The importance of reading.
    How can you help?
“Too many children in England
do not read well enough by the
time they leave primary school.”
Ofsted 2011
“The diligent, concentrated and
 systematic teaching of phonics is
central to success of all schools
     that achieve high reading
             standards”
Ofsted 2011
From June 2012 all 6 year olds
(Year 1) will be screened to
    provide information about
standards in reading for individual
 children, schools and nationally.
How do we teach reading at
          Green Park?
•By ensuring high quality phonics teaching
•By delivering high quality Guided Reading
•By providing the opportunity for Daily
reading activities
•By ensuring there is high quality planning by
teachers
So.... what typically happens in a Guided
             Reading session?
•Children have the opportunity to discuss a new book or
recap a book they are reading
•Children are taught how to tackle unknown words
•Children are provided the chance to read independently
or out loud within the group
•Children are given the opportunity to answer searching
questions and find evidence of their answers in the book
•Children are set tasks to do at home or in school relating
to the book

Let’s put our
reading skills to
the test.
As the afternoon light started to fade, the
cow stopped eating grass, stood instead with
its head over the gate and gazed expectantly
down the lane.

How light was it?
As the afternoon light started to fade, the
cow stopped eating grass, stood instead
with its head over the gate and gazed
expectantly down the lane.

The afternoon light was starting to fade.

A LITERAL question. We can find the answer in the text.
As the afternoon light started to fade,
the cow stopped eating grass, stood
instead with its head over the gate and
gazed expectantly down the lane.

What time of year did this happen?
As the afternoon light started to fade,
the cow stopped eating grass, stood
instead with its head over the gate and
gazed expectantly down the lane.

Winter or late autumn

This is a DEDUCTIVE question. The text does
not actually tell you the answer.
As the afternoon light started to fade,
the cow stopped eating grass, stood
instead with its head over the gate and
gazed expectantly down the lane.

How do you think the cow might have been
feeling?
As the afternoon light started to fade, the
cow stopped eating grass, stood instead
with its head over the gate and gazed
expectantly down the lane.
The cow stopped eating grass – this suggests it might not be hungry

It stood still with its head over the gate – this suggests it is patient

It is gazing expectantly down the lane – so it seems to be waiting for something.

This is an INFERENTIAL question. The text does
not tell you the answer but we can work it out.
How can we help
children acquire all
    these skills?
When teaching and assessing children’s
reading we are mindful of the 7 assessment
keys.
Assessment Focus 1: word reading skills and strategies

Assessment Focus 2: Understand, describe, select or retrieve information

Assessment focus 3: Deduce infer and interpret information

Assessment focus 4: Identify and comment on the structure and organisation

Assessment Focus 5: Explain and comment on the writer’s use of language

Assessment Focus 6: Evaluate the writers’ purposes and viewpoints

Assessment Focus 7: Relate texts to their social, cultural and historical traditions
