- 6. A Little Detour… Children do not need a cell phone because it is a small school; we can always locate your child. Texting is the biggest problem. Get a cell phone with limited texting opportunities. Research your plan for the special cell phones for kids. If you do decide to give a child a cell phone…do not give it to a child as a reward. Give it to them as an emergency tool and reserve the right to look at the phone at any given time.
- 7. More detour… Children do not need a laptop Fifth graders need a working desktop computer located in the living room or any other place where people frequently pass Fifth graders need a working printer and possibly access to Internet with the enforced parental controls.

Life Skills Raise a Good Sport Teach to fail A certain amount of stress is okay, raise a resilient child by being positive and trying to find something good in every day Do not interfere in child’s disputes! Do not allow a child to whine and complain. Whining and complaining do not equate expressing one’s feelings. Teach “I feel that…”

- Why are life skills more important at this age?
- Chores should be something kids do not necessarily like; allowance should be given for work, but it needs to be BIG work, difficult enough to be considered work like washing a car…Pay for a difficult job or for something extra, regular chores are just their contribution to the family. They cannot live in the house for free. Allowance is a different topic. Independence and maturity are the key to a successful fifth grade. -> taking care of their own grade and studies
- Here is another very expensive toy, a laptop. We stress the use of the computers in the classroom -> parents buy laptops; laptop can be moved from room to room (bad thing for a child to have this choice)
- Sometimes parents thing that kids mature if you give them more adult things. For example, a cell phone.Parents say that now that the kids are big they reward them with a cell phone. Different service plans, please research. Cell phones come with guidelines. Not calling during the school hours unless the teacher asks them to call. They do not need a phone. Kids at this page do not need a PDA, Smartphones, iPhone, a phone with a keyboard. Definitely block the Internet service on the child’s phone. If you buy a phone that is not “cool”, does not have internet or games, you will see that your child will begin to forget it at home, which means that they do not really need it. Middle School is a better time to get a phone just because they school is bigger. But again, make sure there are guidelines.

- Kids are punished in fifth grade by lacking these skills, and fifth grade is a bad spot to start teaching it for the first time.
- Kids have no idea why they are doing what they are doing. Give them a big reason why. It should not be a gift or something that small. In fifth grade it should be something big and more abstract.Kids need to understand that there are expectations.
