3.  Cone-beam computed tomography
(CBCT) is an imaging modality that uses a
cone-shaped x-ray beam to reconstruct a
three-dimensional image of a solid object’s
internal structures. First introduced in the
United States in 2001, CBCT technology has
advanced significantly in the decade-plus
since, and more and more dentists and oral
surgeons have begun to use CBCT devices
in their offices.

4.  Recommended by the American Academy
of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists, CBCT
scanners have a wide range of clinical
applications because they give dentists a
detailed three-dimensional view of
components of the jaw and teeth, such as
root canals, fillings, nerves, and bone
structure. These images can then be used
to diagnose and plan a course of
treatment for a range of dental conditions.
