Growth Cycle of the Hair
The 3 stages of the hair growth cycle are:
1. ANAGEN
2. CATAGEN
3.TELOGEN

2. Source:growth
Anagen
•The growing stage (approx 90% of hair)
•Lasts 2 – 6 years
•Mitosis is occurring (new cells being formed)
•Hair grows between 1 and 1.5cm per month
•Hair bulb is rounded and full and contains melanin

3. Source:growth
Catagen
•The transition stage (approx 1-2% of hair)
•Lasts 1 – 2 weeks
•Mitosis stops
•Germinal matrix shrinks away from papilla

4. Source:growth
Telogen
• The resting stage (approx 8-9% of hair )
• Lasts 3 – 4 months
• follicle has shrunk away from papilla
• hair falls out – approx 50 – 80 hairs per day are lost

5. The following factors create an interruption of the normal cycle causing excessive
hair loss:
•Change in diet
•Drugs
•Stress
•Illness
•Post Pregnancy
