fund transparently as
well as correctly.
 Over the financial year 2016-17, the central
government allocated Rs 43,554 crores to
school education and literacy, and Rs
28,840 crores to higher education.
 Encourage CSR in Education sector
Lack of effective policies
 The government has to take some strong
step to remove policies that discriminate
between sections of the society. On the
same side they have to put more effort to
bring out some effective policies so that
they can improve the situation of Indian
education system.
 Govt. should give complete autonomy to
institutes which are doing great job from
several decades.
 Educational policy need frequent update.
Lack of Ethics and
Transparency
 The level of corruption in education
ministries and regulatory bodies needs
to be taken seriously and tackled.
 The level of exam malpractices needs
to be curbed by a joint effort of the
government and examination
regulatory bodies.
 People with high ethical standards
and right attitude should be recruited
Lack of Quality in Teaching
 Training of teachers to target areas of
learning that can be worked on, computer-
aided teaching and technology led learning
has to be there.
 Government need to facilitate this method
by bringing about rules for continuous
teacher quality upgradation system.
 Teachers should not be burdened with
administrative works, election work etc.
 Recruitment, Training, Promotions,
Incentive structure etc. should be
centralized.
Lack of relevant Curriculum
 Curriculums should be reviewed and
encouraged. Practical Industry-linked
curriculum should be encouraged.
 Options for Subjects should be
encouraged from Secondary School
level
 Independent thinking, creativity,
entrepreneurial spirit, skills development,
vocational training, effective use of
technology etc. should be encouraged.
 Focus on Value education, Personality
Development, Sports, Curricular
activities
Lack of Affordable Education
 Fees of Private Schools, Coaching
Classes, Professional Courses etc.
should be regulated by creating proper
guidelines.
 Inclusive Education System should be
created. Education should bring Social
Equity – in gender, castes, financial
status.
 Education Mafias and Politicians
should be discouraged from making
Lack of Competitiveness
 Innovation and research in Education
System in necessary to make it more
relevant and upgraded.
 Academicians, Scholars,
Educationalists should be encouraged
to join Policy Making boards of
Government
 More IITs, IIMs type institutions
should be build in future.
 Students Exchange Programs should
be promoted.
Thank you
