This is a brief presentation on the subject of Discourse Analysis as a Research Method in Education. This was created by Apostolos Koutropoulos and Rosemarri Klamn for EDDE 802, assignment 2.
2. Discourse Analysis…
Saying things using language never goes without
doing things, or being things.
Building language is a mutual process.
Some DA look only at “content” of the language
being used, the themes or issues being discussed in
a conversation.
Other DA approaches pay more attention to the
structure of language (grammar) and how this
structure functions to make meaning in specific
contexts
3. Discourse Analysis Vs…..
Narrative analysis
The study or stories of individuals, groups,
societies and cultures
Conversation analysis
The study of social interactions of everyday life
Critical Discourse Analysis
The study of social discourse in terms of their
societal implications like status, solidarity, the
distribution of social goods, and power

Social Languages
Discourses
Conversations
Intertextuality
7. Validity in DA
The burden falls on the critic of the analysis to show
that important details left out are relevant by
adding them in and changing the analysis.
Discourse analysts must always be willing to share their
data.
