1. • In our last media lesson we was looking at the marketing aspects of the film
‘Looking For Eric’.
• At the beginning we were shown a number of different screenshots from the film
and identify what genre, certificate and what they represented etc. as a starter
activity, bearing in mind we didn’t know anything about the film.
• What I have been learning in lessons is that for films to reach a large audience
there needs to be different aspects within the film to then promote at different
target audiences. This may include designing different posters to appeal to
different audiences, playing up particular elements of the film. Also trailers could
choose particular scenes to try and promote to a new market. This marketing
technique was used within the promotion of the film ‘Looking For Eric’, they had
come up with lots of different posters which could all potentially be used to aim
at a particular group, although not all of the posters were used and ,many were
mock-ups, only differing from another poster with something as simple as the
font. Four ways in which they tried to promote the film were as a Ken Loach film,
a football movie, a romantic film and a quirky, British movie.

2. The first poster we looked at was aimed at film fanatics
and promoted as a Ken Loach film. Ken Loach is a famous
director among film buffs and is known for his gritty style
of films. The poster is black and white reinforcing the
grittiness of the film and also portraying it as a serious
movie. Also the character towards the front of the poster
is not very glamorous, looking like an ordinary man
wearing scruffy clothes. The setting of the poster, a brick
wall also promoted the realistic feel of the movie.

3. The next poster was aimed at football fans that may be
interested in the movie and the poster has heavy football
connotations throughout. The poster features football
star Eric Cantona as the key image, taking up the most
space on the page and the picture is on a billboard,
highlighting that he is famous. Also the smaller image in
the corner also portrays the football element of the film.
He is seen celebrating and wearing a football shirt,
looking up at the Cantona billboard. The colours in the
poster are also football related, being the colour red
which is the colour for the football team that Eric
Cantona played for Manchester United.

4. Another poster was a poster promoting the movie as a British,
ensemble comedy. British comedies are known for how they
differ from the usual Hollywood comedy and are usually very
quirky. The poster shows this through the top image of Eric
Cantona playing the trumpet; also as he is British that also
shows how it is a British film. The large ensemble is at the
bottom of the poster, also showing this element of British
comedies. They are shown to have typical characteristics that
are in comedies, such as the leader of the gang, the dopey one
and so on.

5. As you can see there is a couple standing together and
Eric Cantona above them, the couple may be standing
together and the flowers are a stereotypical idea of what
men give to women but in the poster the male is looking
up at Eric Cantona which could represent how the flowers
are actually for him which shows how the story of the film
could be about the males love for Eric and the female by
his side. The flowers may also represent the theme of the
film as it could be centred around romance. The colours
used in the poster are bright and eye catching, this could
represented how the film itself is also bright and may have
a happy storyline, it could also be a representation of the
theme and genre as it could be a romance. The colours
used in the font is red which is a colour that signifies both
love and the idea of Manchester united as red is the
colour that symbolises their team. Overall this lesson
helped us a huge amount as we were able to understand
how we are meant to evaluate posters and interoperate
them, we were also able to understand the different
representations within a poster.
