Mission and Vision
VISION: To inspire inquisitive thinkers and encourage
responsible stewardship of the past, present, and future.
MISSION: The Museum creates meaningful opportunities
for people of all ages to learn, reflect, and have fun
through hands-on and collection-based explorations in
science and history.
{
Breaking the Mold
• Designed from the inside out
• Integrating hands-on and
artifact-based experiences
• Telling global stories through
the local lens of our community
• Encouraging active visitor
contributions and repeat visitation
{
A Museum That…
Conveys history,
science, and culture as
a way of knowing.
Encourages curiosity and
highlights history, science,
and culture as a way to
satisfy it. Demystifies the
traditional assumptions
people make about the
individual disciplines.
Conveys history,
science, and culture
as a way of knowing

Educates
Educates. Teaches the user something
they didn’t know before...or didn’t realize
they knew. Could be about themselves,
their world, or the Museum itself.
Builds relationships. Provides a way
for the user to know the Museum or
another user better through
participation/interaction.
Fosters dialogue. Creates, establishes,
or otherwise encourages commentary and
the back-and-forth of ideas and opinions.
A Museum That…
{
Provides a sense of place.
Connects user to the physical space of the
Museum, perhaps even redefines what
the Museum’s space is for that person.
Encourages sharing. Incites the
user to share (thoughts, experiences,
media, etc) either with the Museum or
with their friends on behalf of the
Museum.
Establishes transparency. Gives
the user an intimate view of the inner
workings/strategies of the Museum.

The Three Intersecting Themes
Our Self. The ways that we live,
learn, work and communicate are all
changing rapidly. The Museum will
help visitors understand and grapple
with these changes.
Our Community. In our increasingly
mobile society where neighbors no
longer know neighbors, there is a
growing need for new institutions that
can bring people together.
Our Environment. For the first time
in history, human activities have risen
to the level of geologic forces that are
reshaping the face of the planet. The
Museum will help visitors understand
these forces and what the visitors can
do to help.
{
A Community Hub
The Museum can be an expert or
resource in many things, but not all
things.
Becoming a community hub to connect people to
ideas, information, and organizations ensures the
best possible answers for our visitors. If we don’t
know the answer, we know how to connect our
community with the people who do.
{
Conduit of Information
The Museum should be a conduit of
information, not a depository of
information.
Information should flow in and out of the Museum,
not land here for its final destination. Providing
tools and services to our community to engage with
history and science, on multiple levels of entry.
{
Different Learning Styles
Different people have different
learning styles.
The key element: provide many ways to engage
with our audience, in both traditional &
non-traditional, informal & formal methods.
Providing different entry points and access to
information allows us to reach a variety of learners.
{
A New Engagement Model
Rather than be a place that visitors come to
only once a year when out-of-town guests
are in town, we want to encourage repeat
visitation.
New discoveries each time
they visit. And finding
ways to interpret and
explore history & science
in different ways.
{
The Future: Phase III Exhibits
Water
Energy & Sustainability
Early Childhood
Of the remaining planned exhibit zones, we can
achieve a level of visitor experience with these themes
through programming and activities on the floor.
For Early Childhood, for example, we are currently
offering Tiny Tot Adventures program to augment the
pre-K experience.
