History
In the history of music the term "pop music" was first used in 1926. It was used to
describe "a piece of music having a popular appeal",consisting of relatively short and
simple love songs.
Pop music history states that the term "pop music" originated in Britain in the
mid-1950s. In 1950s television was introduced and visual presence of pop stars helped
to gain more popularity. Pop music is a genre of popular music that came up as a softer
alternative to rock and roll.
1960s: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones 1970s: Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley
1980s: Madonna, Whitney Houston 1990s: Britney Spears, Mariah Carey
2000s: Rihanna, Beyonce 2010s: Justin Bieber, One Direction
Evolution of pop
1. The 1960s were a time of creativity and innovation and many new styles of
popular music developed in the aftermath of rock 'n' roll
2. In the 1970s the decade saw the rise of disco, which became one of the biggest
genres of the decade
3. The 1980s saw the emergence of dance music and new wave as disco fell out of
fashion
4. Pop music in the 90s saw the continuation of teen pop and dance-pop trends
5. In the 2000s, with songs and pieces available as digital sound files, it has become
easier for music to spread from one country to another
6. Through the mixture of musical genres, new popular music forms are created to
reflect the ideals of a global culture
Audience
During the 20th century there was an increase in the variety of music that people had
access to. Pop music has created, marketed and oriented towards preteens and
teenagers.
The pop genre is the genre that many people listen to. It's the typical music people
will play as it's the most popular although the genre is popular with many different
age groups the typical target age would be between 16 and 21. Most pop music is
targeted at girls, for example "Little Mix" are songs that teen girls can relate to. Whilst
groups like "One direction" are still generally popular with girls.
