Essay on Virginia Tech Shooting
How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don't really think
too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had
taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town
of Blacksburg Virginia, a college student who attended Virginia Tech, opened gunfire to his fellow
classmates. This shooting has been considered to be the biggest massacre in all of American history.
There are many things to be discussed in this major tragedy. Some of them include the events leading
up to the shooting, the timeline that the shootings occurred, the causes, and the significance in this
particular shooting. The Virginia Tech is only...show more content...
It wasn't long before Roy had noticed that Cho seemed to have some issues and suggested him to
go to the counseling center. Roy claimed that she had tried to explain to the board and faculty
members that there was a serious problem with Cho; however, nobody took notice to anything
she was saying. Next, On April 16, 2007, Cho Seung Hui, a student at Virginia Tech College,
apparently had nowhere else to turn in his life other than to go on a massive killing spree.
According to CNN News, a timeline of exactly what happened during the massacre was explained.
It all began at 7:15am in the West Ambler Johnston Hall, which houses close to 900 students, a 911
call was made claiming that two students had been shot. Between the hours of 7:30am and 9am
police and school board members discussed who on earth would possibly do something like this.
Shortly after the school began to send students notices via email to notify them of the shootings.
Around 9:45am another 911 call was made claiming that more shootings had taken place in the
Norris Hall and this time 31 students were killed including Cho, who shot himself after going on the
viscous rampage. Several messages were sent to the students of Virginia Tech notifying them of the
second shootings via email. Shortly after noon the president of the college released information that

Virginia Tech Personal Statement
Virginia Tech's 'hands–on, minds–on' approach exemplifies my philosophy: to "invent the future"
using individual voices that work cohesively. As an Indian–American, I straddle the divide between
two different but inspiring cultures: I flip between English and Hindi, between shaking hands firmly
and touching elders' feet, and selecting fast–food or chicken–tandoori. My dual heritage inspires me
to be an active listener and learner who will bring a rich blend of my Indo–American values to a
diverse institution.
Once at Virginia Tech, my tour guide, Zach, spoke with immense passion and epitomized his
university as a technological powerhouse. Having already taken AP computer Science, I have
learned fundamentals of Java, data structures, algorithms,

Virginia Tech Security Analysis
With large–scale information leaks and system hacks of major companies and industry titans being
more heavily covered by the media and drawing public scrutiny, emphasis has been placed on the
need for tighter digital and physical security. Some organizations, such as Virginia Tech, have turned
to stricter requirements on password protection or dual–authentication in order to provide more
security. As the standards for password and item based security, such as Identification Cards or
personal phone acceptance, have become more advanced, so to have the systems and techniques of
hackers attempting to tamper or steal that information. Virginia Tech has always strived to be a
shining beacon for technological advancement and it is this that leads us to believe that it is time to
follow the global trend of adopting more secure Biometric scanning systems in order to properly
secure sensitive information and physical access across campus.
Biometric security is far more secure than the typical...show more content...
It can cost a company up to $10,000 to apply biometrics to a single door. However, if security is a
top concern for a company, this may be a worthy investment. A one–time fee of $10,000 security fee
to implement this technology might be more worth it to a company than risking the theft or
tampering of less secure critical assets or information. For example, biometric recognition has
already been implemented at Virginia Tech's data center. The employee has to enter a passcode and
provide a fingerprint to access the door to the center. Behind the door over hundreds of thousands of
dollars' worth of equipment and sensitive information is secured, therefore Virginia Tech made the
decision to spend more money up front on security rather than risk the loss that would result in the

Virginia Tech's Future Study
Since its opening in 1901, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant has played an integral part in
producing electricity for the university and the greater Blacksburg area; however, over the past 113
years, the plant has shifted its primary focus from producing electricity to producing steam and hot
water for the university. The plant, which uses a mixture of fuels including coal and natural gas, is
classified as a "cogeneration" or "combined heat and power" plant. Simply put, this means the
facility produces both electricity and steam/heat. Virginia Tech is one of the few universities in the
commonwealth that helps to serve the electrical needs of its surrounding community; moreover, it is
the only university that supplies the community via a...show more content...
This was just nine short years after Thomas Edison established the first power plant in the United
States, the Pearl Street Station in New York City ("Pearl Street Station"). Although Virginia Tech's
electric plant was the first collegiate electric plant in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is now
joined by over 100 coal–fired boilers on 60+ college campuses nationwide. The Morgantown Energy
Facility, located just 1/4th of a mile from the West Virginia University, is one of the only other
coal–fired cogeneration in the United States. The plant uses bituminous coal and waste coal as its
primary fuel sources, and is able to output 68.9 MW of electricity. Comparatively, the Virginia
Tech plant, which focuses on steam production more than the Morgantown plant, is only able to
reach 6.5 MW at peak capacity. What the Central Steam Plant lacks in electrical output, it makes
up for in its strict emissions standards. In 2006, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant recorded
emissions equivalent to roughly 285,000 tons of CO2 and an extremely low 90 tons of SO2. The
West Virginia facility, on the other hand, reported over 650,000 tons of CO2 emissions and 850
tons of SO2 emissions. The WVU plant uses much more coal than the VT plant, which leads to
higher levels of CO2 and SO2 emissions. The baghouses and scrubbers on two of the Virginia Tech

Essay On Why I Chose Virginia Tech
I chose Virginia Tech for a few reasons which included The College of Natural Resources and
Environment, the Appalachian Mountains, and being known as Hokie. The college of Natural
Resources and Environment is nationally ranked and known worldwide for their academics and
field studies. Virginia Tech was one of the few colleges in the area that offered Wildlife
Conservation as a major and I was set on my major since freshman year of high school. My cousin,
Mark Jones, who is the head biologist of the Black Bear population for the East Coast attended Tech
and I am striving to follow in his footsteps. I enjoy how the programs is hands on and competitive to
all students in the program. I am alongside of students, graduated and not graduated, who...show

The support around the university is phenomenal and has made the adjustment easier. The
atmosphere of the school is unbelievable and still surprises me today with all it can offer. I am
part of the biggest freshman class Virginia Tech as ever had and I am truly honored to be part of
something so monumental. I am overwhelmed with the fact I get to call Virginia Tech my home
for the next four years and truly make a difference around campus. My academic goals for the
next four years are to make the dean's list and keep at least a 3.5 GPA. I hope to succeed above
and beyond in all my classes and stand out. My career goals are to work with Black Bears as a
Wildlife Biologist or possibly a game warden, I hope to soon find the right path for my upcoming
future. I aim to maybe add a minor in the upcoming year, however I am still debating. In the past, I
was an active member in various organization and clubs like Future Farmers of America, DECA,
Future Business Leaders of America, Community Service, and National Honor Society. I have
volunteered multiple hours around my community at basketball tournaments, food pantry's, blood
drives, and company

guarantee myself a stable life setting when I graduate from a university. My sole purpose of
attending college is to ensure that I can survive in the real world as a working class member, and
know that I can achieve. I feel that Virginia State University will bring out my confidence so I can
achieve my goal of getting a good job and a higher education. The fact that Virginia State University
is a historically black college, I feel confident to actually attend college in general. Graduating from
a class of only fifty–one students, it's easy to find similar traits in my peers that I can relate too,

Reasons For Attending Virginia Tech
There are a multitude of reasons I want to attend Virginia Tech, but being reduced to five, I would
have to choose the college atmosphere as my top reason. I would love to participate in and enjoy
Virginia Tech's massive football games that are full of life and excitement. The school spirit would
truly enhance my experience around the campus and in my social life as well. The second reason
is because I want to major in an engineering field, and Virginia Tech is a stellar school for this
aspiration. The college's prestigious ranking in engineering fields is more than enough to convince
me to attend. Another reason I want to attend Virginia Tech is because it is my ambition to
genuinely love my career path, and I think Virginia Tech is an ideal

Virginia Tech Expectations
Growing up in a household of six, there is a lot of competition, especially when you are the
middle child. My mother always says,"Focus on your education. Education is the one thing that
no one can take away. Take control of your life." This is what I'm doing now, I'm taking control of
the opportunities I am given. I am a highley eligable candidate because of my wonder for new
knowledge and my drive for more. Being an agressive and competitive athlete, I am easily excited
by challenging things that I face everyday, that's why I love the challenges that come with my school
curriculum. It makes you think, and I'm a thinker. I already have one college that I really want to go
to, but it is in Virgina and out of state tuition is a lot. I am planning on getting a ph.d in Data
analytics at Virginia Polyetich institute of technology, also known as Virginia tech. I have a teacher
that has a degree in engineering and she said that they're program is an excellent one, and that is
what I am initially looking for. With my degree, I would like to help not change, but re–mold the
world into something our ancestors never thought to even imagine.

Georgia Tech Application Essay Sample
Growing up in a small town in the corner of Northwest Georgia taught me many things. It taught me
a distinctive vocabulary showcasing words such as "cattywampus" and phrases like "well butter my
butt and call me a biscuit." I also learned the importance of manors and of course, the notorious
southern hospitality. However, growing up in a small city in the south also taught me about the
tangible impact that of discrimination and privilege. It taught me about lack of funding for public
education and underachieving student bodies. But most importantly, it inspired me to serve. Without

When I first arrived, I thought the unique slant that their liberal arts classes would be interesting
and unique. Maybe I would fall in love with science and technology find my perfect fit. However,
my hopes were not met. The technology slant placed on everything, while different from most
liberal arts classes, often catered to engineers, leaving out those who would like a more concrete
knowledge of the subject. This emphasis placed on STEM fields creates an environment perfect
for intellectual growth and discussion for many, but my passions cannot be explored here like they
could be elsewhere. The major that I always wanted to study, political science, is not offered at
Tech, so I settled for what I thought was closest. However, I now realize that I cannot settle and be
truly happy.
Between the D1 sports, location, and world class academics, it is a dream institution for many, but
the thing that makes Georgia Tech special is the reason that I would be best fit at another university.
Everyone is so passionate about engineering, math or science, that they live in a world fully

Argumentative Essay On Virginia Tech
The life event that was chosen was a sad, awful tragedy that struck the Northern Virginia
Community as well as the rest of the world. In 2007, a 5th year student named Cho entered
Virginia Tech with multiple weapons. He decided to shoot and attack 30 students and faculty
members. Finally, ending his life before the police had the chance to intervene. Cho also sent a

Why do you wish to undertake graduate work at Virginia Tech?
I completed my undergraduate degree and feel strongly about the academic relevance and ability of
the university. The university offers real world skills that allowed me to immediately become
employed and productive upon graduation. I want to attend Virginia Tech for my Masters in
Information Technology ,with a focus in security, because the program is well renowned nationwide
and I can attend remotely while I continue to work full time at Fidelity Investments in Raleigh, North
Carolina.
What makes you a good candidate for admission?
Virginia Tech is a demandinguniversity that has high expectations of its students. While VT was a
challenge, upon graduation I gained employment with Fidelity's global security organization and am
in the company's top 20% performance level after my first full year with them. In speaking with my
management, Fidelity agreed to support me academically and financially towards a master's degree

What duty does a college or university owe its students?
The duty of care is owed to every college and/or university student. Duty of care is the obligation
to use a reasonable level of care towards an individual to avoid harm to that individual. Duty of
care is therefore based upon the relationship of the parties, the negligent act or omission and the
reasonable foreseeability of loss to that individual. A negligent act results in loss for the victim. Not
notifying your campus community in a timely manner is and negligent act and can be considered as
being in breach of duty of care.

We Are Virginia Tech Poem Summary
Poems are centerpieces for human emotions. They can feature an array of passions ranging from
bright and peaceful to angry and sad. Somberness is not very alluring to most people, but to those
who have been through a traumatic event such as a school shooting, poems that begin in sorrow
and conclude with hope are most fitting. These poems are sometimes used inside obituaries to
help restore peace to a broken family. One poet whose poem heals people is Nikki Giovanni. In her,
"We are Virginia Tech," she addresses a crowd who has fallen victim to a tragedy. The facts that
poetry is therapeutic in times of stress, its cadence affect emotions, and that it is inspirational during
times of loss, proves "the healing effect" that Giovanni believes is prevalent in poetry....show more

Giovanni believes that poetry "balances" an empathetic void prevalent in American society. She
claims, "(America) is a quick nation," and that, "Your mother can die, and someone can say, 'you
really need to move on.'" She combats this in her poem as she says, "We are not moving on, we are
embracing our mourning." This statement expresses what the grief–stricken audience feels, but is
too afraid to say. It eases the burden when they know that someone else understands the pain they
are going through and that it is difficult to move on. Giovanni perceives her listeners as tough,
courageous, and resilient. She proudly proclaims, "We are strong, and brave, and innocent, and
unafraid," with a more hyper and secure tone than used before. She shows that poetry unites people
by emphasizing their strength in numbers. For instance, Nikki Giovanni constantly accentuates a
combination of action and unity words such as "we will" and "we are" that proves that the victims
have her and each other who will help them rebuild their lives. She then instills in her crowd a
victorious plea that will help them heal when she concludes, "We will prevail, we are Virginia

"We Are Virginia Tech" Speaking is form of art that can either be a natural gift or a practiced
talent. Much like there are several different ways a person can draw: cartooning, free hand, or
realistic, there are many ways in which a person can speak. Nikki Giovanni's speech "We Are
Virginia Tech" makes people cry, rejoice, and move on. A speech is one form of art that can
evoke these types of emotions from people. In Nikki Giovanni's poem "We Are Virginia Tech,"
which was spoken at a memorial ceremony for Virginia Tech shooting victims, she uses her tone
and a repetition of words to make her speech very powerful. The tone of her voice is very distinct,
she speaks with poise and confidence, while remaining remorseful but positive...show more content...
People in the audience who lost close loved ones in this disaster may not think the other worldly
tragedies Giovanni describes are of the same magnitude as this. For others though these images
she gives may help them connect with the loss some are experiencing. Speeches can affect people
in different ways, some speeches will inspire you, others will make you reflect on your own life,
some will teach you a life lesson, but Nikki Giovanni's poem was meant to bring together a group
of disheartened people. Giovanni's speech did not affect me as intensely as it did to the families
of the victims who actually saw her give the speech. Similar to whether you are seeing a photo of
a piece of artwork or seeing it in person, seeing or hearing a recording of a speech it will affect you
differently. Sontag says, "real art has the capacity to make us nervous" (Sontag 759). This speech
is meant to bring out the sadness, but also the hope for a better future that people are feeling.
Preston Risser said, "her poem brought out the hurt people were feeling and brought awareness to
the situation at hand." As seen in the video people are either crying after she is finished, or
standing up with a newfound inspiration to stand tall and put this tragedy in the past. The way a
piece of art might make you feel does not have to be displayed by some physical expression, it can
be an emotion that is kept inside. In relation to how Nikki

Since there are several factors related to the etiology of this and other mass shootings, an
organizational system could be useful to determine each factor's impact. The Bronfenbrenner
Ecological Systems Theory can be applied to this situation very easily. Basically, this system
describes the impact that each of the five environmental systems (micro, meso, exo, macro, and
chrono) has on the individual. In the case of the Virginia Tech shooting, the micro and macro
systems most directly apply (Bronfenbrenner, 1994). The strongest influences in this event lie within

But when the effect of social and opportunity structures on the individual must be investigated, the
macrosystem can be very useful. In the Virginia Tech case, the principal macrosystem level factor
is access to guns. "Studies have shown that homicide rates among youth have significantly
increased since 1985, which has been attributed to an increase in the availability of firearms to
young people." In the aftermath of this event, the first major federal gun control policy was
implemented, requiring the submission of the names to an FBI database of all people declared
mentally ill by a court. These people would then be prohibited from purchasing firearms. If such a
measure had been in place before the Virginia Tech shooting, Cho likely would have been prevented
from purchasing guns (Hong, Sung, Cho, Shiulain,

Virginia Tech Application Essay

  • 1. Essay on Virginia Tech Shooting How safe do you feel when you attend school everyday? Many students and faculty don't really think too much about school being a dangerous place; however, after a couple of school shootings had taken place their minds and thoughts may have changed completely. On April 16, 2007, in the town of Blacksburg Virginia, a college student who attended Virginia Tech, opened gunfire to his fellow classmates. This shooting has been considered to be the biggest massacre in all of American history. There are many things to be discussed in this major tragedy. Some of them include the events leading up to the shooting, the timeline that the shootings occurred, the causes, and the significance in this particular shooting. The Virginia Tech is only...show more content... It wasn't long before Roy had noticed that Cho seemed to have some issues and suggested him to go to the counseling center. Roy claimed that she had tried to explain to the board and faculty members that there was a serious problem with Cho; however, nobody took notice to anything she was saying. Next, On April 16, 2007, Cho Seung Hui, a student at Virginia Tech College, apparently had nowhere else to turn in his life other than to go on a massive killing spree. According to CNN News, a timeline of exactly what happened during the massacre was explained. It all began at 7:15am in the West Ambler Johnston Hall, which houses close to 900 students, a 911 call was made claiming that two students had been shot. Between the hours of 7:30am and 9am police and school board members discussed who on earth would possibly do something like this. Shortly after the school began to send students notices via email to notify them of the shootings. Around 9:45am another 911 call was made claiming that more shootings had taken place in the Norris Hall and this time 31 students were killed including Cho, who shot himself after going on the viscous rampage. Several messages were sent to the students of Virginia Tech notifying them of the second shootings via email. Shortly after noon the president of the college released information that classes Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Virginia Tech Personal Statement Virginia Tech's 'hands–on, minds–on' approach exemplifies my philosophy: to "invent the future" using individual voices that work cohesively. As an Indian–American, I straddle the divide between two different but inspiring cultures: I flip between English and Hindi, between shaking hands firmly and touching elders' feet, and selecting fast–food or chicken–tandoori. My dual heritage inspires me to be an active listener and learner who will bring a rich blend of my Indo–American values to a diverse institution. Once at Virginia Tech, my tour guide, Zach, spoke with immense passion and epitomized his university as a technological powerhouse. Having already taken AP computer Science, I have learned fundamentals of Java, data structures, algorithms, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Virginia Tech Security Analysis With large–scale information leaks and system hacks of major companies and industry titans being more heavily covered by the media and drawing public scrutiny, emphasis has been placed on the need for tighter digital and physical security. Some organizations, such as Virginia Tech, have turned to stricter requirements on password protection or dual–authentication in order to provide more security. As the standards for password and item based security, such as Identification Cards or personal phone acceptance, have become more advanced, so to have the systems and techniques of hackers attempting to tamper or steal that information. Virginia Tech has always strived to be a shining beacon for technological advancement and it is this that leads us to believe that it is time to follow the global trend of adopting more secure Biometric scanning systems in order to properly secure sensitive information and physical access across campus. Biometric security is far more secure than the typical...show more content... It can cost a company up to $10,000 to apply biometrics to a single door. However, if security is a top concern for a company, this may be a worthy investment. A one–time fee of $10,000 security fee to implement this technology might be more worth it to a company than risking the theft or tampering of less secure critical assets or information. For example, biometric recognition has already been implemented at Virginia Tech's data center. The employee has to enter a passcode and provide a fingerprint to access the door to the center. Behind the door over hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and sensitive information is secured, therefore Virginia Tech made the decision to spend more money up front on security rather than risk the loss that would result in the event of a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Virginia Tech's Future Study Since its opening in 1901, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant has played an integral part in producing electricity for the university and the greater Blacksburg area; however, over the past 113 years, the plant has shifted its primary focus from producing electricity to producing steam and hot water for the university. The plant, which uses a mixture of fuels including coal and natural gas, is classified as a "cogeneration" or "combined heat and power" plant. Simply put, this means the facility produces both electricity and steam/heat. Virginia Tech is one of the few universities in the commonwealth that helps to serve the electrical needs of its surrounding community; moreover, it is the only university that supplies the community via a...show more content... This was just nine short years after Thomas Edison established the first power plant in the United States, the Pearl Street Station in New York City ("Pearl Street Station"). Although Virginia Tech's electric plant was the first collegiate electric plant in the Commonwealth of Virginia, it is now joined by over 100 coal–fired boilers on 60+ college campuses nationwide. The Morgantown Energy Facility, located just 1/4th of a mile from the West Virginia University, is one of the only other coal–fired cogeneration in the United States. The plant uses bituminous coal and waste coal as its primary fuel sources, and is able to output 68.9 MW of electricity. Comparatively, the Virginia Tech plant, which focuses on steam production more than the Morgantown plant, is only able to reach 6.5 MW at peak capacity. What the Central Steam Plant lacks in electrical output, it makes up for in its strict emissions standards. In 2006, the Virginia Tech Central Steam Plant recorded emissions equivalent to roughly 285,000 tons of CO2 and an extremely low 90 tons of SO2. The West Virginia facility, on the other hand, reported over 650,000 tons of CO2 emissions and 850 tons of SO2 emissions. The WVU plant uses much more coal than the VT plant, which leads to higher levels of CO2 and SO2 emissions. • 5. Essay On Why I Chose Virginia Tech I chose Virginia Tech for a few reasons which included The College of Natural Resources and Environment, the Appalachian Mountains, and being known as Hokie. The college of Natural Resources and Environment is nationally ranked and known worldwide for their academics and field studies. Virginia Tech was one of the few colleges in the area that offered Wildlife Conservation as a major and I was set on my major since freshman year of high school. My cousin, Mark Jones, who is the head biologist of the Black Bear population for the East Coast attended Tech and I am striving to follow in his footsteps. I am overwhelmed with the fact I get to call Virginia Tech my home for the next four years and truly make a difference around campus. My academic goals for the next four years are to make the dean's list and keep at least a 3.5 GPA. I hope to succeed above and beyond in all my classes and stand out. My career goals are to work with Black Bears as a Wildlife Biologist or possibly a game warden, I hope to soon find the right path for my upcoming future. I aim to maybe add a minor in the upcoming year, however I am still debating. My sole purpose of attending college is to ensure that I can survive in the real world as a working class member, and know that I can achieve. I feel that Virginia State University will bring out my confidence so I can achieve my goal of getting a good job and a higher education. The fact that Virginia State University is a historically black college, I feel confident to actually attend college in general. I would love to participate in and enjoy Virginia Tech's massive football games that are full of life and excitement. The school spirit would truly enhance my experience around the campus and in my social life as well. The second reason is because I want to major in an engineering field, and Virginia Tech is a stellar school for this aspiration. The college's prestigious ranking in engineering fields is more than enough to convince me to attend. Another reason I want to attend Virginia Tech is because it is my ambition to genuinely love my career path, and I think Virginia Tech is an ideal Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Education is the one thing that no one can take away. Take control of your life." This is what I'm doing now, I'm taking control of the opportunities I am given. I am a highley eligable candidate because of my wonder for new knowledge and my drive for more. Being an agressive and competitive athlete, I am easily excited by challenging things that I face everyday, that's why I love the challenges that come with my school curriculum. It makes you think, and I'm a thinker. I already have one college that I really want to go to, but it is in Virgina and out of state tuition is a lot. I am planning on getting a ph.d in Data analytics at Virginia Polyetich institute of technology, also known as Virginia tech. I have a teacher that has a degree in engineering and she said that they're program is an excellent one, and that is what I am initially looking for. With my degree, I would like to help not change, but re–mold the world into something our ancestors never thought to even imagine. Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It taught me a distinctive vocabulary showcasing words such as "cattywampus" and phrases like "well butter my butt and call me a biscuit." I also learned the importance of manors and of course, the notorious southern hospitality. However, growing up in a small city in the south also taught me about the tangible impact that of discrimination and privilege. This emphasis placed on STEM fields creates an environment perfect for intellectual growth and discussion for many, but my passions cannot be explored here like they could be elsewhere. The major that I always wanted to study, political science, is not offered at Tech, so I settled for what I thought was closest. However, I now realize that I cannot settle and be truly happy. Between the D1 sports, location, and world class academics, it is a dream institution for many, but the thing that makes Georgia Tech special is the reason that I would be best fit at another university. • 13. We Are Virginia Tech Poem Summary Poems are centerpieces for human emotions. They can feature an array of passions ranging from bright and peaceful to angry and sad. Somberness is not very alluring to most people, but to those who have been through a traumatic event such as a school shooting, poems that begin in sorrow and conclude with hope are most fitting. These poems are sometimes used inside obituaries to help restore peace to a broken family. One poet whose poem heals people is Nikki Giovanni. In her, "We are Virginia Tech," she addresses a crowd who has fallen victim to a tragedy. The facts that poetry is therapeutic in times of stress, its cadence affect emotions, and that it is inspirational during times of loss, proves "the healing effect" that Giovanni believes is prevalent in poetry....show more content... Giovanni believes that poetry "balances" an empathetic void prevalent in American society. She claims, "(America) is a quick nation," and that, "Your mother can die, and someone can say, 'you really need to move on.'" She combats this in her poem as she says, "We are not moving on, we are embracing our mourning." This statement expresses what the grief–stricken audience feels, but is too afraid to say. It eases the burden when they know that someone else understands the pain they are going through and that it is difficult to move on. Giovanni perceives her listeners as tough, courageous, and resilient. She proudly proclaims, "We are strong, and brave, and innocent, and unafraid," with a more hyper and secure tone than used before. She shows that poetry unites people by emphasizing their strength in numbers. For instance, Nikki Giovanni constantly accentuates a combination of action and unity words such as "we will" and "we are" that proves that the victims have her and each other who will help them rebuild their lives. She then instills in her crowd a victorious plea that will help them heal when she concludes, "We will prevail, we are Virginia Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Much like there are several different ways a person can draw: cartooning, free hand, or realistic, there are many ways in which a person can speak. Nikki Giovanni's speech "We Are Virginia Tech" makes people cry, rejoice, and move on. A speech is one form of art that can evoke these types of emotions from people. In Nikki Giovanni's poem "We Are Virginia Tech," which was spoken at a memorial ceremony for Virginia Tech shooting victims, she uses her tone and a repetition of words to make her speech very powerful. People in the audience who lost close loved ones in this disaster may not think the other worldly tragedies Giovanni describes are of the same magnitude as this. For others though these images she gives may help them connect with the loss some are experiencing. Speeches can affect people in different ways, some speeches will inspire you, others will make you reflect on your own life, some will teach you a life lesson, but Nikki Giovanni's poem was meant to bring together a group of disheartened people. Giovanni's speech did not affect me as intensely as it did to the families of the victims who actually saw her give the speech. Similar to whether you are seeing a photo of a piece of artwork or seeing it in person, seeing or hearing a recording of a speech it will affect you differently. Sontag says, "real art has the capacity to make us nervous" (Sontag 759). This speech is meant to bring out the sadness, but also the hope for a better future that people are feeling. Preston Risser said, "her poem brought out the hurt people were feeling and brought awareness to the situation at hand." As seen in the video people are either crying after she is finished, or standing up with a newfound inspiration to stand tall and put this tragedy in the past. The way a piece of art might make you feel does not have to be displayed by some physical expression, it can be an emotion that is kept inside. The Bronfenbrenner Ecological Systems Theory can be applied to this situation very easily. Basically, this system describes the impact that each of the five environmental systems (micro, meso, exo, macro, and chrono) has on the individual. In the case of the Virginia Tech shooting, the micro and macro systems most directly apply (Bronfenbrenner, 1994).
