2. Before I started producing my music video for the
song ‘Would I lie to you’ by John Gibbons I did a lot
of research on the EDM genre. This is because I
wanted to get the codes and conventions right. It
was helpful for me as I could see what different
EDM music videos were like and what particular
themes, that I could incorporate into my music
video. However from my point of view I feel I didn’t
totally confirm to the codes and conventions like
other EDM music videos, although this does show a
unique side to my video.
4. 1. The opening of my music video
2. My actor lip-syncing
3. Lyrics of the chorus part of the music
4. Location setting in the forest
5. Costumes/ First shot of my actor with the girl
6. A change in location
7. Shows the actor and actress in love and having fun
8. Camera work and editing/ My actor lip-syncing again in a different location
9. My end shot with the title and a love heart symbolling the type of video
5. My music video begins with my actor
walking to the beat. I wanted to start with
this shot as it shows my actor as sad and
lonely which goes along with the story line
of my music video. There are two types of
EDM style music video. I went for more of
the story line video rather than an up beat
dancing, bright light video.
Therefore I based my music video on artists
like Flume. There music video for Never be
like you really caught my eye because you
could go along with the actors and all their
emotions. This is why for my opening shot
my actor is looking down at the floor so the
audience understand that he is upset and
just wants love. Also it goes along with the
lyrics of ‘would I lie to you baby’ this shows
regret about the actions he's done.

7. Based on the fact that I think my music video was best suited to a
performance/story, lip syncing was a key part of my music video
therefore, when the chorus part of my music video came on I made my
main actor lip sync this part.
By having my actor lip-sync some parts of my video it becomes more
personal and more interactive with the audience. It also means there
is more of a connection between my narrative and the lyrics. A lot of
EDM music videos have lip-syncing in because especially at the
chorus part because this is usually the most well part known of the
song and where the most meaning of the song happens.
8. I chose to make some of the main parts of my chorus into lyrics. This
is due to the fact most EDM and fast pop music videos incorporate
this, it breaks up the footage for the audience. So that the audience
doesn’t have to just watch footage all the time. I decided to do it in
bright colours but still with a feminine purple colour to represent the
stereotypical love story of my music video.
Duke Dumont’s video for Ocean drive has lyrics throughout the whole
video, this is to get the audience to relate to the context of the lyrics
and really get into the song and the meaning of it.

9. I had a few settings for my music video, where Charlie (my main
actor) was sad and lonely I used the New forest set on top of a hill, its
was sunny but you could still see the frost on the ground and all the
bushes. This is really good as it adds to the affect of the video.
From the research I did, many EDM music videos have many
different locations that they shoot in as it means that there are more
cuts which can go quicker with beat of the music. However I feel this
is an area which I could improve on and for my music videos I could
have made my cuts line up with the beat of the music.
10. This is the first shot with both my actress and actor together in. I
used the beach for the first romantic scene with them two together,
the sun was at a low point in the sky so it looked like a romantic
sunset and added even more to the effect of the ‘love’ scene.
I got them to act like a couple and did some medium/ establishing
shot with the couple and the beach behind them.
Many EDM music videos have love story lines. I wanted to have this
in my music video. Flumes music video for Never be like you had a
couple throughout the whole video which had them acting together
and dancing to the music, therefore I have fitted this type of
convention in my music video.
11. For this change in location I used the under pass in Ringwood, it has
been graphitised and has god lighting for the mood that I wanted to
create. I only shot a few shots in this location, again it was when
Charlie was on his own without the girl that he desired to be with.
The lighting really helped me to set the dark, moody and mysterious
setting, it helps create the atmosphere for the audience, and show
them the emotions that Charlie is feeling. The graffiti on the wall also
represents what's going on in his mind, because graffiti is a an
expression within an art form of peoples emotions and how thy are
feeling at that certain time and I thought this went really well with
his emotions.
12. Again this is a screenshot of my actors having fun and acting like a
couple.
This sun is beaming down on them in this shot and reflecting on the
sea then onto them this was a really nice shot, I didn’t do a close up of
this and used the beautiful locations, to set the romantic tone of my
story line.
The shot is also very bright and colourful which is a good contrast to
the other moody, unhappy shots. This as helps with the story line as it
tells the story through the colour and different types of shots.
13. Andrew Goodwin's 5 aspects of a music video can be applied
here as it follows the conventions he mentions. The beat f
the music is high tempo and the lyrics and sad parts have
meaning behind them, so t is important that I linked the
music with the video. The video excels through illustration,
it illustrates the lyrics and connects the lyrics with the
visuals of the video. Moreover I conformed to the common
conventions of the modern day EDM music video, from the
camera work such as angles, lighting and colours, I also
made sure the beat of the music and the pace of editing was
similar.
14. The 6 characteristics of a music video
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristic’s – certain features are expected
out of a video depending on their genre
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals- the lyrics are represented with
visuals
There is a relationship between music and visuals- the cuts and edits are in sync
with the rhythm
The demands of the record label- they want to see a lot of images of their star,
want lots of close ups of the artists
Frequent reference to notions of looking ( screens within screens , artists look at
themselves)- treatment particular of the female body
Intertextual references- videos referencing past films, TV shows ,media
15. My actor singing the lyrics in the underpass, I got him to look
angry, moody and grumpy because again this was the part of
the scene where I wanted him to show his emotions. I also
wanted his emotions to be shown align with the words and
meaning of the lyrics.
I am using the conventions of a typical EDM music video, where
they show the lyrics emotions through performance.
16. My last shot was a slow panning down shot onto the
ground. Where I drew a love heart into the sand. I
wanted to end my music video like this as it’s a way of
ending the overall storyline it gives the audience that
closer of what's happening with the couple.
Then my title comes up, I decided to use bright white
writing so it stands out in bold. Typical conventions of
an EDM music video always have the title bright and
bold, this is why I wanted to stick to the typicl codes
and conventions and make my music video the same.
