Main Achievements
THE INTERVENTIONS
.
Competitive Research Fund (CRF):
Stemming Aflatoxin pre- and post-harvest waste in the groundnut value chain (GnVC) in Malawi and
Zambia
The problem: Aflatoxin
contamination of groundnuts poses a risk
to human health and is a major constraint
to trade in most African countries
Project Objectives: To assess, validate
and further develop promising pre and post
harvest technologies; to document and a
disseminate validated technologies and
practices among farmers ; to advocate for
conducive national and regional policies
and regulatory frameworks for stemming
aflatoxin
Expected impact: Reduced aflatoxin
contamination of groundnuts for improved
food safety, food security and enhanced
health and trade.
Optimizing plant densities for reduced aflatoxin contamination
Participatory evaluation of drying methods for reducing aflatoxin
contamination
Participatory evaluation of hand-sorting methods in reducing
aflatoxin contamination
Evaluating the role of crop residue on pre-
harvest aflatoxin contamination of groundnut
Technology and practice validation in progress; Farmer mobilization and training on going; FANRPAN Regional Dialogue on postharvest
management loss management (PHLM) and aflatoxin in in Zambia held.
