Lesson 7: Subjects in Unusual Order

In most declarative sentences, the subject comes before the
verb. In some sentences, subjects can come between verb
parts, follow verbs, or not appear at all.

Questions (Interrogative): In most questions, the subject
comes after the verb OR between parts of the verb phrase.

Did the ending surprise you?          To find the subject, turn the question into
a statement. Then ask who or what is or
                                                      does something.

                                                      The ending did surprise you.

                                                        What did surprise you?

                                                                                                                2

Commands (Imperative Sentences): The subject of a

              is understood.
