3. What have you learnt from
your audience feedback?
To get audience feedback, we undertook a focus
group, for this we had 9 people watching our trailer
and getting feedback off of them, to get feedback
we used a questionnaire which consisted of open
and closed questions and also held and open
discussion throughout stages of it. This type of
audience feedback was very useful after finishing
our film promotional package because all people in
our focus group were in our target audience. This
helped as they could identify mistakes or any
possible improvements which would be make the
product more effective once complete. This
feedback gave us as a group an idea of weather our
film promotional package was successful and
weather the audience understood the film trailer.
Focus Group
We were informed from the trailer that the audience
mainly thought that the protagonist was the father in this
film trailer, this was exactly what we was hoping for as we
tried to make the father seem guilty through the use of a
red herring. Nobody presumed that the protagonist was
Emily, but Emily was the protagonist in our trailer, so this
was a success, one of the people from the focus group
quoted on their questionnaire that 'Emily was innocent
compared to the sinister nature of the villain'.
During the open discussion, everyone said that they
would go and watch the full film just from watching the
trailer, this shows the success of our trailer as everyone in
our target audience claimed that they would go and
watch the film if a full version was released in the cinema.
Film Trailer Questionnaire
To get more feedback about the trailer, we decided to create a
questionnaire with questions all based on the film trailer.
We asked them to fill out the questionnaire directly
after watching the film trailer. As we had already established
that their age fits into the target audience, we didn't ask for
their age, as we wanted a mixed opinion of all ages in our
target audience.
On the questionnaire which we had given out, we asked the
focus group if they would make any changes to our trailer and
if so, to add comments of different shots which they believed
would fit in with the trailer and improve it, we were informed
by a 2 people that they believed there wasn't much of a sense
of location, therefore we added an establishing shot of the
outside of the house at the start of the trailer, we believed
this would create more of a sense of location.
Film Trailer Questionnaire
For the first question, we asked "Which gender do you think this film is
aimed at?" The majority of people believed that the film was targeted at
mixed genders, this was evident by the 7/9 people who said this, 1 person
said that it was predominantly targeted to a male audience and 1 person
said that it was predominantly aimed to a female audience. This shows
that our film trailer was a success for this as the majority of the target
audience said that it was aimed at mixed genders, this shows that they
understood the film trailer. I think the use of both of the main characters
being different genders, potentially gives the film a wider range of a
target audience as both genders can be appealed to the film.
For the second question, we asked "What do you think the target
audience for this film trailer is". 100% of people we asked responded
saying that they thought the target audience was between 15-25, they
were all correct and established that they were the target audience, this
also shows that they believe it attracts to them, and that maybe they
could relate to other people in the target audience which would enjoy this
film, this is a positive thing as they have shown that they believe most
people in their age category would understand and go and watch the full
film.
Film Trailer Questionnaire
For the third question we asked "What genre do you believe this film
trailer is?" 5/9 people said that they thought the genre was horror due
to the element of "panic and danger" which was associated with a lot
of the shots. A reaction was that "the short clips, shrill noises and
constant theme of fear" makes it sound like a horror film. On the other
hand 4/9 people associated the trailer as a psychological thriller. One
of these 4 said "The trailer suggests mind games and a situation where
one hides is psychological". The genre which we were hoping to come
across was that it was a psychological thriller, but this could be a
positive thing because now we could be targeting a wider range of an
audience if it is associated as a horror film or psychological thriller film,
therefore more people may want to go watch the full version of the
film. These results do show that we stuck to the codes and
conventions of a psychological thriller, but maybe the audience were
feeling fear rather than thinking about the mystery behind who the
killer was.
Film Trailer Questionnaire
For the fourth question, we asked "What were the 3 most memorable
shots from the trailer?" From this, there were several shots which stood
out to the focus group, the shot of Emily hiding as 4/9 people found it to
be the most memorable shot, we felt this was an important as we wanted
the element of the game "hide and seek" to attract the audience as it
plays a great amount of significance in the plot to the film. Another the
shadow figure which was moving towards the camera, as 3/9 people
associated this shot as the most memorable due to "the element of
mystery to who/what the shadow is". Another popular answer was the
shot of the shadow figure which was moving towards the camera, as 3/9

in the house and banging on the door as 3/9 people associated this as the
most memorable shot, this is a positive thing from our prospective as our
aim was to hide the protagonist and to make her seem innocent by using
a red herring. Evidence of her being hid as the protagonist is suggested as
one of the responses for the hiding shot was that "the secrecy added to
the panic and fear", and another response from the shot of Emily being
trapped was "that there was no escape for her" and there was "fear and
desperation being associated with Emily being trapped".
Film Trailer Questionnaire
During the process of creating our trailer, our aim was to hide the villain, and to make
the villain seem innocent as a victim rather than a killer. To find out if we successfully
had hidden the protagonist, we asked "Who do you think the protagonist/villain was
and why?" The most popular answer for this question was that 4/9 people believed
that the protagonist was the father and the most important response was that nobody
identified Emily as being the protagonist. This is a positive thing as we tried to
make Emily seem too innocent to hurt anyone, we wanted Emily to look the victim to
her father by the use of a red herring. This obviously worked as one response was that
"Emily seems innocent compared to the sinister nature of the father". This proves that
the goals which we set to represent our characters were successful.
Creating the soundtrack was a very hard process, as sounds/ music for a psychological
thriller were hard to find and not many of them would work with our trailer. For the
sixth question, we asked "Do you think the soundtrack compliments the trailer?" 100%
of people in the focus group said that the soundtrack complimented the trailer and
creates a sense of "fear", "panic" and "suspense". One person stated that "there was a
sense of danger and panic which is fitting with the images within". We were also
informed by one person in an additional comment that although the soundtrack
complimented the trailer, they believed that there wasn't a lot of consistency of the
"booms" throughout the trailer. We understood their comment and created a second
version of our film trailer and added sound to the background where we thought it
would be appropriate, this worked so therefore we placed it on the background of the
finished product of the trailer.
Film Trailer Questionnaire
As we disguised the villain to the plot with a red herring, we wanted to
know what spin the audience believed the plot would take, so we
decided to ask the focus group on the questionnaire "What would you
predict the story of the film to be based on evidence given in the
trailer?". From this 4/9 people identified that the plot to this trailer is
surrounding a game of hide and seek between the brother and sister,
this is important as we wanted the game to appear as important to the
plot, the majority of the focus group realized this. Nobody in the focus
group identified the protagonist as Emily due to the red herring, but
2/9 believed that the protagonist was the father and that he had
something to do with the murders. This is exactly what we were
hoping the focus group would respond with, as we wanted the plot to
seem a mystery to the audience.
Overview of the Film Trailer
Questionnaire
As an overview question we decided to ask "Would
you go and watch it in the cinema?". 8/9 people
said that they would go and watch this film in the
cinema, this is positive as the age range of this
focus group was 16-25 which matches our target
audience. Therefore on average, we can come to
the estimation that 89% of people in our target
audience would go and watch this in the cinema,
therefore I have come to the conclusion that the
presentation of our product was a success.
Film Poster
During the focus group, we carried out an open discussion for feedback on the
success of our film posters. From the focus group I got feedback from the colour
scheme, 100% of the focus group believed that the colour scheme was effective on
my film poster and that the colour scheme does work and it was said to have looked
professional. The aim which I had for my film poster was to create mystery behind
who the killer was going to be, I did this by having the image of a females eye, I
attempted to make the female look innocent and be represented as a "victim"
rather than a villain. They believed that the most memorable feature on my poster
is the main image as she is being represented as the "victim" in my poster, and she
is "hiding and something has happened to her so she looks scared", and "as if
something is coming to get her due to the image of the hand". But another person
described the image to be presenting Emily as the protagonist due to the expression
of the eye showing that "she cant believe what she has done and looks as if she may
have killed someone". Therefore it created a code of enigma, which is exactly what I
wanted as the killer is being disguised, but due to the expression, there is also a
chance that it could be her, this successfully made connections to the film. Overall
100% of the focus group said that they would also go and find the trailer online if
they had just seen this poster being advertised, therefore I would deem the product
of my film poster to be a success as it advertised the film trailer well.
Film Magazine Questionnaire
Before creating my film magazine, I wanted to know what
my target audience would want on the cover of my film
magazine. To do this I handed out a questionnaire to
everyone in the focus group to fill out.
I created a questionnaire based on the ideas for a film
magazine and have handed it out to nine members of my
focus group to ask what they would like and would they
think would make a good film magazine. I am going to
consider their responses whilst creating my magazine
front cover as I will have an idea of what my target
audience want to see/read.
Film Magazine Questionnaire
The first question I asked on my questionnaire was “What age group
are you in ….” I had six responses saying that they were aged between
18-21, two responses saying they were aged between 16-17, no
responses from anyone aged 11-15 or 27+ and one aged 22-26, this
suggested to me that I would be aiming my magazine at young adults
between the age range of 16-26, just like my film trailer.
The second question which I asked on my questionnaire was “Which
gender are you?”, I asked this question to make sure I realised what
the males wanted on a magazine and what the females want on a
magazine, but from the results of the questionnaire, it seems they
have very similar opinions. I had six responses from males and three
responses saying that they were female.
Film Magazine Questionnaire
The third question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which of
the following articles would you be more interested in reading? (tick
two)' I had 5 responses saying that they would be interested in
Reading film reviews, I had three responses for actor interviews and
tickets to an opening premiere. I had two responses for the latest films
released and behind the scenes shots/interviews and one response for
a look at the latest award winning films.
The fourth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which
title for the magazine (masthead) do you prefer?' I had mixed
responses from this question, mainly from only two options, Motion
had four responses and Spotlight had three responses, some of the
people attending the focus group also recommended some of their
own for me, for example Action and Spotlight. I will not consider which
masthead I will use for my film magazine. Screen, Audition and
broadcast had no responses.
Film Magazine Questionnaire
The fifth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which
slogan do you prefer?' I had a lot of responses for Lights, Camera..
Action at six responses, getting behind the scenes had two responses
and the film guidebook had one response. Get all the latest film info
had no responses.
The sixth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which
colours should the magazine be? (choose three)' White and black
were very popular responses having nine votes each, so everyone
voted white and black as 2/3 main colours to be used. Red had six
responses and blue had two responses, one of the participants in this
questionnaire also came up with an answer for me, they came up with
the colour yellow to be used, I will consider their responses once
creating my film magazine.
Film Magazine Questionnaire
The seventh question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Would
you buy a film magazine?' I had 7 responses saying yes that they
would buy a film magazine, and for those who said that they wouldn't
buy the film magazine, I asked them why on the question, both
responses stated that they wouldn't buy the magazine as it is only
based on one subject and they prefer to read something which gives
information about a variety of subjects.
The eighth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'How
much would you pay for a film magazine?' I had mixed responses
from this question which I asked, a majority of options were chosen.
two people said they would pay between £1.00-£1.50 for a film
magazine, three people said that they would pay between £1.50-£2.00
and £2.00-£2.50 for a film magazine, one person said they would pay
between £2.50-£3.00 and nobody said they would pay more than
£4.00
Film Magazine Questionnaire
The ninth question which I asked on my
questionnaire was 'What would you prefer to
see on the front cover?' The most popular
response was that they wanted to see the
character which they re playing in a hit movie
(for example Emily from my film), that had 7
responses and there wasn't many people who
would prefer to see the actor themselves in
smart attire as there was only 2 responses for
that option.
Overview of the Film Magazine
Questionnaire
Overall this questionnaire has helped me come to
important decisions which my magazine will have. I have
no got ideas on what my target audience like and dislike, I
have took in their opinions and will consider them whilst
making decisions for my film magazine, for example with
the masthead, over the next two days I will make a
decision weather to use the masthead Motion or
Spotlight. Every single question has helped me gather
information which is key to creating a successful film
magazine. I am now going to look at more professional
magazines and think of which codes and conventions I
can display in my own film magazine.
Overall view of audience feedback
Overall, the focus group allowed us to gather
feedback from our target audience to improve
upon the products within the film promotional
package in order to create a more professional
and successful product. The feedback which
I received was very helpful and will help
contribute towards the improvements of my
products as a whole.

To get audience feedback, we undertook a focus group, for this we had 9 people watching our trailer and getting feedback off of them, to get feedback we used a questionnaire which consisted of open and closed questions and also held and open discussion throughout stages of it. This type of audience feedback was very useful after finishing our film promotional package because all people in our focus group were in our target audience. This helped as they could identify mistakes or any possible improvements which would be make the product more effective once complete. This feedback gave us as a group an idea of weather our film promotional package was successful and weather the audience understood the film trailer.
  • 4. We were informed from the trailer that the audience mainly thought that the protagonist was the father in this film trailer, this was exactly what we was hoping for as we tried to make the father seem guilty through the use of a red herring. Nobody presumed that the protagonist was Emily, but Emily was the protagonist in our trailer, so this was a success, one of the people from the focus group quoted on their questionnaire that 'Emily was innocent compared to the sinister nature of the villain'. During the open discussion, everyone said that they would go and watch the full film just from watching the trailer, this shows the success of our trailer as everyone in our target audience claimed that they would go and watch the film if a full version was released in the cinema.
  • 5. Film Trailer Questionnaire To get more feedback about the trailer, we decided to create a questionnaire with questions all based on the film trailer. We asked them to fill out the questionnaire directly after watching the film trailer. As we had already established that their age fits into the target audience, we didn't ask for their age, as we wanted a mixed opinion of all ages in our target audience. On the questionnaire which we had given out, we asked the focus group if they would make any changes to our trailer and if so, to add comments of different shots which they believed would fit in with the trailer and improve it, we were informed by a 2 people that they believed there wasn't much of a sense of location, therefore we added an establishing shot of the outside of the house at the start of the trailer, we believed this would create more of a sense of location.
  • 6. Film Trailer Questionnaire For the first question, we asked "Which gender do you think this film is aimed at?" The majority of people believed that the film was targeted at mixed genders, this was evident by the 7/9 people who said this, 1 person said that it was predominantly targeted to a male audience and 1 person said that it was predominantly aimed to a female audience. This shows that our film trailer was a success for this as the majority of the target audience said that it was aimed at mixed genders, this shows that they understood the film trailer. I think the use of both of the main characters being different genders, potentially gives the film a wider range of a target audience as both genders can be appealed to the film. For the second question, we asked "What do you think the target audience for this film trailer is". 100% of people we asked responded saying that they thought the target audience was between 15-25, they were all correct and established that they were the target audience, this also shows that they believe it attracts to them, and that maybe they could relate to other people in the target audience which would enjoy this film, this is a positive thing as they have shown that they believe most people in their age category would understand and go and watch the full film.

Film Trailer Questionnaire For the third question we asked "What genre do you believe this film trailer is?" 5/9 people said that they thought the genre was horror due to the element of "panic and danger" which was associated with a lot of the shots. A reaction was that "the short clips, shrill noises and constant theme of fear" makes it sound like a horror film. On the other hand 4/9 people associated the trailer as a psychological thriller. One of these 4 said "The trailer suggests mind games and a situation where one hides is psychological". The genre which we were hoping to come across was that it was a psychological thriller, but this could be a positive thing because now we could be targeting a wider range of an audience if it is associated as a horror film or psychological thriller film, therefore more people may want to go watch the full version of the film. These results do show that we stuck to the codes and conventions of a psychological thriller, but maybe the audience were feeling fear rather than thinking about the mystery behind who the killer was.
  • 8. Film Trailer Questionnaire For the fourth question, we asked "What were the 3 most memorable shots from the trailer?" From this, there were several shots which stood out to the focus group, the shot of Emily hiding as 4/9 people found it to be the most memorable shot, we felt this was an important as we wanted the element of the game "hide and seek" to attract the audience as it plays a great amount of significance in the plot to the film. Another the shadow figure which was moving towards the camera, as 3/9 people associated this shot as the most memorable due to "the element of mystery to who/what the shadow is". The shot of Emily being trapped in the house and banging on the door as 3/9 people associated this as the most memorable shot, this is a positive thing from our prospective as our aim was to hide the protagonist and to make her seem innocent by using a red herring. Evidence of her being hid as the protagonist is suggested as one of the responses for the hiding shot was that "the secrecy added to the panic and fear", and another response from the shot of Emily being trapped was "that there was no escape for her" and there was "fear and desperation being associated with Emily being trapped".
  • 9. Film Trailer Questionnaire During the process of creating our trailer, our aim was to hide the villain, and to make the villain seem innocent as a victim rather than a killer. To find out if we successfully had hidden the protagonist, we asked "Who do you think the protagonist/villain was and why?" The most popular answer for this question was that 4/9 people believed that the protagonist was the father and the most important response was that nobody identified Emily as being the protagonist. This is a positive thing as we tried to make Emily seem too innocent to hurt anyone, we wanted Emily to look the victim to her father by the use of a red herring. This obviously worked as one response was that "Emily seems innocent compared to the sinister nature of the father". This proves that the goals which we set to represent our characters were successful. Creating the soundtrack was a very hard process, as sounds/ music for a psychological thriller were hard to find and not many of them would work with our trailer. For the sixth question, we asked "Do you think the soundtrack compliments the trailer?" 100% of people in the focus group said that the soundtrack complimented the trailer and creates a sense of "fear", "panic" and "suspense". One person stated that "there was a sense of danger and panic which is fitting with the images within". We were also informed by one person in an additional comment that although the soundtrack complimented the trailer, they believed that there wasn't a lot of consistency of the "booms" throughout the trailer. We understood their comment and created a second version of our film trailer and added sound to the background where we thought it would be appropriate, this worked so therefore we placed it on the background of the finished product of the trailer.
  • 10. Film Trailer Questionnaire As we disguised the villain to the plot with a red herring, we wanted to know what spin the audience believed the plot would take, so we decided to ask the focus group on the questionnaire "What would you predict the story of the film to be based on evidence given in the trailer?". From this 4/9 people identified that the plot to this trailer is surrounding a game of hide and seek between the brother and sister, this is important as we wanted the game to appear as important to the plot, the majority of the focus group realized this. Nobody in the focus group identified the protagonist as Emily due to the red herring, but 2/9 believed that the protagonist was the father and that he had something to do with the murders. This is exactly what we were hoping the focus group would respond with, as we wanted the plot to seem a mystery to the audience.
  • 11. Overview of the Film Trailer Questionnaire As an overview question we decided to ask "Would you go and watch it in the cinema?". 8/9 people said that they would go and watch this film in the cinema, this is positive as the age range of this focus group was 16-25 which matches our target audience. Therefore on average, we can come to the estimation that 89% of people in our target audience would go and watch this in the cinema, therefore I have come to the conclusion that the presentation of our product was a success.
  • 12. Film Poster During the focus group, we carried out an open discussion for feedback on the success of our film posters. From the focus group I got feedback from the colour scheme, 100% of the focus group believed that the colour scheme was effective on my film poster and that the colour scheme does work and it was said to have looked professional. The aim which I had for my film poster was to create mystery behind who the killer was going to be, I did this by having the image of a females eye, I attempted to make the female look innocent and be represented as a "victim" rather than a villain. They believed that the most memorable feature on my poster is the main image as she is being represented as the "victim" in my poster, and she is "hiding and something has happened to her so she looks scared", and "as if something is coming to get her due to the image of the hand". But another person described the image to be presenting Emily as the protagonist due to the expression of the eye showing that "she cant believe what she has done and looks as if she may have killed someone". Therefore it created a code of enigma, which is exactly what I wanted as the killer is being disguised, but due to the expression, there is also a chance that it could be her, this successfully made connections to the film. Overall 100% of the focus group said that they would also go and find the trailer online if they had just seen this poster being advertised, therefore I would deem the product of my film poster to be a success as it advertised the film trailer well.
  • 13. Film Magazine Questionnaire Before creating my film magazine, I wanted to know what my target audience would want on the cover of my film magazine. To do this I handed out a questionnaire to everyone in the focus group to fill out. I created a questionnaire based on the ideas for a film magazine and have handed it out to nine members of my focus group to ask what they would like and would they think would make a good film magazine. I am going to consider their responses whilst creating my magazine front cover as I will have an idea of what my target audience want to see/read.

Film Magazine Questionnaire The first question I asked on my questionnaire was “What age group are you in ….” I had six responses saying that they were aged between 18-21, two responses saying they were aged between 16-17, no responses from anyone aged 11-15 or 27+ and one aged 22-26, this suggested to me that I would be aiming my magazine at young adults between the age range of 16-26, just like my film trailer. The second question which I asked on my questionnaire was “Which gender are you?”, I asked this question to make sure I realised what the males wanted on a magazine and what the females want on a magazine, but from the results of the questionnaire, it seems they have very similar opinions. I had six responses from males and three responses saying that they were female.
  • 15. Film Magazine Questionnaire The third question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which of the following articles would you be more interested in reading? (tick two)' I had 5 responses saying that they would be interested in Reading film reviews, I had three responses for actor interviews and tickets to an opening premiere. I had two responses for the latest films released and behind the scenes shots/interviews and one response for a look at the latest award winning films. The fourth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which title for the magazine (masthead) do you prefer?' I had mixed responses from this question, mainly from only two options, Motion had four responses and Spotlight had three responses, some of the people attending the focus group also recommended some of their own for me, for example Action and Spotlight. I will not consider which masthead I will use for my film magazine. Screen, Audition and broadcast had no responses.
  • 16. Film Magazine Questionnaire The fifth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which slogan do you prefer?' I had a lot of responses for Lights, Camera.. Action at six responses, getting behind the scenes had two responses and the film guidebook had one response. Get all the latest film info had no responses. The sixth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Which colours should the magazine be? (choose three)' White and black were very popular responses having nine votes each, so everyone voted white and black as 2/3 main colours to be used. Red had six responses and blue had two responses, one of the participants in this questionnaire also came up with an answer for me, they came up with the colour yellow to be used, I will consider their responses once creating my film magazine.
  • 17. Film Magazine Questionnaire The seventh question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'Would you buy a film magazine?' I had 7 responses saying yes that they would buy a film magazine, and for those who said that they wouldn't buy the film magazine, I asked them why on the question, both responses stated that they wouldn't buy the magazine as it is only based on one subject and they prefer to read something which gives information about a variety of subjects. The eighth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'How much would you pay for a film magazine?' I had mixed responses from this question which I asked, a majority of options were chosen. two people said they would pay between £1.00-£1.50 for a film magazine, three people said that they would pay between £1.50-£2.00 and £2.00-£2.50 for a film magazine, one person said they would pay between £2.50-£3.00 and nobody said they would pay more than £4.00
  • 18. Film Magazine Questionnaire The ninth question which I asked on my questionnaire was 'What would you prefer to see on the front cover?' The most popular response was that they wanted to see the character which they re playing in a hit movie (for example Emily from my film), that had 7 responses and there wasn't many people who would prefer to see the actor themselves in smart attire as there was only 2 responses for that option.
  • 19. Overview of the Film Magazine Questionnaire Overall this questionnaire has helped me come to important decisions which my magazine will have. I have no got ideas on what my target audience like and dislike, I have took in their opinions and will consider them whilst making decisions for my film magazine, for example with the masthead, over the next two days I will make a decision weather to use the masthead Motion or Spotlight. Every single question has helped me gather information which is key to creating a successful film magazine. I am now going to look at more professional magazines and think of which codes and conventions I can display in my own film magazine.
  • 20. Overall view of audience feedback Overall, the focus group allowed us to gather feedback from our target audience to improve upon the products within the film promotional package in order to create a more professional and successful product. The feedback which I received was very helpful and will help contribute towards the improvements of my products as a whole.
