Welcome! In this lesson, you will complete a variety of fun and interesting activities to do before, during, and after you read the book Where Butterflies Grow.  This book was written by Joanne Ryder  and was illustrated by Lynne Cherry.  All of these activities will be completed by you on the internet! For this lesson, you will need the following materials: computer with internet connection printer printer paper
Activity 1:  Before Reading Click here to go to Mrs. Fesmire’s Butterfly Blog so you can post two facts that you already know about butterflies.  Please post your facts in the “comment” section, and remember to use complete sentences. Click here to go the Mrs. Fesmire’s Butterfly Blog so you can post one or two questions that you have about butterflies. Please post your questions in the “comment” section, and remember to use complete sentences.
Activity 2:  Before Reading Before you begin reading Where Butterflies Grow, click on the following links to watch how a caterpillar changes into a butterfly! Link 1:  Caterpillar from egg to chrysalis Link 2:  Caterpillar forming a chrysalis Link 3:  Butterfly hatches from the chrysalis
Activity 2 Continued… Now that you have finished watching the videos, click here to make a poster about what you learned.  In your text section, please include 3 facts that you learned about caterpillars and butterflies.  Also, please include 1 image and 1 link to a website about butterflies. To begin making your poster, you will need to click on the blue words create a new poster.  After that you will need to enter the following information Class Name:  Hypothetical 2nd Grade Class Teacher’s Name:  Fesmire Class Code:  207299    To find your image and link, please use Ask Kids.
Activity 3:  During Reading To help you learn the meaning of some of words that may be difficult to understand while you read the story, please review these flashcards 3 times as you read the book.  Click on the words start study session to begin. When you have reviewed the flashcards 3 times, please create a crossword puzzle  using all of the vocabulary words and their definitions.  Please print your crossword puzzle to exchange with a classmate.
Activity 4:  During Reading Take a moment to post your favorite sentence from the book on Wallwisher.  Along with your favorite sentence, please write a complete sentence about why you like this sentence.  Does your favorite sentence make you feel a certain way or make you imagine or think about certain things?  Have fun seeing what your classmates have written!
Activity 5:  After Reading For this activity, you will create a diamante poem that is related to the book.  A diamante poem is a poem that is in the shape of a diamond.  It does not rhyme, but it does use words that are adjectives or words that end in –ing.  It can be about one topic or two different topics.  For your diamante poem, you will use two different topics which will be the words “caterpillar” and “butterfly”.  Please print off your poem when you are finished and turn it in to me. Activity 6:  After Reading For this activity, you will write an acrostic poem.  An acrostic poem is a poem that uses the letters of the topic word to begin each line.  All lines of the poem relate to or describe the topic word.  For your acrostic poem, choose either “caterpillar” or “butterfly” for your topic word.  To begin writing your acrostic poem, click here.  Please print your poem and turn it in to me when you are finished.
Beyond What You’ve Read Here are a few fun activities for you to do when you have finished reading the book Where Butterflies Grow.  Please choose 4 of the 5 activities to complete. Put together an online butterfly jigsaw puzzle. Play the Butterfly Match-up Game.  When you have correctly matched up all of the cards, you will reveal a special picture! Here is a fun and easy craft project called Drink Like a Butterfly.  To make this project, you will use objects that you can find around your house or in our classroom. Take this quiz to see how much you know about butterflies! Play the Butterfly Game to design and write about your own butterfly.
