  1. Good morning! Gretchen Schroeder, I’m currently getting my master’s in PR here at Syracuse. I graduated from Cornell last May and jumped into this program about 6 weeks later and will be finishing up at the end of May. I’ve gotten really invovled in SM this year and am a student member of Syracuse university’s social media team. I am mainly responsble for Twitter - so if you follow SyracuseU on Twitter, you are following me at times. I have prepared some slides and notes, but I really want this presentation to be valuable to you so feel free to stop me at any time with questions.
  2. I’d like to open up the presentation with this video for those of you out there who may be wondering why SM is such a big deal.
  3. So hopefully that video gave you a good idea of why it’s important to take part in social media - it is a fundamental shift in the way we communicate. SM is opening up more channels of communication and holds companies more accountable. When we look at this group of logos and see all these social media tools and can understand why we might feel overwhelmed and be unsure of where to start. Fortunatley, today we are going to focus on three of them:
  4. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube can be considered the big 3. Just so I have an idea, how many of you have a Facebook account? Twitter? Watched a video on YT? How many of you have uploaded a video to YouTube? Ok, so let’s take a look at these more closely…
  5. May have seen “The Social Network” Was reading something last night that said in 20 minutes, 1 million links are shared on FB. That’s huge.
  6. If you are going to start a FB page for your business or organization, there are a few simple tips to keep in mind. One thing that we’ll see throughout this presentation, is that the same principles for good customer service and marketing apply online as they do in person - if you are at a networking event you are not just going to be standing in 1 corner, talking about yourself, and ignoring what everyone else has to say. If you are, then you’re missing the purpose. Scott Stratten, author of unmarketing, skyped in to my social media class this semester and had a really good point. He said social media only amplifies your product and message. If it’s a poor product or you have bad custoemr service, social media can’t fix that!
  7. During South by Southwest, Tweets increased from 20,000 per day to 60,000 per day. As I mentioned earlier, there is an average of 140 million tweets sent each day. Tweets = 140 characters
  8. Since Twitter is a little more foreign to some people, I’d like to go over some of the basics. Ask people what they know about or want to know more about!
