6. QM’s decision is final and binding
After world war I ended, the 20s saw some real activity in the realm of
modern fashion as a wave of prosperity and optimism swept through the US
and women began entering the work force. It was at this time Coco Chanel
during a trip to Venice came across wide-legged trousers and reinvented
them as X.
Rejecting the traditional restrictive perspective on women's wear, she made
the comfortable loose slacks a high fashion statement. The concept was born
out of the practicality of the pants in easily alighting gondolas.
These are long trousers, extremely wide leg that flares out from the waist
popular majorly in the summer season.
The pants became a fashion staple in the 30s for Hollywood actresses like
Greta Garbo and later Katharine Hepburn with revivals in the 60s and around
2013.
ID X
Q1
Palazzos
Origin of what convention ?
Historically, men always dressed themselves, and they were right-
handed, so it was just a matter of practicality. However, as women wore
more elaborate clothes they always had maids to help them get dressed.
Clothiers soon realized that it would become more practical for women if
the convention was reversed for women.
Many companies still follow this convention.
Q2
Buttons on the left side of the shirt
X is a global fashion brand based in Italy with a considerable presence in India. The
name of the company comes from the family name of its founder. However, how
we better know it today is because of a marketing campaign for the company in
1982 by Oliviero Toscani.
Under Toscani's direction, ads were created that contained striking images
unrelated to any actual products being sold by the company. These include a
deathbed scene of a man dying from AIDS, a black stallion covering a white
mare, close-up pictures of tattoos reading "HIV Positive" on the bodies of men and
women, a cemetery of many cross-like tombstones, a priest and nun about to
engage in a romantic kiss, an electric chair, an advert showing a boy with hair
shaped into the devil's horns and three different hearts with "black“, "white" and
"yellow" written onto them.
In 2011, the company launched a worldwide campaign to combat the ‘Culture of
Hatred’ and created UNHATE Foundation. Under this campaign an advertisement
was released showing Barack Obama kissing Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela.
ID the company.

The Mondrian Collection was designed by French fashion designer X in
1965. This collection was a homage to the work of several modernistic
artists. Part of this collection were six cocktail dresses that were inspired by
the paintings of Mondrian. Because these six dresses played a major role in
this collection the collection is called the Mondrian Collection.
The Mondrian collection was widely published in many fashion magazines,
with one dress featuring on the cover of Vogue in 1965. Mondrian style
dresses became very popular, with many mass manufacturers producing
copies of the designs for lower prices, which were then widely circulated.
Give me the designer X and the inspiration.

The costume designer for this 1977 film, Ruth Morley, was interviewed by
vogue magazine where she expressed her shock at the widespread imitation of
the look, ‘Now people tell me that all the girls in London and Paris are turned
out like _____ ____. It’s crazy; it’s practically become a household word!’
The _____ ____ look became a tremendous fashion craze following the release of

appropriation of “menswear” (bowler hats, coats and blazers, baggy pants, and
neckties).

A woman’s footwear without a back strap is a X, the Delhi High Court has
ruled opposing the government’s contention that it was a Y. The issue
assumed significance as the export of X attract a 10 per cent customs duty
drawback, while that of ‘Y’ attracted only five per cent duty. The government
had withdrawn a 10 per cent duty drawback given to a footwear manufacturer
saying the footwear exported by it were ‘Y’ as these did not have back strap.
The Delhi High Court, while ruling that these were X, quashed the
government’s decision. Disagreeing with the government’s view, a bench of
justices S Ravindra Bhat and Najmi Waziri ruled, “The respondents (Centre and
the Revenue Department), in our opinion, acted upon prejudice and a
preconceived notion that ladies X cannot be without a back strap”.
Give X and Y.(Order is Important)
Q10

Y-Chappal
One of the most iconic pieces of fashion history is certainly not a pretty sight.
Considered to be too upsetting for public display, it is currently sealed in a
climate-controlled vault of the national archives in Washington dc where it will
be kept hidden till 2103. The suit is often said to be Chanel, but the truth is
that it was an authorised copy of a Chanel design, signed off in Paris but made
for her at the Park Avenue salon of Chez Ninon. This was a strategy employed
by ______ _______ to circumvent public disapproval of her disloyal taste for
European style, without compromising her own wardrobe.
What is the above paragraph all about which gained attention again in
December 2016 due to the release of a film.
Q11

The MA-1 jacket was designed by the United States Air Force as an
intermediate weight flight jacket. With the advancement of jet technology,
the jets could fly at much higher altitudes and in much colder temperatures.
Thus, there was a need for a much lighter jacket than the leather ones which
were in use earlier and also required them to be water proof.
These jackets became popular in the late 1970s
with punks, mods and skinheads. During the 1980s the jackets had extensive
exposure in style magazines such as The Face and i-D, often reimagined by
clothes designers of the time.
How do we better know this jacket which most of us would have used/use?
Q12

Fleece symbol is adopted as the company’s trademark. The logo, a

Philip the Good chose the emblem for his Order Of The Golden Fleece.
Later, wool merchants in Europe adopted the symbol as a way of

to popularity in the 1800s thanks to its contributions to the military. In
the 1920s they created a distinct design which was sewn within the
lining of their popular coats. There are several different variations of the
design, the most popular is recognized by its tan or cream colour, black
and white, with a bit of red.
The design was earlier used only for the inner linings of the products.
However, with the rise in popularity and demand, the design is till date
used on the outside for almost all kinds of products made by this
company ranging form garments to handbags and wallets.

  • 3. After world war I ended, the 20s saw some real activity in the realm of modern fashion as a wave of prosperity and optimism swept through the US and women began entering the work force. It was at this time Coco Chanel during a trip to Venice came across wide-legged trousers and reinvented them as X. Rejecting the traditional restrictive perspective on women's wear, she made the comfortable loose slacks a high fashion statement. The concept was born out of the practicality of the pants in easily alighting gondolas. These are long trousers, extremely wide leg that flares out from the waist popular majorly in the summer season. The pants became a fashion staple in the 30s for Hollywood actresses like Greta Garbo and later Katharine Hepburn with revivals in the 60s and around 2013. ID X Q1

  • 6. Origin of what convention ? Historically, men always dressed themselves, and they were right- handed, so it was just a matter of practicality. However, as women wore more elaborate clothes they always had maids to help them get dressed. Clothiers soon realized that it would become more practical for women if the convention was reversed for women. Many companies still follow this convention. Q2

  • 9. X is a global fashion brand based in Italy with a considerable presence in India. The name of the company comes from the family name of its founder. However, how we better know it today is because of a marketing campaign for the company in 1982 by Oliviero Toscani. Under Toscani's direction, ads were created that contained striking images unrelated to any actual products being sold by the company. These include a deathbed scene of a man dying from AIDS, a black stallion covering a white mare, close-up pictures of tattoos reading "HIV Positive" on the bodies of men and women, a cemetery of many cross-like tombstones, a priest and nun about to engage in a romantic kiss, an electric chair, an advert showing a boy with hair shaped into the devil's horns and three different hearts with "black“, "white" and "yellow" written onto them. In 2011, the company launched a worldwide campaign to combat the ‘Culture of Hatred’ and created UNHATE Foundation. Under this campaign an advertisement was released showing Barack Obama kissing Hugo Chávez, President of Venezuela. ID the company. Q3

The issue assumed significance as the export of X attract a 10 per cent customs duty drawback, while that of ‘Y’ attracted only five per cent duty. The government had withdrawn a 10 per cent duty drawback given to a footwear manufacturer saying the footwear exported by it were ‘Y’ as these did not have back strap. The Delhi High Court, while ruling that these were X, quashed the government’s decision.
