Standards – either in the XML sense or simply communication best practices – help grow, accelerate and “professionalize” an industry. Where would construction be without material standards for width and strengths, or certification for specific skills? How could we have transportation without standards for traffic and processes? Standards are what help ad-hoc processes become enterprise-class, and allow them to scale beyond our expectations. Technical communication is in an era of rapid, disruptive and revolutionary change. The true nature of the challenge is understood by a few, and pros and cons of potential solutions by even fewer. The future therefore will require that we work together to exchange knowledge as best we can to help each other hit the many moving targets. We must do this because our old techniques and processes just can’t keep up, and no organization has the time or funds to reinvent every solution on their own. In “The Freedom to Grow,” Noz Urbina will explain how standards can help an organization with little funds tackle larger challenges, and larger organizations implement profound change with reduced risk. The alternative is potentially getting left behind as the industry and community rush forward. Noz Urbina is an established content strategy thought leader, consultant and trainer specializing in cutting edge, multi-channel, business-driven content projects for marketing, business, technical and omnichannel communications. He is co-author of “Content Strategy: Connecting the dots between business brand and benefits”. Since 2000, he has provided customer experience focused services to Fortune 500 organizations and small-to-medium enterprises. The presentation titled "Open Research Data Frameworks: Lessons for the Global South" was delivered in the National Symposium on Improving eGovernance using Big Data Analytics, held at Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, on 28th February 2017. The symposium was a run up event of ICEGOV2017 (10th International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance), held at New Delhi. I briefly discussed the global initiatives such as UNESCO's Global Open Access Portal (GOAP), Re3Data.org (Registry of Research Data Repositories), GODAN (Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition), Research Data Alliance (RDA), ICSSR Data Service, and self-archiving of scientific data on data repositories.

Crowdsourcing projects have generated millions of data points through volunteer contributions of classifications, tags and other information about cultural heritage and scientific collections. The lines between art, design, and information are dissolving as we experience new places and objects. Consider, for example, the organic flow of air traffic over North America at daybreak, the bursts of search query memes spreading around the globe, and the pointillist surge of mobile phone usage on New Year's Eve. Using the new techniques of generative data visualization, a new generation of artist/designers/engineer/scientists are creating gorgeous, dynamic experiences driven by massive sets of data about our own lives. Their work comes to life in architectural spaces, on walls of wood and metal and light and shimmering glass clouds suspended overhead. Of course it must be touched to be appreciated and engaged with, simple gestures launch a thousand images and possibilities. Many of these projects have received international recognition. They are primarily 3D applications that can run in real time, but really can only be appreciated by watching them, as movies. These data movies aim to make information easier to understand while being enjoyable to watch. Surprising insights surface through looking at our 'data life' in new ways, and may compel us to design in different, even better ways.

“Improving” prediction of human behavior using behavior modification

“Improving” prediction of human behavior using behavior modification

Keynote at WOMBAT 2019 (Monash University) https://www.monash.edu/business/wombat2019 Abstract: Studying causal effects and structures is central to research in management, social science, economics, and other areas, yet typical analysis methods are designed for low-dimensional data. Classification & Regression Trees ("trees") and their variants are popular predictive tools used in many machine learning applications and predictive research, as they are powerful in high-dimensional predictive scenarios. Yet trees are not commonly used in causal-explanatory research. In this talk I will describe adaptations of trees that we developed for tackling two causal-explanatory issues: self selection and confounder detection. For self selection, we developed a novel tree-based approach adjusting for observable self-selection bias in intervention studies, thereby creating a useful tool for analysis of observational impact studies as well as post-analysis of experimental data which scales for big data. For tackling confounders, we repurose trees for automated detection of potential Simpson's paradoxes in data with few or many potential confounding variables, and even with very large samples. I'll also show insights revealed when applying these trees to applications in eGov, labor economics, and healthcare.
