This document summarizes how the media product "Misconception" uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real media. It discusses how the teaser trailer, title, setting, costumes, camera work, fonts, poster, and magazine cover both follow and challenge conventions in different ways. For example, the teaser trailer takes inspiration from "The Black Swan" by showing the title at the end, while the dance studio setting provides a unique location not typically seen in thrillers. Overall, the document analyzes the different elements of the media product through the lens of film conventions.

Evaluation Question One
1. Evaluation Question 1
Freya Blount
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
2. Title
The Black Swan was a major inspiration for
our teaser trailer and film. Our group thought
it worked well to follow the conventions of
the title for The Black Swan. In many trailers
the title is displayed at the beginning or near
the beginning , however in the black swan it
come at the end, therefore our title is also
shown at the end of the trailer. We thought
by having the title at the end it would force
the viewers to want to watch the trailer till the
end to find out the title of the film. By having
the title as one of the last things the
audience will see allowing them to
remember the name and for it to stick in their
minds. We used this convention to all build
up the music adding suspense until the title is
revealed. Like in The Black Swan, we chose
to use monochrome colours and to keep the
theme dark, connecting with genre of the
film which is psychological thriller, similar to
the genre of The Black Swan. We
transformed the ‘I’ in Misconception into a
ballerina. We did this to add originality to our
title and to brand the film, making the title
and film recognizable. The ballerina links in
well the the storyline to our film.

3. Setting/Location
As a group we have chose the setting of a dance studio. We
decided on this location as it links well to the narrative of out
film. The setting in our film differs from other thriller films. One
of the conventions for a thriller is to have the location of a
house or building. The film The House at The End of The
Street, is a an example of a typical thriller setting, where the
film is mainly filmed in one or two houses. In our thriller we set
in the dance studio as we wanted to focus on the mind set
of the dancers. We wanted to use the dance studio to
incorporate the mirrors and the split personality as this is one
of the main elements in the film. We wanted to add
confusion and create a different location as this would force
the audience to wonder and want to see the film. However
we did also include some shots where the character was
walking down the street and was in a bedroom. These
locations follow the conventions of a thriller.

4. Costume/Props
As a group are use of costume and
props both challenge and follow
conventions of real media products.
There aren't many thriller that involve
dance/ ballet themes, therefor by
having dance costumes, such as the
tutu and ballet shoes, challenges the
costumes in other thrillers. Having a
prop, such as the ballet box, which
confuses the audience, follows many
psychological films like Insidious.

5. Camera Work and Editing
As a group we did a lot of research for out teaser trailer. One of our main
inspirations for our film was The Black Swan. We were inspired by the shot of the
main character in the mirror where her reflection does not match. Our trailer
follows the editing and camera work features for The Black Swan as we have
used the camera angle to show the reflection in the mirror. For the majority of
The Black Swan trailer was filmed using hand held camera work. We used a
hand held camera to film the town scene, while walking down the street,
however the majority of out trailer was filmed using the tripod especially when
creating the mirror shot.

6. Title front and style
The font we used throughout our trailer was Assassins . It follows
most thriller fonts as it is a similar style, for example all the letters are
capitals an they are thin an have a sharp look to them. The
majority of thriller trailers seem to display their title on a black
background we did not follow this convention as filmed clips to
ensure we could add text on top in suitable places.

7. Poster
The Misconception poster created by my group and I follows many of the convention of a film
poster. We have ensure the main characters names are at the top of the poster. We have
positioned the title the roughly in the bottom third of the poster. This is not a convention of a
thriller as they are usually in the center of the poster however we were not able to position the
title there as it would sidetrack from the image. We have used a specific font and a ballerina
symbol to create the logo as this will brand our film. Again creating the title into a logo is a
convention of a film poster.
Under neither the title we have added the release date of the film and above the title we have
adding a tag line. Both of the elements follow the conventions of a film poster.
We have adding a star rating the center and at the top of the poster to create a more
professional feel. We have followed the conventions of a film poster as we have added a billing
block and out indent logos at the very bottom of the poster.
In many thriller posters there is usually a colour theme of a blue tinted image and white font or a
dark image with white or red font. We have followed this convention as we have added a blue
tint to our image and all font used is in white.
Many thriller posters have the image of the once character, we have followed this convention
as we are showing the one character and her slit personality. However, thriller posters usually
show a long shot the setting or location in the background of the image and we have not
followed this convention.
As a group we decided to make the poster landscape as it would show of our image better.
This is not a convention of a thriller poster as the majority of thriller posters are portrait showing
the one character however having the poster landscape is a convention of a poster in general.

9. Magazine Cover
Our group chose the magazine Little White Lies for our
magazine cover. We created the magazine cover by taking a
photograph of the character and sketching the image out
adding scars and cuts. We made one side pure with no
imperfections and the other side evil with cuts, scars, veins and
a red eye. By drawing the image, we have followed the
convention of the Little White Lies magazine as they use
sketches and cartoons as the image.
We have also used the logo for Little White Lies as this is another
convention. We have positioned the logo in the center at the
top of the magazine cover as this is where it is usually positioned.
We have positioned the tittle in the bottom left of the magazine
cover. This, again, is a convention of a Little White Lies magazine
cover.
