DIRECTIONS AND SIGNS
AUTOR FAUSTO MOROCHO
I. INTRODUCTION
1. When a person get lost in a strange place, he has
to ask somebody for direction, on the other hand,
when others ask you the way, you must express it
clearly so that he can find the place.
2. Some useful signs are quite important in our daily
life.
II. TEACHING TASKS
1.Read and translate maps on the book, understand and
remember the signs and places on them.
2.Learn some samples about asking for and giving
directions.
3.Practice asking for and giving directions.
4.Remember some useful signs.
TASK 1
Look at the maps and understand the
meaning of each sign.
TASK 2

about asking for and
giving directions.

of the corridor, turn left again.

A: Where is the lift, please?——finding lift
B: Over there in the middle of the hall. Take the lift to the filth floor
and then turn left. It’s the second room on the
right.
——telling direction of the lift
1. SENTENCES FOR ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS
Excuse me, can you tell me the way to…?
Could you please tell me the way to …?
Can you tell me where the…is?
How can I get to …?
Could you tell me which stop to get off at?
Excuse me, where is …?
2. SENTENCES FOR GIVING DIRECTIONS
It's just around the corner.
Go straight ahead and turn left at the second crossing.
Go on for about 100 meters. It's on your left side. You
can't miss it.
Go along the corridor and it's on your right side.
Take the first turning on the left and walk straight.
Just walk on until you get to Hill street, which is about
three blocks from here.
Go up the road to the third turning on the left.
Walk 10 minutes/200 meters/two blocks and you’ll be there.
Go up the road to the third turning on the left.
Go down the street till the crossroads and turn left there.
You will see it on the/your right.
The shop will be on the right-hand side of the second block.
It’s only 2 bus-stops. You may go there on foot.
Take the lift or go upstairs to the third floor.
NOTES
1. The focal point of this section is asking for and giving
directions. Between the two parts, the later one is more
difficult. We should know usually there are several kinds
of situations, namely, on foot, by car/bus, etc. The most
important thing we should do is to remember the usual
way to express them and accumulate such kind of
sentences as many as possible.
2. In addition to speech, when somebody asks us the way,
we can tell them the way by means of sign language. In
this way, we can express it more clearly.
TASK 3
Practice asking for and giving directions.
1.Suppose you are a stranger in a city, you want to
go to West Avenue, compose a short dialogue
with your partner, asking how to get there,
A: Excuse me, do you know West Avenue?
B:West Avenue? Look, you see the Market Road over
there?
A: Yes.
B: Well, you go all the way down Market Road pass the
market, and turn left. West Avenue is the first turning
on the right.
A: Thank you very much!
Task after class: Ask how to get somewhere in your city.
2. Suppose a person ask you how to get the nearest
bank, tell him clearly.
A: Excuse me, do you happen to know if there is a bank
near here?
B: Just a minute. Let me see, the nearest bank is on
South Street.
A: Is it possible to walk there?
B: Yes, you go straight on till the crossroads, then turn
left at the crossroads. You will see the bank across the
street.
A: Thanks.
Task after class: Ask how to get a post office nearby.
SUBJECT OF TASK 3:
Look at the map, you can find a named place or
sign quickly, and then tell others how to get there.
