This document outlines steps for libraries to address climate change and energy issues. - 20. Changing Behaviors Positive/+ Reinforcement – reward individuals for “green” actions. Positive /+ Punishment - suffer consequences of poor “green” habits. Negative /- Reinforcement –negative condition stopped when behavior changes. Negative /- Punishment – take away the temptations of poor green habits.

- We are beginning a new era. Not a post era anything. To continue living the way we want be need to change – its not sustainable. As Tom Friedman said in book Hot Flat and Crowded.
- Hot (global warming): -industrial revolution began this trend of using fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas) which emit CO2 (from transportation, from humans, from cows, from industry) Over last 100 years, we have dramatically changed the environment. - Problem: its an invisible gas we dont see it smell it and just have indirect effects so people ignore it. Global temp has risen .08% C - seems like nothing, but compare it to a 1 degree body temp in human which is a sign to you that something is wrong and shouldnt be ignored. Flat (flattening of earth, more access globally to info and resources): - more individuals can now get information and access more resources thus growth in middle class and higher standards of living in all countires. They want to live like america. Problem: we don’t have the sustainable resources for the world to live like americans.Crowded (incredible population growth): - check out infoplease.com - put in your birth year and get info. EX: 1950:2.28 billion people = 2050: estimated 9 billion people. -China for ex has been growing 8-9% in recent years. - cities will grow (from 1950 - 1995 we went from 5 to 14 megacities); small cities will be hit hardest w/ the lack infrastructure to support this many people. - CIA Director Hayden says demographics/population is the biggest threat to the world not terrorism. WHY? countries that cant sustain this growth in population = instability (which can lead to terrorism) More young people, not getting their basic needs back (lack of infastructure) will then cause more violence and upheaval. This will occur in many mideast countries.
- Largest growing population demographic is MIDDLE CLASS IN POOR COUNTRIES. Its not sustainable for other countries to live like we do over-compusmption but how can we tell them they cant.(ex: dinner party, we get to eat everything and invite them only to desert and ask them to share and not overcomsume)
- *biodiverstiy loss @ recordrates:Deforestation: produced more CO2 than all transportation combined! 1 acre lost/second in tropics. 1/2 tropical forest are gone. 1/2 wetlands are gone. 1/3 mangroves are gone (ex: katrina). 20% coral is gone. 90% of predator fish our gone. we are *disruptive climate change:We produce 1 lb CO2 a day driving. EX: compare it to if you threw out 1lb of trash from your car for every mile you drive (2 lbs if you drive a hummer) loosing species at a rate 1000x more than normal/natural.
- the convergence of these things is most dynamic shaping of the world in the future.which can give birth to new world, new jobs, new economy--> the effect of these will be on multiple future generations but with new tools and technologies and collaborations we can meet this challenge. In the past countries who took on issues/challenges then lead the world in the next era! Its time for the US to take change and take the lead.* There are ways to build an economy through innovation and technology (jobs!) yet lower out waste. Cradle to Cradle ideas – create things (furniture, buildings etc) that can be reused and rebuilt – not going into landfill. (Bill McDonough & Michael Braungart )
- Sustainability, or going green, is more than a buzz word but the way we must all embrace the future to meet the triple bottom line: equity, the economy and the environment.. “meeting the needs of the present in such a way that future generations can meet their own needs." - Libraries are meant to be the center of their schools, campuses, and communities, drawing together diverse entities and disciplines, acting as catalysts for exploration and as models for their community. This session will explore the politics, behaviors and partnerships required for libraries to influence, educate and model the idea of going green. Some tips on how to get started going green will also be shared and discussed**Can we build library collections & materials, teach workshops, act as a model, and use sustainable practices in our libraries?

- Behavior is something that you act out physically, such as taking a walk, or smoking a cigarette, or rolling your eyes when your spouse is complaining. However, behaviors can be subtle, non-physical things too. Thinking can be considered a behavior, for instance.HABITS: for example, you could never have walked up to a computer for the first time and type 90 words a minute. A habit is any behavior that is repeated often enough to become automatic and almost effortlessCan you give me an example of these?So to change habits we need to influence behavior. How do we change behavior?
