Newspapers play a major influential role in society in a number of ways.
Once upon a time it was not full of celebrity gossip but instead political updates and important information.
Most popular newspapers read on a regular basis include: The Sun and daily Mirror and SHOULD BE 6 in total
Despite the major decline in the number of newspaper bought; over 50% still read the news everyday
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recession impact on the newspaper industry has been major and figures have declined in sales for the vast majority of the nations newspapers
There has been a significant decline in the number of newspaper readers and consumers have opted for other sources such as TV (news) as well as the internet with 83% of UK population having internet access at home
The majority of UK population own smartphones meaning accessing news and other information on the go and free of charge in some cases
The increase of printing costs means newspapers forced to raise prices (average being 12.3%) which consumers may not be able to afford
Newspapers have been around since 1621 with the first printing press being set up in 1476
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The change in the media industry has forced the set back in today’s newspaper industry.
Consumers can now access same information as found in the newspaper online, on their mobile phones as well as tablets.
Today’s generation are more technology aware
Free internet services available in many public places
Free news applications on smartphones means consumers do not see the need to pay to find out the latest

The UK newspaper publishing market has a medium level of market share concentration as the key players in the industry account for up to 54% between Jan 13-Dec 14 according to ABC (2014). As the chart shows, these companies include News International, Associated Newspaper, Express Newspaper, Guardian Media and Telegraph Media.

Its nearest rival, Associated Newspaper has an estimated 20% market share, owns titles such as Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday, London Metro, and Mail Online. As you can see, the other publishers find It diffficult to compete with these giants of the news industry as it very difficult without a top title.

Slide 1 Newspaper Growth
Inflation has been a huge factor for price increase
Biggest increase Daily Mail 25p however great readership meaning immense popularity
The Sun and Daily Mail not affected by the recession hence the small price increase
--------------------------------------------
Here are the six newspapers that have had a major price increase from 2000 to 2013. The inflation has been a huge factor with the price increase, hence why there has been no price waterfall.
As you can see the biggest increase was Daily Mail with 25p but has not altered its great readership which inevitably shows its immense popularity. The Sun and Daily Star were not affected by the recession hence the small amount of price increase.
Overall, this table provides us with an insight of the price increase of these 6 newpsapers and also with this climate the prices are still looking to increase.

Slide 2 Newspaper Wastages
2.5 million tonnes of newspaper consumed everyday
According to the archive newspaper print newspaper has been steadily increasing over the past 15 years
However the trend may not continue due to the pivotal role of digital technology
--------------------------------------
Around 2.5 millon tonnes are consumed in the UK each year. This inevitably shows the high demand and the growth of the newspaper market. Furthermore, according to the archive newspaper print has been steadily increasing over the past 15 years, but it is not certain whether the trend will continue as technology and internet play a pivotal role on the distribution of the information.

Slide 3 Readership by Age
The population of the the above 65 read newspapers most due to them not being advanced with digital technology etc and read hard copy media
This explains why the age group 15-24 read the less amount of newspapers as they are centred upton the globalisation of digital technology
The age group 25-34 tend to read newspapers whilst commuting according to newspaperhoc
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the newspaper readership by age in the UK, judging by this the population above 65 tend to read the most newspaper. This is inevitable as it is known the older generation stray away from the globalization of technology and prefer to read a hard copy of the media. This also explains why the age of 15-4 is less as this could possibly suggest they are more equipped with technology and are likely to be alerted about the news via online websites. The age gap from 25-64 most are likely to read the paper whilst commuting hence the same percentages.

Meaning newspaper cater to all
----------------------------------------------------------
These grades are taken to equate middle class and working class respectively. With ABC1 representing the upper class and C2DE representing the working class. The percentages show that despite the class newspapers are read the same. Meaning newspapers cater to all and are read the same way despite class.

Slide 5 Readership
Newspapers are read everyday therefore readership is a vital metric
These figures combine average weekly printed readership
State newspapers
Highest readership the Sun with 13,476 which means they are popular the readership was helped by the suns highest circulation too
The sun’s website plays a pivtotal role as it can be available on portable devices
Daily mail with 11,476 does not fall completely behind the Sun suggesting its trended to be on a rise and directly competes with the sun online and hard copy.
Surprisingly the metro has 7,885 due to the fact it’s a free paper readership figures should compete with the Sun. however maybe because they limit distribution to only stations it stops consumers from reading it and choose Sun instead.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newspapers are read every minute of the day, therefore one metric will need to be thoroughly analyzed is the newspaper readership. These figures combine average weekly printed readership. Presented to you are the top 6 newspapers that have a high readership in the UK. These are The Sun, Daily Mirror, Metro, Sunday Mirror, The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph. These figures are the combination of the actual physical copies of newspapers and also the articles on the own websites. Clearly the highest readership with a staggering 13, 476 again the sun leads competitors just like its high circulation too. Thus, showing the more circulation could possible mean more readership or it could jus show the huge brand perception sun offers. The sun’s website plays a pivotal role with its readership too as now its available on tablets meaning it is accessible for everyone. The Daily mirror does not fall behind the sun as much with 11,476 still a substantial amount proving that the daily mirror is on a rise and still directly competes with the Sun. The metro is a free newspaper, therefore many people may feel the readership will jus match leading newspapers such as the sun and daily mirror. However this is not the case as on an average week it achieves only 7,885 but its still in the top 3. The daily graph out of the 6 only gains 4,899 on a week this could be heavily due to its price as from Monday to Friday it prices at 70p and on the weekend its priced at £1.40.

All these online newspapers post monthly website traffic regularly. The mail online UK’s most popular online newspaper. Hence why it leads other online newspaper by a substantial amount with over 4 million users everyday. Furthermore Guardian is just as popular online just as it is with its printing also as it gains above 3 million users everyday. This also mirrors the online success for Telegraph as it too is popular like its printing. The Independent is the lowest this could possibly mean that many users prefer mail online as the alternative.
