Partnership
- Healthcare delivery model that integrates
legal assistance into patient care to improve
health and wellbeing of vulnerable
individuals, children and families
Method
Literature review on MLP delivery,
effectiveness and quality in order to
generate questions for the key informants on
the delivery and measurement of MLPs in
the state
Conduct site visits- Salud Medical Clinic,
Colorado Legal Services, Colorado
Children's Hospital, Colorado Refugee
Wellness Center
Method
Administer qualitative interviews to the 4
medical champions responsible for MLP
implementation and delivery
Transcribe and analyze interviews and provide
an annotated transcript for each of the
interviews
Based on the interviews, develop guidelines
for improvement in the data collection, care
delivery, documentation and the efficiency of
the MLP at meeting patient's needs in
Colorado

Need for standardized screening procedure across
the clinics: different screening tools, consulted with
different professionals in choosing clients
e.g. health needs assessment of accountable care
collaborative, medical personnel, screening
children at routine checkups or Well Child care
Need to coordinate the medical and legal aspects of
the model: patients waiting, repitition
building legal capacity for the personnel
Difficulty in identifying the ideal patient.

Staff not feeling adequately prepared to
triage from a legal perspective

 Adapting the screening tools to the context

 A needs assessment would be very helpful to
adapt previously agreed upon screening forms for
the exact needs of the communities.

  • 2. Goal - Evaluate the process of MLP Delivery - Identify gaps in implementation - Needs that were not being met - Resources that were underutilized - Develop recommendations for improving efficiency in delivery and streamlining the process
  • 3. About the Medical Legal Partnership - Healthcare delivery model that integrates legal assistance into patient care to improve health and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals, children and families
  • 4. Method Literature review on MLP delivery, effectiveness and quality in order to generate questions for the key informants on the delivery and measurement of MLPs in the state Conduct site visits- Salud Medical Clinic, Colorado Legal Services, Colorado Children's Hospital, Colorado Refugee Wellness Center
  • 5. Method Administer qualitative interviews to the 4 medical champions responsible for MLP implementation and delivery Transcribe and analyze interviews and provide an annotated transcript for each of the interviews Based on the interviews, develop guidelines for improvement in the data collection, care delivery, documentation and the efficiency of the MLP at meeting patient's needs in Colorado

Recommendations for next steps Need for standardized screening procedure across the clinics: different screening tools, consulted with different professionals in choosing clients e.g. health needs assessment of accountable care collaborative, medical personnel, screening children at routine checkups or Well Child care Need to coordinate the medical and legal aspects of the model: patients waiting, repitition building legal capacity for the personnel
  • 10. Difficulty in identifying the ideal patient.  false positive screens  false negative screens  (gap between anticipated needs and actual needs)  not getting patients at the right time  language barriers Staff not feeling adequately prepared to triage from a legal perspective
  • 11. Recommendations  Staff capacity building  Adapting the screening tools to the context  Adapting the timing of the delivery to the context  A needs assessment would be very helpful to adapt previously agreed upon screening forms for the exact needs of the communities.
