1. It is twenty to seven
2. It is forty past seven
3. It is ten fifteen
4. It is five past two p.m.
5. It is ten to three a.m.
Telling the Time in English
the time, 'a.m.' is reserved for the morning hours, before
12pm. After midday, 'p.m.' indicates the 12 hours until
midnight.
'O'clock' is only ever used for precise hours. If it’s 'eight-oh-
one' (8:01), you can’t use 'o’clock'! So 1, 2, 3…, 11 and 12
o'clock are the only 12 o'clocks you’ll get! 13:00 is never 13
o'clock, but 1 o'clock or '1pm'.
22
23. We will talk of 'minutes past an hour' only for 30 minutes past an hour. At 6:31, we start
looking forward. It is closer to the next hour: 6:31 is 'twenty nine minutes to seven'! We only
have a 'half past, never a ‘half to'.
'Quarter past' and 'quarter to' are reserved for X:15 and X:45. The preposition 'at' usually
indicates time: 'Stop by at 8' or 'The show starts at nine forty five' (or quarter to ten or 9:45).
Phrases like 'in the morning', 'in the evening', 'past the hour' and 'minutes to the hour' are very
common: 'It’s eight in the morning'; 'The guests will arrive at 6 in the evening' (6pm or 18:00);
'It's ten past five (17:10). We need to get ready'; 'Its 5 minutes to 6! The guest will be here
soon! (17:55)'; 'It’s six fifteen (or quarter past six or 18:15). The guests are arriving'.
18:15 can be said as 'six fifteen' or 'quarter past six'
18:45 can be 'quarter to seven' or 'six forty five', but is never 'forty five minutes past six'!
08:00 is 'eight o'clock', eight A. M.' or 'eight in the morning'
12:00 is 'midday', 'noon’, 'twelve P M' or 'twelve o'clock'
00:00 is 'midnight'

47. Tips for taxi driver
Taxi drivers transport passengers from
one location to another for a fee.
Taxi drivers transport people for a fee
from one destination to another. Most
taxi drivers work in major cities or
metropolitan areas. They must know
their way around the city and its
surrounding area, although many cabs
today are equipped with navigational
devices. Taxi drivers are paid in several
ways, most often depending on a
taximeter that calculates the distance
and the fare. Taxi drivers generate business by responding to taxi company
dispatches, recognizing the hand signals of someone hailing the cab from the
curb and answering a phone call or a computer message.
How Taxi driver Are Paid
o Fares are calculated many ways depending on the city. Some cabs have
taximeters that base fares on distance and time. They are turned on when
passengers tell the taxi driver their destination and enter the taxi and is turned
off when the passenger arrives at his destination. Fares might be calculated by
neighborhood zones. Another way fare might be calculated is a flat rate. Some
taxi drivers charge extra fares at night and for carrying luggage and additional
passengers. Taxi drivers might get tips depending on how well they served the
passengers.
47
48. How Taxi driver Get Customers
o Taxi drivers stop to would-be passenger's hand signals, respond to radio
dispatches, phone calls and computer messages. They also respond to phone
calls from the actual cab company. Passengers are also found at such places as
hotels, airports, bus and train stations.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
o Taxi drivers perform vehicle inspections before they get on the road.
Inspections include making sure brakes and tail lights are working properly
and fuel levels are appropriate. Most drivers are employed by a transportation
company, and they start their shift by reporting to the taxi garage for vehicle
pickup. They make sure the inside and outside of the vehicle are clean and
odor-free. Taxi drivers also fill out daily activity logs, which must be
accurately updated with every client. The vehicle log must include passengers'
names (if they called the cab company), destination and total fare.
Travel Devices
o Taxi drivers are usually equipped with a map of the surrounding area and a
navigational device.

Start of Shift
A taxi cab driver starts his work day in much the same manner that most
people do--driving to his employer's place of business in his own vehicle. He
48
49. will drive a company vehicle during his shift, but this vehicle remains at the
company parking lot or is used by other drivers between his shifts.
Since a cab company generally operates 24/7, a driver's shift may start at any
hour of the day. Shifts may be longer or shorter than the standard 8 hours,
depending on the scheduling needs of the company.
Taxi drivers are often expected to wear a company uniform while working.
It's also a good idea for drivers to devote sometime in the morning to
maintaining a neat personal appearance.
Earning Money
While some taxi drivers are employed by companies at an hourly wage (with
the company collecting all cab fares at the end of the day), the industry
standard is for drivers to work as independent contractors. Independent cab
drivers pay a lease fee to the company for each shift that they work, then keep
all cab fares and tips that they receive from passengers. In return, the
company will dispatch assignments to drivers based on calls received from
customers requesting rides. This dispatching is done through a radio that each
driver has in his or her cab.
The lease arrangement can be a blessing or a curse for a driver, depending on
how much business there is on a given day. A busy day can yield huge profits,
whereas a slow day can be a day where a driver must pay the company to
work. For this reason, a cab driver spends his day hoping for many runs and
long runs and is authorized to spend time between dispatched runs seeking
flag fares--passengers who physically signal to a passing taxi for a pickup
rather than calling in for a ride.
Taking Passengers
When a driver is actually taking a passenger, he makes money from a base
charge, then by running a meter for the length of the ride. This meter
measures the number of miles the car is running and charges a rate per
fraction of a mile. If the car is caught in traffic, some cabs have meters that
49
50. will switch to a timed charge rather than a distance charge. Lease drivers may
choose to turn off a meter early for a fare, since the money is being paid to
them.
A taxi driver must have a good understanding of local geography and have
excellent navigational skills. It is also helpful if he can spend some of the ride
time making pleasant conversation with the passengers.
Codes, Regulations and Records
A cab driver must follow a series of codes and regulations during his day, as
well as adhere to certain record-keeping practices. Codes include
communication codes (numbers) that are spoken to dispatch agents to indicate
certain situations, like taking a run, bathroom break, free for a run and
completing a shift.
Regulations must be followed involving conduct with passengers, charging
passengers and traffic and safety considerations.
At the end of the day, the driver must turn in a record of his day, including
information about how many passengers he had, where he drove and what
fees were charged. The cab company uses this information to make decisions
about how they continue to run their business, such as determining how many
cabs should be running in certain areas at certain times and whether or not
more drivers should be contracted.

51. Here are a few tips on safe driving.
Cutting Corners
Never cut a corner whatever the road condition
as this is bad practice and once you get into
this habit it will be hard to break, always drive
as if there is someone using the other side of
the road
Use of signals
Giving signals: Give clear signals in plenty of
time, having checked it is not misleading to
signal at that time. Use them if necessary
before changing course or direction, stopping
or moving off. Make sure the signal is
cancelled after use
Parking
Always park where it’s safe - legal - and
convenient for other road users, including your
passengers to emerge from your vehicle.
