What is Motivation……?
 Motivation is a word used to explain behaviour. It
represents the reasons for people's actions, desires,
and needs. Motivation can also be defined as one's
direction to behaviour or what causes a person to want
to repeat a behaviour and vice versa …
 motivation n syn STIMULUS, catalyst, impetus,
impulse, incentive, incitation, incitement, instigation,
spur, stimulant
 .
Theories of Motivation
 Overview
 At a simple level, it seems obvious that people do
things, such as go to work, in order to get stuff they
want and to avoid stuff they don't want.
 Why exactly they want what they do and don't want
what they don't is still something a mystery. It's a black
box and it hasn't been fully penetrated.
The Three Parts Of Motivation..
 1. Activation.
 Persistence
 Intensity (Passion)
Types Of Motivation…..
 Leaving aside all the technical theories…
 Basically Motivation can classified as …
 1. Intrinsic
 &
 2. Extrinsic.
Intrinsic Motivation..16 basic
desires…..
 1.Acceptance 2.Curiosity. 3. Nourishment.
 4.Procreation. 5.Honor. 6.Idealism.
 7.Independence. 8.structure. 9.Physical activity.
 10. Power. 11. Romance. 12.Savings. 13.Social status.
 14.Tranquility. 15. Vengence.
“You can take a horse to the pond
but
cannot make it drink”
“Did you ever face questions”
 • “Why doesn't this person work?”
 • “Why does this colleague hate me?”
 • “Why do I always get bad people to work with?”
 • “Could someone be more ungrateful than him?”
 • “Why does this person want to embarrass me?”
Refusing to work is a problem or a
symptom?
 • Lack of interest in the job
 • Stubbornness
 • Excessive fear of punishments
 • Inappropriate recognition / rewards
 • Conflicting demands of the superiors
“Why My Horse Doesn’t Drink”
 Newton’s First Law of (Motivation) Motion
 Every body persists in its state of rest or uniform
motion in astraight - line, unless it is compelled to
change that state by force impressed on it.
 “Human beings too, do not change their state of
affairs
 unless a force is applied on them. People do not
take initiative or an action until they are
compelled to do so”.
 Newton’s Second Law of (Motivation) Motion
 The rate of change of momentum of a body is proportional
to the
 applied force and takes place in the direction in which the
force
 acts.
 “The mass (individual’s competence) remains constant, it
is the
 person’s desire/interest (the velocity) decides the extent of
his
 success. More the desire and interest towards a particular
job;
 better is his chance of success”.
Motivation and Need Satisfaction
Accelerator vs.. Brake
 “Motivation is like an accelerator in a vehicle. A
vehiclekeeps moving at the pace decided by its
accelerator.
 The moment accelerator is reduced, vehicle’s speed
 reduces and it may come to a standstill if there is no
 further acceleration. Alternatively, if brakes are
applied,
 there will be an abrupt reduction in the speed of the
 vehicle and it may come to a standstill….
Is it MOTIVATION
or
MANIPULATION???
"Leadership Is the art of getting
someone else to
do something you want done
because he wants to
do it."
General Dwight David
Eisenhower
How NOT to
De motivate
 Demotivators originating due to lack of proper
Supervision
 • Lack of Direction
 • Lack of Recognition
 • Subordinates may become high headed
 • People are expected to do good work
 “catch somebody doing things wrong.”
 Praise in public, reprimand in private.
 • Never offer a unfair reward or recognition
 “catch somebody doing things right”.
 De motivators originating due to inappropriate
Leadership
 • Unfulfilled Promises
 • Denying a promotion or a request transfer
 • Conflicting behaviors of superiors
 • Feeling of favoritism
 • Being a work-alcoholic
 • Asking people to do what you wouldn’t like to do your
self?
 • Frequent changes in Standard Operating Procedures
‘Criticizing’ an Art
“Appreciation can make a
day. Even change a life.
Your willingness to put it into
words is all that is necessary”.
Margaret Cousins
DIFFERENT STROKES FOR
DIFFERENT FOLKS
 • ‘Guptapragya’ means those who have
undiscovered talent
 • ‘Suptapragya’ means those who are talented but
NO action
 • ‘Truptpragya’ means those who are contented
 • ‘Luptpragya’ means those who have lost interest
 • ‘Pradiptapragya’ means those who are sharp and
dashing
Motivation Secrets……
 “The greatest motivational
act one person can do for
another is to listen”.
Don't
compare
yourself with
any one in
this world.
If you compare,
you are insulting
yourself.
No one will
manufacture a
lock without a
key.
Similarly God won't
give problems
without solutions.
Life laughs at
you when you are
unhappy...
Life smiles at you when
you are happy...
Life salutes you when
you make others happy...
Every successful person has
a painful story.
Every painful story has a
successful ending.
Accept the pain and
get ready for success.
Be bold when you loose
and be calm when you
win.
Heated gold becomes
ornament. Beaten copper
becomes wires. Depleted
stone becomes statue. So the
more pain you get in life you
become more valuable.
JADA ‘08
Conclusions…..
 Without motivation you will not achieve anything.
 Motivation is the spark that gets you started and keeps
you going.
 It’s the basic nature of Human beings to keep on
striving to do better.
 Once we master the secrets of motivation…we will
realize our goals, we will earn our success….
