6. 1. INTRODUCTION:
1.1 Brief of JRD’s Life:
• Person driven by his spirit of flying
• Born : 29th July, 1904 in Paris, France
• Parents: Father – Mr. Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata
• Mother – Suzanne Briere (French citizen)
• Spouse:-Thelma Vicaji
• Popularly known as “Jeh” among his friends
• Education in France, India and England
• Joined French army after completing his
education
7. EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION
CHILDHOOD:-spent much of his childhood in
France and as a result, French was his first
language. Tata also attended the French Foreign
Legion.
SCHOOL:- attended the Cathedral and John
Connon School, Bombay (now Mumbai).
8. • JRD Tata then joined the French army for a mandatory
one year period.
He strongly desired to extend his services in the French
army so that he could join a horse riding school but he
could not. This proved to be a life saving boon to him
since just after he left, the regiment in which he served
was destroyed.

9. • Joined Tata as an unpaid apprentice in December 1925
• His mentor in business was a Scottish, John Peterson
• At the age of 25, JRD surrendered his French citizenship to
embrace India as his workplace
INTREST
• Since childhood JRD Tata had immense interest in flying. He
looked upon a great aviation pioneer Louis Bleriot and was highly
inspired by him in his early years.
10. In 1929, JRD became the first Indian to pass the
Pilot examination
He established “Tata Airlines”, which later on
became “Air India”
Father of civil aviation in India
Later become president of IATA
At the age of 34, JRD was made the Chairman of
Tata Sons
J.R.D. married to Thelma in 1930, had no
children
12. J.R.D. passed away in Geneva, Switzerland on 29th
November, 1993 at the age of 89.
On his death, the Parliament was adjourned in his
memory.
J.R.D. epitomised a way of life and a culture of
business that cared for the country and its people.

1. Entrepreneurship:
He started with 14 enterprises and half a century when
he left, Tata & Sons was a corporation of 95
enterprises.
Diversified the business to chemicals, tea, automobiles
and IT.
Under his chairmanship, the assets of the Tata Group
grew from US$100 million to over US$5 billion.
Tata Motors, TCS, Titan, Voltas, Tata Tea, Tata
Communications are some of the giants started under
his leadership.

Passion for flying
Formed the Tata Aviation Service in 1932
Launched “Air India International” as India's first
international airline
Director on the Board of Indian Airlines for 25-years
Bestowed with the title of Honorary Air Commodore of
India

Trustee of Sir Dorabji Tata Trust from its inception
Founded the TISS(Tata Institute of Social Sciences) in
1936,(TIFR) Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in
1945 and the National Centre for Performing Arts
Eestablished Asia's first cancer hospital, the Tata
Memorial Centre for Cancer, Research and
Treatment, Bombay, 1941.
